Latest Berbatov Interview ...It Doesn't Look Good

Bored hanging around? You must be Tottenham...

- According to an article in Daily Telegraph, if you were an Englishman, you would be the second most important figure in England after Her Majesty the Queen and you would have played eighty matches for the national team. Have you ever regretted being a Bulgarian?
- Oh, I am proud of my nationality although sometimes, when I am having a drink with my friends, we speculate on how much more famous I would be, if I were an Englishman or an Italian, for instance. It's not easy to be a Bulgarian, but it's an interesting experience. Although I earn my bread abroad, I feel best at home, in Bulgaria.
- How do you feel when you read interviews with women who say they have slept with you?
- I get p*ssed off for about five minutes, but then I calm down. I am above these things. Such interviews cannot make me lose my temper, because my close friends know what's the real situation about me.
- Who's the woman by your side?
- My career is the most important thing for me at the moment, but I know who of the people around me love me and I know whom I love. I also know who the mother of my children will be. I'll raise a family when the time for it comes, because everything has its good time.
- Statistics shows that Tottenham Hotspur win trophies only in years that end in "1". Does it mean that you'll have to wait until 2011?
- Bullsh*t! I don't have so much time. By then, I'll probably have given up football! I have read this statistics, but this year we won the League Cup and thus we refuted it, right? This was a great match at the Wembley Stadium and I'll never forget it. Not only did we defeat Chelsea, but I also scored a goal. I hope there will be more moments like that in my career. At the end of the season, I'll have talks with the management of Tottenham about my possible transfer.
-Do you have an idea of how much your fortune is?
- I have no idea, honestly.
- What do you invest in?
- Now I am investing in my future - I play football so that one day, when I give up football, I'd be able to work for pleasure not for money and my family will be wealthy enough.

Interesting enough from the 'Statistics' question. Given that this went out on Saturday in Bulgaria, it is a current enough announcement to me that our boy is playing it so cool Steinway & Sons are getting Iceland to deliver the Concert Grand he ordered.

Why won't the ****** simply say he's off for the right money? Because, babe, the money has yet to be right.

Why won't he simply say he's staying? Because, babe, he's ready to walk. And to think they called Chimbonda mercenary...

With all acknowledgements, due thanks and gratitudes etc to our good friends at Bulgaria's MAX Magazine.

When I look back at Berbatov from last season, he seemed to celebrate each goal as if they meant the world to him; whether he scored them or not. This season, the only game I've really seen him like that was the final. His heart isn't at Tottenham anymore, and we have to live with that.

Anonymous said...

he needs to be told he can move if the money is right and abroad or nowhere,we won for the first time in donks withought him on sat with keane in the hole behind bent, it really aint the end of the world and i get the impression the players are as sick of him as i am so will prob galvanize them, it is a team game after all!

the time is right for him to move on. As a previous poster said, his heart is not really in it anymore, and his body language on the pitch must piss the rest of the team off particulary when he throws his arms up in the air for the millionth time.

From his point of view, he needs to be in a top side where he is not the undisputed best player which will give him the focus needed to fight for his place, rather than act as a prima donna.

It may be a long shot, but what price on Spurs breaking into the top 4 next year and winning one of the cups, while Berbs spends most of his time on the bench at one of the "big" clubs.

are the people that reckoned it was just his agent etc now going to acknowledge that he was doing what berba wanted him to all along?it annoys me that he was nothing before he came to us and had never won shit as far as i know the fucking big time charlie! i'd honestly be more concerned if it was keano(now theres a true yid)

That is the biggers load of BS I have seen.
Where's the link?
I find it very hard to believe The Telegraph would ever post an interview with "Bulsh*t" as a quote and Berba doesn't talk it that way, he's far more educated.
While I doubt he'll be with us next season I'm 99.9% certain that that is a fake!!

We can't blame him for wanting to leave, he is a player who deserves to grace the biggest stage and I don't think we can accommodate that. Had we been challenging for top four this season with the Carling Cup win, he may have been tempted to stay. However after a disappointing season we have moved backwards which can't be encouraging. No matter what potential we have under Ramos, it hasn't progressed us in the league, and our performances and results of late have been poor. I am honoured to have seen some marvellous performances from a player who must go down as one of our greats, and if he is to leave I certainly won't begrudge him for it. Spurs may well be more effective without him, after all it may give us an opportunity to try different systems. With both Keane and Berbatov in such outstanding form we are consigned only to play a 442 which does our weak midfield little benefit. It's just a grave disappointment that we may be seeing the last of such a fantastic player in a spurs shirt...

