Tottenham's New Shirt: Polyester Nasty Cash Cow Or Must Have Design Classic?

I would imagine the number of people who have actually stood in the same room/ got to wear this new shirt is very small, but your opinions are as ever the driving force here...

I'm not down on the design as such. White, simple and ultimately you cannot choose your sponsors logo/ colours etc unless money is irrelevent to you. But I am left a little cool by what ought to be a must buy shirt.

But will there be a broader range of shirts to celebrate 125 years of push & run? Something that isn't made from recycled crisp packets? The retro shirts in the Megastore are 100% cotton and a pleasure to wear.

Your thoughts please..

I personally think it looks a simple classic, I would be a fan of white shorts to go with it ! like the 60's double winning team ! ;-)

CyprusYid says...The new shirt is miles better than the current one, purely because of it's simplicity. No patches of blue anywhere. I don't know if I like the V-neck cut, but it's got to be better than the crazy cut of the 2006-7 shirt. Mate, I wear the blue sffort of the current Shirt, only because it is my beloved team's shirt. I hate the feel of it. As you say, Polyester is not comfortable on the skin, and we ain't built with bodies like football players and the fit, although baggy for some, because of the rigidity of the cloth, there is no give and stretch. So, if the official replica shirts are not the same as the real ones that the footballers wear, why not make them with cotton? Breathes better, feels better, eaier to wash (My shirt has to be washed in segments to stop the gold rubbing off the collar! I guess I will have to cough up for a new one after the 12th May! Are you sure the pricee will still be £39.99 without number or letters on the back? Or the Premier league knobs on the sleeves? COYS!!!

The shirt's still £39.99 and you can pre-order it already if you're a ST holder or member.

I vote for design classic. It's classy. Just a shame that we have to have a sponsor at all - imagine how good it would look then.

Definitely a design classic. We're the lillywhites. Simple as that.

the simpler the better - but what is that material they make it with?

archibaldsteve says: I would dream to have a cotton replica shirt. Much more comfortabel and I would buy it as an item of everyday wear, not just once every match attended. They could keep all the badges made from polyester to hold colour etc and seams too for durability. I hate the red Mansion logo and that it promotes gambling. Not a good message. The design looks retro which is conventional for commmerative merchandise. I heard off other forums that the shorts and socks will be all white which I like(more reason to have not had the red Mansion logo, could make the square bit small with the blue Mansion lettering current size as a more visually appealing compromise). BTW. I see encouraging news on another site from the usually unreliable Daily Mail. The wording and content is above their usual standard but centers around us possibly using Wembley as stop gap while WHL is developed to accommodate more than 50'000 capacity. Says may have new stadium
ready as soon as 2008-2009 I think, if we get green light for Wembley. The info seemed to echo the course of more informed sounding Spurs forum contributors over the last few months about WHL redvelopemnt.
To round off, 90% cotton shirt in plain white with cockerel and kit manufacture logo would be perfect and sponsors logo should not be red
with sponsor perhaps a environmentally and morally sound company. Sounds like I'm dreaming but you have to be specific when you want the best.

archibaldsteve says: To answer Harry's original question I think the shirt is a cash cow due to nature of sponsor and huge red logo which spoils it and the fact that it is made from nasty uncomfortable polyester. As Spurs shirt fair retro look about it although I prefer a round neck. Having said all that v necked 81 shirt is my favourite and plain white 50's and 60's shirts with large cockerel also have robust and comfortable classy look about them.

shorts and socks should be plain white too

archibaldsteve says: Yeah just re - read Daily Mail entry about WHL re-devlopement and I had posted that I thought new WHL could be ready as soon as as 2008-9 but what it says is if all goes ahead as desired then we would have temporary tenancy at Wembley from 2008-9. Apologise for error. Still sounds better than earlier talk recently about us only hearing an announcement in 9 months time about developing only in 2012. Sonner we increase capacity the better. Hope it is at WHL as that would be fist choice for me. Although I would prefer bigger than 50,000+-. 60,000
at least with the ablity to incrementally increase at steady rate would be ideal.

How do we know this is the real deal? seem to remember an absolute stinker being touted around on here not so long ago as the new home shirt.........

Calm please, ladies....

I quite like the simplicity of the shirt and without going down the tedious fantasy of 'and without the sponsor's name ruining it' route...

...maybe it's because I've hit what is my golden era of intollerance... but I really cannot be done with wearing that nylon muck anymore.

Great to see I'm not alone and I bet if they were consulted (ha!) the bulk of fans would say the same.

I'm not down on wearing replica shirts, but the cotton jobs are 100% nicer to wear, more flattering and actually look good in a bar with a pair of jeans on...

Ugh. I dislike the V-Neck in a big way. If it were a rounded neck I'd be more warm to it. I think the retro tops in the Spurs stores are a MUCH nicer homage. Just a clarification; this ISN'T the new home top for next season, is it? It's merely an anniversary one?

^^ MUCH nicer, in my admittedly worthless opinion, if you're talking about simple, elegant, design classics.

go do some work, you snores.

Cash Cow for sure but Im quessing there will be loads of commmerative merchandise out. I'll be buying some stuff but not that shirt.

Its ok but sponser spoils it and the material feels like paper! Keeper kit is nice material so why is the outfield kit so itchy?
Our kits have been sick sinse addidas.

Personally love the classic look. Non fussy with an old style cockerel giving it that bit of retro appeal. Love the v-neck too.

IMO one of the best I've seen for a long time.

My bra strap shows underneath the new shirts.

Anonymous said...

Haven't seen the shorts yet Syd...but hope their accomodating for my jock strap...lol

Anonymous said...

Oh shit...I've heard the shorts will be a white string thong...now Berba will look even more of a tart with his headband...lol!

Once I've got my head around the nasty material, the spoiling logo, the 1000% mark-up or whatever and the fact that I'd be paying 40 quid to be a walking advertisment for a gambling corporation; I'll probably choose to admire it on other people.

I would actually get a chocolate & gold one except that the club has made it almost impossible for me to achieve that by under-producing.

Good old Spurs!

Why don't you shut the fuck up, Jol? AWARD:

Why don't you shut the fuck up, Jol? AWARD( part 2):
"Dawson is my player of the season, not Berbatov."

Well, Jol will keep his darlings Keane and Dawson and Berbatov will go some place else where the manager apprecciates him more. Isn't life fair?
