Tottenham Get A Brazilian

FRED Lyon Striker and Brazilian International extraordinaire ~ A fee has been, in principal, agreed. A ballpark figure of £10,000,000 is muted but frankly very unconfirmed.

The next step will be a meeting with our old friend Damien Commoli on Thursday to thrash out a salary package ~ subject to the jolly being agreeable, the medical is likely to take place on Friday. The wage demands are likely to be relatively huge and as a note of caution in all this, PSG were as close as we were to signing him only a matter of day or two ago.

Bent on loan then...

Bent on Loan? We don't want him, why did we ever buy him in the first place. Totally overated at the time and 16 mill? Come on!

i dunno about this deal..

i'm always happy to see new players coming in but the only reason i can see for the neccesity of this deal is that one of our strikers is on the way out.. which may not be a bad thing..(cough..Bent..cough)..

still waiting on a defender...

at least the Downing deal seems to be finished thank god..

good win last night.

If the Fred deal goes through, (still a big if) Defoe may head South, Harry seems to be interested. This Window I thought Defenders would be on the shopping list... Half way through January, and heard more about players being told they can leave, than new signings.

Fred looks like a good signing

What is clear is Levy has instructed DC to build something to propel us in to CL.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang...

However, lost in the translation is any prioritising.

DEFENDER anyone?

Or is Gunter it?

Fred wants £60k pwk is the word...

*sighs heavily*

I unsure about him... looks like the type who could spit his dummy out.........(Sorry!)

I think you mean a ten mil fee has been MOOTED

Anonymous said...

No, definitely 'muted'. As in, "shhh, don't tell anyone we're spending this much on another random".

Anonymous said...

Tell him Berbatov is on 40k a week and if he thinks he deserves any more than Berbatov then he can sling his long haired Brazilian hook.

Anonymous said...

I think this is possibly fantasy footballl we're talking about.

Anonymous said...

why threaten the chemistry between keano and berbs? don't understand why we'd bring in another high profile striker to mess with things even more. I actually do think an up and coming striker would've been a better move rather than an established one who's going to expect to start every match. why not just let pekhart develop?
60k a week?!?!?! No thanks, Fred, eff off.
this is so frustrating.

Anonymous said...

The fee is £12m euros according to l'equipe. And it'll be Defoe going not Bent. Prob to Pompey or Villa – Redknapp was watching him at the game last night. At least we'll recover the fee spent on Fred. Unfortunately Defoe just couldn't cut it ultimately and the team has now outgrown him. Bent will come good. He's faster than Defoe, a better finisher, has more awareness and makes more intelligent runs. Fred will also give us some cover should Berba up sticks in the summer.

HighandLow said...

Totally agree with Shanemac unless its to replace Berba, but please lets not have them rumours start again.

If Bent or Defoe go, I'd like to see Dave Kitson, mostly as he's a big Spurs fan and would sweat blood for the cause.

Anonymous said...

It could well be that Fred will end up being a replacement for Berbatov and is being bought either with that deliberately in mind or at least as an insurance policy. Fred or no Fred, it looks increasingly likely that Bent and Defoe will be off. One imagines that work contines on sourcing goalie and/or defender and/or central MF...the last of which I would see as the most important although in the slightly longer term I would love to see Hudd and O'Hara develop into the roles of 21st century Hoddle and Ardiles.

Anonymous said...

What about a DEFENDER or two. Nice goal but that dummy sucking routine is pathetic. Sell Bent or put him on loan, either way Comolli's head should be rolling down the High Road.

Anonymous said...

Haven't seen much of Fred, but his goal record speaks for itself.

A.Miniero: 34 Goals 57 Appearances

Cruzerio: 56 Goals 72 Appearances

Lyon: 20 Goals 49 Appearances

Total: 110 in 178

Can't argue with that then can we? Bent's all time goal record is 97 in 237. Goal to game ratio is better than all current strikers, though I do realise it's not the same standard of football. Either way £10m for Fred seems far more logical than £16.5m for Darren Bent.

Supposedly Ramos has politely suggested that Commoli uses his glasses when next watching Stewart Downing play. anything over 6m for him is a joke. I personally think paying more than £4m for him is an unnecessary risk.

On another note did anybody see how Gunter played yesterday? So glad that LYP didn't play. He just seems to bounce around really doesn't he? Can't tackle and rather nail-biting going forward. He must be selling shirts like a mo-fo in the far east is all I can say. Can't believe he once played for PSV and Roma wanted to sign him in the summer!!!

bueller said...