I really couldn't care less anymore. Post match interviews are focued on the future of Berbatov rather than what the team has done in the game, he's too much of a distraction for the media and their love of the Bulgarian detracts from the rest of the team. One man does not a team make and my loyalty is to Tottenham Hotspur. We've got a proven goalscorer in Bent, and Robbie Keane can do the link-up job behind we'll be ok for next season, that is assuming someone comes in for him, I would have half expected him to at least put in a few top performances toward the end of the season, 'shop window' time and all that, but it seems his desire to really play is very 'as and when'!

It's a load of crap, this "petulant and negative" business. It's a prefabricated media image that the tabloids have cooked up out of a couple of arm-waving and facial-expression habits Berbatov has on the pitch. It's the "sign" that they've hung around his neck for easy, consumable identification purposes.

This is what they do in the celebrity-driven so-called "news" media. It is their main modus operandi. They devise simplified, cartoon images of public figures, based on one or two incidents, and then they select future images and coverage of the person to bolster the predetermined image and to filter out anything that contradicts it.

To pick a couple of off-the-top-of-my-head examples, it's what they did (with her enthusiastic co-operation) to Paris Hilton (not that I'm at all interested in Hilton), it's what they did (despite his opposition) to William Hague (not that I was ever a Hague fan) and it's what they do to footballers.

Berbatov does not demonstrate "negative and petulant behaviour", on or especially off the pitch, any more than any other player. It's a falsehood, a lie, it's rubbish. His reputation wouldn't be borne out, if you were to watch (say) 90 random minutes of football with a camera focused solely on Berba. One wouldn't see anything unusually "negative or petulant", unless one had been primed by months of biased media coverage to look for it.

He looks frustrated when he can't get a pass he can see and no one else can and he expresses his frustration - but no more so than Robbie Keane. He gets especially annoyed when he can't execute the pass he can see and no one else can.

He gives a shit about the quality of his play and he gives a shit about the quality of his teammates' play. If that's "negativity and petulance", then I wish others on the pitch would emulate him.

And please don't reply by telling me he's "lazy". That's also rubbish. He makes things look easy and plays football in a relaxed, languid style. I wish our other players had enough ability to play in that manner and still deliver the goods....

Not sure how credible Bulgaria's Max magazine is but the point remains the same. i think we all know Berba wants to leave. Why is everyone getting so annoyed about it?

He didn't grow up a Spurs fan so lets not turn him into Sol Campbell! We bought him for 10.9 are will prob sell him for 25 - 35m. Great business - lets not turn him into Sol Campbell! Rumour has it the Spurs board only want to sell him out of the Premiership so that he doesn't go to one of our rivals - Sol Campbell take a bow.

Good luck Berba. I hope you stay but if you leave thanks and lets use the money across the team. Afterall we are a TEAM.

I am half Bulgarian , but i will be very happy if Tottenham sell him , cause he really act as prima donna. Now i know for sure he is not going to be a Tottenham legend , he is eager to play for "THE BIG CLUBS" ( hahahahaha), no matter what if will cost to him.If he use Tottenham as one step in his career we(the true Tottenham fans) shouldn't consider him as a big player , as se think we are not good enough club for him.Anyway i am sick of him. Moreover - we MUST sell him in order to have a top 4 club competing for trophies. He is a good footballer , tall handsome man but with no heart.

big belly : you talk absolute and utter shit mate, i go to games and see it with my own fucking eyes !imo it was the media that convinced him he was too big for spurs and ever since he has fucking acted as such! you didn't see any of it in his first season when he was very humble indeed, if this was just him he would of done it from day one! All this deserves the biggest stage is bollocks too its not like i even knew who he was before he came here and i bet 99% didn't either ,we gave him the chance,he done well for about a season and a bit and now wants to do one (real spurs legend....not!)you need to get a fucking grip and i can only assume that you are not old enough to of seen some real spurs legends which had the talent but also the love of spurs(will reel off some names if ya want)footballers come and go ,look at the mob down the road Henry aint exactly set the world alight since his big move has he? it aint a given that berba would either, he wasn't even the biggest player in germany(shit league) and several of his previous managers/coaches have questioned his attitude and application so not just our press mate maybe you need to open your fucking eyeballs

Absolutely agree with anon 18:38.
His attitude is designed to make himself and his teammates raise their standards to the benefit of the club and the fans.Since when did everybody become body language experts?Stop looking for signs that he might be leaving, enjoy him while hes here and wait and see.The club existed before Berbatov and will still be here when hes gone.

Best player we've had for years, inspirational to fans and teammates.I hope he doesn't go.(Doesn't the alleged offer of 80,000 a week go over our present wage cap?)Use your own judgment don't believe what the papers say, they are interested in a story, and its easy to back up the angle you invented for yourself."Lazy and petulant" are both media labels which dont ring true to me.When you are as good as Berbatov you demand high standards from yourself and others and this can only serve to raise the standard of the team.Robbie Keane obviously enjoys playing with him and their mutual benefit is shown by the fact that we have two players in the highest scoring tables.Don't read all the paper talk its not really meant to be read its designed to fill space. If he stays great;if he goes use the 30million or whatever to carry on building the team.Personally I will miss him,hes a joy to watch...

very well said BigBelly, that was a proper response! i completely agree with everything you said.

as for berba not fitting in spursbhoy, how do you know exactly what ramos wants from a forward? If your saying Berba is not fast enough, he is certainly faster than Robbie Keane so by your reckoning we'll have a completely new look strike force next season! And even if Berba wasn't quite bullet enough for Ramos, saying he doesn't fit into Ramos game pan is ridiculous, players of that class can play in any system. Ramos has hardly had to adapt to having world class striker, on the contrary, our entire game has been built around Berbatov under Ramos. Next will you say that Bolton would not want Messi because he takes the ball on the ground and runs at people whereas Bolton like to play it high for a big forward to knock down?

Berba will more than likely leave us, but if he doesn't, noone will be happier than me. He is a wonderful player who is the first player since Ginola to bring me this much joy! Anyone who says his season has been worse than last, is that why he has more league goals (the same goals in all comps) and more assists, putting him as the 5th top striker in the league and 3rd highest assister? Yes, I wish all our players seasons were as bad as his, we'd have won the league!......

BTY"
well I'm at every game as well and I've seen him give no less than Keane, Dawson or any of the other players who everyone praises their work rate! If he only played well for a season and a half how come he has both our most goals and our most passes, both of which put him amongst the top players in the league in that category? And if you didn't know about him before we signed him, you have a very introverted view on world football where football beyond these shores is only played by "jonny foreigners".

Without him this season would have been ten times worse, a trophy less relegation battle, and you need to get your head out of the sun and realise that. Yes, I wish that he played with the same smile as Ginola did, but I don't doubt that he plays with the same passion. And yes, I wish he had the love for the club that Ginola and Hoddle did, but in this day and age very few players do have that kind of love for their club. I do, however, think that his contribution to the team has been anyway compromised and I wholeheartedly believe that he has been one of very few players who have not let us down this season.

But I bet this weekend if he plays you'll be shouting "england number 1" at Robbo because, even if he has been rubbish for the best part of two years, his heart was in the right place!...

Anon 18:55 (first one) - I'm certainly not old enough to have seen the likes of Blanchflower or Gilzean. However I grew up in the class of Hoddle, Ardiles, Waddle, Roberts, Gough and Mabbutt. I've seen Gascoigne, Lineker, Klinnsman, and Ginola (a great player, but detrimental to the team). I can recall a certain Sol Campbell as one of our greatest defenders in living memory, defection aside, to be followed by the equally immense Ledley King. So I feel I'm perfectly well placed to decide for myself who I'd consider to be a legend. Berbatov most certainly is, we have had the benefit of seeing a truly world class talent grace the White Hart Lane stage for two years and I appreciate every moment of it....

You know I'm with you 100%.

This is the guy who went missing at the start of the season. He was recognised in Leverkusen as a talented but inconsistent player who was a part in the treble seeking team in 2002 which relinquished their grip on the league, lost the German Cup final and the Champions League final.

I don't deny he may have matured as a player since then. But we don't need him. We finished 5th without him before. We may do as much or improve without him. Good luck to him if he wants to go. But please Big Belly, with your multiple pseudonym disorder... don't pretend for one second that Dimitar Berbatov tries, puts in the same amount of effort that Keane does. He doesn't, and he feels as if he doesn't have to. And IMO we can do without players like that. Bent linked up well with Keane on Saturday, and we will get a replacement (positionally at least) for Berba if he goes.