Who the fuck is sanctioning the purchase of another forward? That's just mental.

I honestly think we should be trimming this squad not adding to it. Get rid of some of the shite.

WHO IS IN CHARGE OF OUR BUYING DEPT?

Anonymous said...

This transfer stinks to high heaven of Comolli. Fred is hardly a proven international or even proven first teamer. Lyon stick him on the bench most of the time. He has done sweet FA in the European arena thus far, what makes anyone think he can do well in the premiership if he can't even cut it in Ligue un?

It looks like its a pre-emtive replacement for Berbatov, which though inevitable, is a crying shame. But can't we get someone of a similar calibre?

Don't get me started on Downing... I'm sure that only Comolli will think £12 million for him is a bargain... This Director of Football role at Spurs really is rubbish...

I think you meant 'definitely', Harry.
God I hate that dummy sucking business!

HighandLow said...

this is clearly not the kind attitude we want at the lane.

It's Them and Us said...

As much as Daniel Levy would like you to believe he has no say in transfers I think even he would question the reasoning behind signing a new striker when we have arguably the best quartet in the Premiership on our books. If anyone is going I'd expect it to be Bent (not cup-tied for the FA Cup) for a similar fee -- if not a bit more -- than Fred.

Defoe to sign a contract I reckon. No sources, no whisperings, but just a feeling.

I'd expect also he'll (DC) of let Ramos/Levy know that a defender deal is all-but complete, much like Bolton with Matt Taylor (why we didn't bid is again a mystery. Because he's too old? Haha) and Chelsea were waiting to replace Ben Haim -- which obviously they have.

Unfortunately I think that'll be us done in the window. So ONE experienced centre-half, a young prospect at left-back (or more likely right) and ANOTHER striker. I'm hoping if Downing or Taylor (little hope, but still) come in then we can finally get Steed inside to be one-half of the partnership and it'd be interesting to see how he'd work alongside Jenas.

Personally don't think ANY team should ever loan a player to someone in the same division. But that's just my opinion.

Anonymous said...

put lennon on the left, stick jenas on the right, let malbranque and whoever-the-fuck-else work the centre midfield. berbs and keano are legends. king, daws, chimbo, and lee, cerny in goal. problems solved. no weak transfers needed until the summer when we actually have a good idea how these players fit into Ramos's system. all i want to see in january is another defender. we're playing quality football right now lads, let's let it play itself out for a while.

one last thing.... so far boateng has reminded me an awful lot of ghaly when he first arrived. thanks damien.

whats with people posting there choice of squads? and why gunter... his just made his debut and is primarily a right back.

anyone whoes anyone could say we need a cb, a left midfielder and a top class central midfielder

now to add my 2pennies worth...(well maby 5pence as its worth more than the above comments)... how about some top draw coaches, we concede so many through set pieces, so why not employ top coach to deal with that, and a goal keeping coach for robbo, i had hopes when hans seagers left that we would employ a new coach.

look at how effective our attack is now, any coincidence that ramos favours an attacing game as well as moniz being employed.

anyone else have any thoughts on this?

dont let that goal or his record fool you
this guy is shocking
the french league is abysmal, if players like baros & carew can make it there what does that tell you?
bent and defoe must be going but will anyone shed a tear?

It's Them and Us said...

"anyone whoes anyone could say we need a cb, a left midfielder and a top class central midfielder"

True. But you'd think the guy paid an enormous wage would know this. And the people before him also. I asked in a previous blog who was the last midfield marshall we had and no one could really remember, without going so far back. And the left-winger problem, despite the greatest efforts of Steed, hasn't been resolved. He's been more effective in his career from the middle so it's simply a stop-gap to the problem.

"now to add my 2pennies worth...(well maby 5pence as its worth more than the above comments)... how about some top draw coaches, we concede so many through set pieces, so why not employ top coach to deal with that, and a goal keeping coach for robbo, i had hopes when hans seagers left that we would employ a new coach."

Coaching is a problem. I think when Ghaly went to Brum and complained about running a lot of us thought he's just a fucking tool (and his comments since are further proof to this way of thinking) but the fact Ramos was appauled shows there was a problem. Not bringing in a goalkeeping coach is horrendous. How is that giving either of our keepers any confidence? "We'll sort you out a coach some other time."

Seville weren't ever solid at the back and you only need to look at the top two in Spain to realise that defending is never a priority. Despite Real playing well they still look like a Sunday league side at the back even with Cannavaro and a £20M centre-half partner.