So bye bye Berba. Let it go, and let him go. Talented, yes. Irreplaceable? No.

Berbatov has been a great player for us. However, it is now more than obvious that he is desperate to move - so let him go.

How many people had heard of him before he joined us? Next to nobody - thats how many. So there will be someone else out there to take the reigns from him. They may be a different style of player but as long as the goals to games ratio is the same does it matter????

I say thankyou to Berba for playing as well as he has done for us. however if your heart is elsewhere - its time to go.

Anonymous said...

bty , It would appear that your aggressive stance displays an emotional challenge to overcome. I'm certainly not the poster you believe me to be. I just wish you could respond positively to reasonable posts. At least consider the points rather than go on random rants accusing any critic to be one and the same poster. You notice I'm not accusing you of being the mysterious stranger?

My point is quite simply that Berbatov is an extremely good player that we have had the benefit of experiencing within our ranks. His partnership and understanding with Keane has been a saving grace to our season.

I too wish that this speculation would cease, though would gladly have him stay for longer.

However if he does go, what is wrong with him going to a team in the Champions League? He should not be criticised for this, after all if we had qualified, he'd be certain to stay. He has been nothing short of superlative, and I feel sorry for any fans who cannot appreciate his grace and sublime skills on the field. How many strikers who play in the premiership can effortlessly control a long punt down field from the back, on their instep, rather than going for the random flick on?
I can't think of one....

We can't blame Berbatov for wanting to leave. There are loads of clubs out there after him and we have to accept that we are not regarded as a big club in England never mind Europe.

shanemac said...

If we sign Jean Makoun, David Villa, and diego capel to go along with modric, we'll have an incredibly petite team. Cause for alarm?

Keane / Villa = average height 5'9''
Modric / Makoun / jenas (or Zokora) / lennon / capel = average height 5'8''

I know Makoun, Capel, and Villa are far from being Spurs players right now, but bloody hell, it seems like all the outfield players we're allegedly interested in are tiny.

shanemac said...

I didn't mean to imply that we'll be playing with 5 midfielders next year. Cocked that up, apologies.

onedavemackay said...

Point 1.
Whoever of you don't think the Berb is one of our best players ever are really supporting the wrong team.

Point 2.
I have yet to read or hear a creditable report with him actually stating he wants to leave. That does not mean he's staying but we all know most of what's written is bollocks.

Point 3.

None of you "get rid of him quick" types have made any decent argument of how Berbs departure will improve the team and the money is irrelevant. If we can afford to punt 16.5 million on Bent we are not short of funds. Unless we can unearth another exceptional top class striker for 10 million we should want to hang on to him.

Anonymous said...

Mr Mackay,

As ever, you know your onions.

My take on Dimitar Berbatov, our most entertaining* player since Daveeed:

He's never actually stated he's off.

He's a total and utter perfectionist, this is why he'll never be happy unless every pass that comes to him is precise and everything he does - trapping, passing shooting is spot on. A lot of the world's most outstanding people are miserable fuckers. He doesn't just get pissed off with others, he gets miffed with himself when he gets it wrong.

Recent example (just for all the body language experts who support Spurs through their modem): his self disgust at fucking up his last minute chance against Bolton.

He has personal class as a man, as far as I could see: When he didn't want to celebrate his goal against Leverkusen.

We would miss him deeply if he goes but he's not Spurs on his own. It's a team game and we need team players (mostly**), like Keano, who I actually feel is more important to Spurs for what he obviously does morale-wise.

So if he goes, thanks for the memories. If he stays, even better, as some wise bloke said: you can't eat money.

*And let's not forget, football is meant to be entertainment, especially at our beloved Spurs - if you want 1-0s, go join the goons of yesteryear or today's chelsea.

**We're Spurs and we generally have a luxury player every few years to give us that special feeling when they get the ball and all goes quiet for a split second, we gasp, pulses rise and sometimes we see pure sporting art. Otherwise, what's the point.

Sorry to go on. I care.

onedavemackay said...

Frontwheel. Of course I agree and what you say about him being a perfectionist is how I've always seen him.

It is a team game.
No player is indispensable.
But some players are irreplaceable.

It was inevitable that as the season ended there were be huge speculation about Berbatov's future - not least because numerous Champions League clubs need someone like him. However as I understand it he still has 2 years to run on his contract with an option for 2 more. We had a similar situation with Carrick who I feel we let go of too easily.I think too many of the comments posted here assume it is an inevtablity that Berbatov will go. However,I think Ramos may well the Key factor who can persuade him to stay. He's already signalled his intent with the signing of Modric - lack of decent service from midfield has been a major cause of some of Berbatov's frustration. So I remain optimistic about keeping him and we should cerainly play hardball over letting him go - nothing undere £40milion at least !!

Anonymous said...

Bottom line is he should come out and say whether he wants to go or wants to stay. I am personally resigned to the fact he's off so lets get on with it and stop all this fucking arguing. If he wants to go then he will end of.......

BTY said...

believe it or not i would love him to stay and bang them in next year but just feel like he's going so sort of half moving on, i don't go along with the irreplaceable stuff as i think there is prob only 1or2 truly irreplaceable players in the world and berbs as good as he is aint one of them imvho, maybe if we offer him a big wedge and sign a few more modric quality signings he will stay but if not we must use the dosh to improve the rest of the team and were b alright. at the end of the day a striker needs to stick it in the net, obviously berba does much more than this but my point is get enough creativity in midfield etc and even someone of lesser standard to berbs will get us enough goals ,look what fredi did at seville nowhere near as good as berba but still shed loads of goals. Its ok saying "I havnt seen him say he wants to leave"etc but aint seen him say he wants to stay either and my main point is contrary to what seems to be the general opinion that we must keep him at all costs(of which i agree to a point,we should make a fair effort)we would be ok if he leaves as long as Ramos etc are wise with the money which i think they would be.

Anonymous said...

Largely because this subject has been done to death I shall just again agree with bty!

ODM:

Sorry mate, but "Point 1.
Whoever of you don't think the Berb is one of our best players ever are really supporting the wrong team."?

I have always said he is talented. One of our best players ever? Hmmm. I just love watching Berba's failed flicks to a team mate, intercepted by the opposing defender, followed by the shrug of his shoulders and a glare at Steed/Lennon/Keane/Jenas (delete as applicable) cos it was obviously not his own fault for the trick pass going astray!

Don't get me wrong, when he's great, it's great. When it's not, it clearly is not. I, along with a few others have stated the case for him to go many times before. I suggest you trawl through some previous threads in April on here so you can read some well put reasons as to why your Point 3 is incorrect. Just take some time to read posts from the likes of 9.37 Anon and even myself for good clear reasons why selling Berbatov is NOT the end of the world. As for your supporting the wrong team bollocks... no, I support the team, not one player in that team.

As for the posts from Mr Angry defending Berbatov to the hilt and throwing the "c word" around liberally...

You obviously missed the thread containing not only yet another Berbatov debate (really? surely not a debate on HH regarding the man who lets his agent talk for him and has a deluded number of you thinking that it is ONLY agent talk?!) but a debate suggesting the abolition of the use of the c-word on this blog, censored or otherwise. Coño!

I am also astonished that there are so many people defending a guy who himself won't pledge allegiance to the club or badge, and before you suggest that's our the fault of those being critical of him in recent months... get real. You have already forgotten Berba's sterling lack of effort at the start of the season. I'm not here to mollycoddle people who earn more in a week than the majority of us do in a year or two.

BTY said...

mysterious stranger i am also dubious bout the best player ever tag surely this is just a matter of opinion and would depend on what criteria it was judged on, if you are talking about someone that actually cares about spurs like a roberts, perryman or a mabbutt then berba would be no where to be seen,Skill then gazza or ginola wins for me taking a ball out of the sky berba, calmness pens etc berba but i really think these people highlight why berbs may be detrimental to the team as a whole for the way they think he is absolutely flawless and never has a bad game, you was dead right bout the flicks etc that don't come off, its always someone elses fault which is clearly not the case,if you played in a pub team with someone that acted like that you would soon want to knock him the fuck out and i'd bet steed, lennon etc have felt the same.He plays crap and its the rest of the team not reading his mind and being up to his far superior wavelength ,he does well and its in spite of the crap he has around him, surely anyone with a level head can see thats not the case,he is a good player but not the super god some people have him down as!