But yes, I do admit, defensively we need to improve -- from coaching, to communication, to logic. And it does start on the training ground. As you said though, as Spanish man that built his reputation on solid-attacking sides, surrounded by fans that want to be entertained, is he going to focus on defending or wait until the summer and hope we snatch a cup for UEFA Cup football next year?

Another Striker is the last thing we need, if we are letting one go please let it be Bent he's not good enough and if we do sell Defoe I think it will come back and bite us on the arse one day. Who do you think will go Harry?

We need a left back a centre back and a left sided midfielder what about pederson.

Two concerns: JD's lack of ambitiion. He can't command a place yet is happpy to 'battle on'? Hmmn.

And anyway? Are you outraged as a consumer? Did I charge you for any of these wonky tips?

If Arshavin doen't land at the Lane ~ and not making excuses, but since we got into negotiations with him we have approached a veritable shedload of clubs. The Ramos factor is HUGE.
Not his influence as such, but it's the desire to furnish him with the tools to do the job.
Add to this the DC file. This guy has players 'on the boil' everywhere. Arshavin is only one. Fred and Downing are two more.

It's Them and Us...
your right there, no real left midfielder since ginola really, seems insane considering we missed out on duff/petrov amongst others in recent years, who cares how old they are. perhaps the club is just run y money men, fools in suits its so frustrating to sit here talking about what needs to be done with our club, its all so plain to see

the coaching side is so plainly obvious, portsmouths defensive record since tony adams came along speaks for itself

and indeed the goalkeeping coach situation must be utterly dissparing for robinson, as people have stated time and time again, alot of robinsons goals are due to his position or indeed his lack of confidence at the moment. anyone recall the wigans first season in the premiership, they had help from a sports psychologist, using certain technicqus to boost the players confidence and give them the believe they can win, perhaps robinson needs some one to one special care and attention...

Anonymous said...

I think if Ramos' eyebrows droop any lower he's going to have to pin them up with tape.

Anonymous said...

I would think most of the spurs transfer rumors are sent out just to hide their true targets, or at least help hiding the players who are really wanted.

Anonymous said...

we need LB and CB. And we need some more creativity in the midfield. Bale will be back for first choice on left midfield. I would prefer Jarque, Arteta (guess Arashavin is more realistic, and I think he could be a great addition too)and for left back I am not sure really... Fred is a good addition, but then we should get the money back through Bent or Defoe. And at least 12m for either of them. Chimbonda can stay until Gunter takes over during next season...

We 'have' to believe that a man of Ramos' experience and stature simply wouldn't allow a young upstart like Comolli to ruin his chances by buying players who don't improve the squad or take us forward.

We also 'have' to believe that Comolli doesn't want the manager he persuaded Levy to go and get at all costs, to fail due to unwanted purchases. They must be communicating surely? So whoever we end up with once the fantasy dust has settled, will be players Ramos feels he can do something with. Never mind their reputation or record. Look at Kanoute at Seville. Yet he struggled under our managers: 16 goals in 64 games for us vs 54 goals in 105 games at seville.

It seems that when we buy a nobody, we complain that he's a nobody but if wen*er buys a nobody, we complain that we didn't get there first or that we don't seem to be able to do the same.

Let the club do their thing and either Comolli will find out that he was right about Ramos, or Comolli will be found out.

EL said...

The 'nobody' bit referred to the alleged Fred interest by the way.

Trust Ramos trust Ramos trust Ramos, he told Damien Comolli to fuck off and dnt he dnt want downing. Give Ramos 4 years and den we wil b celebratin success yearly.

Anonymous said...

I have to say it shocks me there are so many negative and utterly ridiculous comments about Bent and Downing.

How are we able to say Bent is a waste of money? he has been given few games, has actually scored a few in the games he has been given, and has since been injured. Keane & Berba have (rightly so) started 80% of games, and so what do people expect? Bent to come on for the last 20 mins and score a hatrick in each appearance?! - utter nonsense.

We have to give him a run of games before we can judge him...

As for Downing, your opinions on his lack of form, or fall from grace is based on what? one bad showing for England?, or do you all subscribe to Middlesborough TV to see how he is getting on. He is a talented young left winger, which is something we could do with, and in my opinion playing for a better club like ours will improve him greatly!

Its amazing how fickle fans can be, and it makes me embarrased to say i support the same club. Too quick to judge, and often making opinions based on little evidence.

How is our club meant to progress with impatient supporters like that?

Anonymous said...

Right. Read this carefully.

1. Comolli is Ramos' boss. He's the senior member of staff.

2. He recruited and appointed Ramos. Ramos is Comolli's choice.

3. Comolli has a higher place in the club hierarchy, is closer to the board and has more status.

Is that clear now?

So Ramos is in no position "not to allow" Comolli to do anything.

These aren't mere fan opinions. They come from the club's summaries of the job descriptions of Director of Football and Head Coach when Arnesen/Comolli and Jol/Ramos were recruited.

So many fans seem to have no idea at all of the structure at the club.

Freds Dead

Harry Hotspur said...

On Bent...

I wouldn't knock him on the few appearances he has made, I'd add them to the occasions that he failed to make it into the first team and then knock him.

For ten million plus (I refuse to use the red top style £16 mill inflated fee especially as I don't hear his name and England being used in the same sentence at present) I among others would expect Bent to be of a better standard than the patchy Defoe. He so far has not achieved this.

Maybe when his injury subsides he'll come back, force his way in the squad and dazzle us.

Cynic? Yes. And I was all for him.

Anonymous said...

doubt we will be selling Defoe or spasticshoes if the fred deal has fallen through.

Listening to the fred comments and those of PSG he sounds like a bit of a cunt.

Anonymous said...

Bit of an odd one this. Why are we spending so much money on a guy who cannot get in Lyon's team? I mean, we murdered them in the Peace Cup...

Anonymous said...

If the reports are true about Fred, two words; FUCK HIM!

If Defoe wants to leave for Villa, then let him for no less than 10 million. But if he wants to stay and sign a new contract and at the same time fight for his place then let him. By Bent refusing to leave for WestHam sounds like he wants to fight for his place and is on a longer contract than Defoe anyway, if so let him be also. Defoe or/and bent are not the worst 3rd/4th choice strikers a team who is 12th in the prem could have...let's face it that is reality and a reason why these cocky fuckers like Fred think they're too good for us. Let him rot on Lyon's bench, not ours.

Then lets get on with signing players in positions we really need.

Central Defence: Jarque, Haim and Brown, 1st choice Jarque and I'd even have one of Haim or Brown as extra back up given our current injury liability, lack of experience and in some cases lack of quality.

Left Wing: If we can sign Arshavin, then great, if not we have Steed, O'Hara in the short-term with a few appearances by Taarabt. In the long-term if we still haven't signed anyone, then Baler has shown enough quality to do a job there. But if Dowining is signed by RAMOS' choice at the end of the day, we will fully support him.

Apart from that, any quality left-back or centre-midfield signings would be welcome, but unlikely given the lack of availability and short period to sign players in January.

If so, we'll just make do with what we have till summer when there's more time and availability of quality players, not more average players hanging around clogging up squad numbers.

COYS!

If we signed Arshavin it may well be to play through the middle as he does for both Zenit and Russia. He is a right footer and a brilliant passer so while he might be effective, he would be wasted out on the left.

TREES, TREES, AND MORE BLOODY TREES!!!!!!

Every link on the spurs official web seems to be showing a picture of a tree in the foreground of any given stand. do these trees actually exist. are our PR guys trying to give the impression that the lane nestles in a quaint essential English orchard. will Gloria hunniford soon be seen giving reviews on "leafy hart lane"
will Gloria be confused for Ron Atkinson sparking mass hysteria and speculation among our already excitable press. what would this mean for zokora, jenas, tom hud, the glove Muppet etc

Cheers Pete the yid.

Hope we can get a quality player like Arshavin, otherwise even I will have to resign to the realism of the lets sign England squad players who never get a game in the first 11, and are "ones for the future"...in which some cases the future never comes!

Still at least I've given up on us signing players like Van Der Vaart, Quaresma etc.

Lets pray we win a cup or miraculously make a UEFA spot through league positioning.

Or else I'm afraid we'll be competing with the likes of Newcastle for under achievers and youngish players with potential again...or as usual...grrrhh!

I still love my Spurs, always will, suppose we need to accept the transition period between the Jol to Ramos era which will probably take another season or two before we'll be in a postion to be genuine top 4 challengers again - fact of life. Still under Jol, after that one season we nearly made it, don't feel he was equipped with the know how that Ramos has to get us there like he did with Sevilla.

Face it. We are doomed if DC continues to bring in players he considers to be talented (Zokora) and players who will one day be talented (Kaboul) who get thrown into the deep end and shown up for the inexperienced youth they are (KPB).