At the end of the day he signed a contract to play for a team that wasnt in the Champions league cos the ones that were werent interested. Now hes acting like Spurs are mugging him off and preventing him from playing Champions league football. The bloke has used us as a stepping stone. I hope where ever he goes he ends up rotting on the bench cos he maybe good, but he aint the best!!!!!

big belly: i find it strange that a 46 yr old man still hero worships players, i thought that was just kiddies,i also find it strange that someone of such an age (that would of seen some truly great spurs legends and teams) rates berba above the lot of those. but still takes all sorts i suppose and your opinion is your opinion.

Wow...a lot of bloggers on this one. Let's just get 25-30 mil for this guy and buy a quality striker and a quality defender and call it a day. Like most others, I'm sick of the dude's attitude. He has a bitch for an agent and he's constantly complaining on the pitch about every little pass that doesn't come his way. We get it Dimi, you're the best on the pitch but stop making your teammates feel like they are inferior when you should be making them better footballers. Good riddance in my opinion...talent can only take you so far.
Being in America we see this all the time...

....and Harry, take down the pic of Berbatov at the top of the page. Cheers.

Also please use a * as a replacement for any chose vowel in said players name. For example... I really don't like Berbat*v's attitude, he's a lazy git. Or.. That Berb*tov really annoys me when he sits on the floor playing with his hair.

That's bullshit, he's largely responsible for us playing some of the most attractive football in years. Let's just part ways on good terms.

Played some pretty attractive stuff last sat and he wasn't even there! suppose he coaches as well eh? what a guy!

His Spurs experiences will be but images in Berbatov's scrapbook. In retirement, he'll look at the cuttings he gathered and think, 'How quaint'.

I don't want to be a quaint memory in anyone's scrapbook, even though it's a fact of life. So, bye, Berba.

And hello, new owner? The reason I ask is: why the delay over announcing stadium developments? A few offers received to buy the club, perhaps? Things to ruminate? Nothing is ever quite what it seems. What and where now for the club? Bread and circuses?

Because there's 'quaint' and there's 'Quaint'. I can accept that Berbatov will regard my club as quaint. I'll simply regard him likewise. Tit-for-tat. But it worries me that, some years from now, in MY retirement, I may look back, reflecting on images of the club I loved and its times gone by - a club (and a sport) changed out of all recognition to me - and presage Berbatov's sentiment: 'How quaint.'

Harry could you replace it with one of ledders lifting the cup or something?

Bty. I never said The Berb was our best player ever, I said he was ONE of our best ever players. Also, I have never claimed he had the commitment to the club of a Perryman or a Roberts.

I am old enough and fortunate enough to have seen Dave Mackay and he did have it all. He was deadly in the tackle a great passer of the ball, read the game as well as anyone, great in the air and had an awesome shot from any distance. I agree with you, he's the first person you'd want in the trenches with you.

Of course we all have different opinions I just find it sad that a guy who has been such a good player for our club, and has not yet left, is already attracting such vitriol.

Klinsman was not here very long but we were glad he came weren't we ?

odm- i aint directed any vitriol towards him really mate just been saying that i personally don't think it would be the end of the world if he goes n some people don't agree thats fine with me.as to your earlier comment i was just pointing out that it would depend on what criteria you was looking for to determine our best ever players. so what are you saying? the best ever? top10?20? and what do you base it on? not saying i'm gonna instantly disagree or anything just interested as to your point of view . give me ya top 10 geez

onedavemackay said...

bty. Oh my Gawd. Criteria Shmiteria . It's all so subjective and personal !

Of the top of my head ( and I'm sure I'll have missed out some obvious ones ) In no particular order mine are :

Jennings
Mackay
Jones
Greaves
Gilzean
Gazza
Ginola
Hoddle
King
Berbatov

Weird post. I don't hero-worship anyone, let alone footballers, of all people. Well ... I'll make exceptions for Duke Ellington and Charles Mingus, but everyone has to have some heroes, I suppose. But that's it for me on the hero front.

And I don't think Berbatov is better than "some truly great Spurs legends" either - and I didn't say he was, so where are you getting that? Off the top of my head, considering the obvious candidates and thinking about Spurs players I've seen over the past 25 years, I'd rate Gascoigne and Hoddle above Berbatov, but not Ginola, Lineker or or Sheringham.

My original post had little to do with whether Berbatov is a brilliant, good, indifferent or bad player. It was primarily about the way the news media stereotype players and simplify and distort their personalities - and the gullibility of a lot of fans who swallow these pat descriptions, rather than using their eyes.

Anyone who actually watched Berbatov with a neutral eye would see how hard-working he is (he just makes it look easy, especially when he's winning the ball and then holding it up whilst under pressure from 2 defenders) and how most of his frustration is directed at himself.

You seem to be arguing with someone other than me. Nothing in either of your posts seems to relate to what I wrote. Perhaps you might want to read my post again, more carefully this time.

big belly :must of been someone else do i care..no
odm agree with most of them bloke fair do's but for me berbas name just doesn't sit right with a lot of those names, just my opinion ,good player an all but not quite there, maybe something will happen and he will sign up,the whole discussion will be pointless and he will go on to become an undisputed spurs great!
can i ask you do you really think it will be the end of the world withought him if he goes or will you just be disappointed coz you love watching him play?

BTY said...

sorry wrong button

onedavemackay said...

Bty. I obviously based my 10 purely on football ability alone. In terms of being the best servants of the club I would have to look to the likes of Perryman, Roberts and Mabbutt, not to mention Cyril Knowles !

onedavemackay said...

It won't be the end of the world, I still expect us to get better under Ramos.

As you say I just love to watch him.

Ha nice one cyril, nice one son....

odm- i can understand that mate fair enough,i do think that some people seem to not see a world withought him playing for us and i can't understand that.i also feel like he's used us as a bit of a step and that he thinks he's above us,maybe he is maybe he aint but considering ive put spurs before my own kids in the past it fucks me off,all things said and done loyalty is a dying thing in footie these days though and were just have to wait n see what happens in the summer geez

onedavemackay said...

bty. Actually, your point about Berba staying on to become a Spurs Great is a good one.

I think he is certainly one of the most talented players we've had but to become a "Great" I agree he would need to have played for us for a few more years.

odm- btw my top 10 would pretty much be the same as yours or very similar i'd prob swap berba for ardiles though

whats with all this berba-bashing? at the end of the day he's a professional footballer who has no particular affinity with our club like you or i do. yes we chant his name, but so what, tottenham doesn't run through his veins. look at it from his point of view, he's 27/28 and thinks he's good enough for cl football and the only way to secure that is to leave tottenham, i perfectly understand.
this is no campbell situation, he has never professed to have been a tottenham fan all his life, he has never made false promises to allow his contract to run down and go on a bosman, he's just palyed a diplomatic game.
from the clubs point of view, he has 2 years left, if he won't sign an extension, sell him and laugh all the way to the bank with the 15-20m profit we made on him.
from the fans point of view, or my personal view, i'd like to say 'bye dimi, thanks for the (special) memories, thanks for the profit' and i'd urge the club to re-invest the cash wisely
rant over!

No I don't - and you asking the question just reinforces my sense that you were replying to a post I never wrote. I love watching him play - he scores a lot of goals and gets a lot of assists, plus our vice-captain is on record saying he simply loves playing with him - Berba has made Keane a much better player.

But most of all I will miss watching him wait, with all muscles entirely relaxed, despite having half of the opposition defence bumping and barging him, for a high ball to drop onto his chest, so he can effortlessly cushion it and drop it onto his toe. Fredi could do that. No one else at Tottenham ever could. And Fredi never had Berba's vision for what to do with the ball after he had controlled it.

Assuming we sell Berba (and there is a heavy rumour flying about that we are about to sell him to Milan), it all depends on how we spend the proceeds. If we get a properly world-class striker, whether he is already established or in the career position that Berbatov was in when we bought him, then Ramos will adjust the way we play and we'll progress.

If we decide to keep the money and buy a competent journeyman, many of us will be very upset, including me. I don't think it will happen - Levy has learned that lesson and time is too short, as far as his business interests are concerned, to wait another 4-5 years for a leaderless collection of promising youth to mature.

I'm always in favour of signing exciting young players. But we also need the 2-3 key players in their prime, to infuse the rest of our squad with the currently-missing mental strength to deliver what we keep promising.

We could do that with Berbatov if he chooses to stay. Or we can do it without him if we spend the money well.

None of this has any bearing on my original post, which was about media manipulation.
