Worry Over Transfers

History has taught us two things. 1. Don't attempt to invade Russia in the winter. 2. If you don't have a solid defence, your weak one will haunt you to your grave. Transfer speculations are a worry. Once we rummage through the garbage ie Lua Lua etc we are left with a pool of varying talent comprised mainly of strikers. I could weep. With the exceptions of Lee - who ought to play on the right, Dawson - who gets better and better every game and King, WE DO NOT POSSES ANY OTHER FIRST ELEVEN DEFENDERS.

The sooner we drop the 'mend & make do' mentality and address the cancer in this squad the better. Before the violins are drawn for the others, let me tell you that we wish to play CL and the likes of Stalteri, Kelly and Gardner are currently out of their depth domestically. The bench may better them or they can go to elsewhere. We are a profitable company and it beggars belief that we persevere with 2nd rate drones. Jol either has a secret agenda whereby a limo with 15 million worth of CL quality back four is due to pull up outside the Lane a week into the transfer window, or he has a not so secret agenda whereby he is fannying around chasing the coat-tails of a myriad international goalscorers, most of whom appear no more likely to leave their current clubs than fly to the moon.

I cannot emphasise enough that Defoe is absolute class. Endless questioning of his form / talent are devoid of worth when he is not being played for 90 minutes or is played, but in the capacity of the small guy waiting for scraps from Mido's headers. What a rubbish set-up that is. Rubbish. Keane has matured greatly and Jol has obviously taken my advice in previous posts and decided to play him a shade deeper than before. Mido may not be svelt and lean enough for everyone's taste, but he is our top scorer with a further six assists to his name. Danny Murphy. His assist rate was the best in the premiership BEFORE joining us.

And there were posts on many sites asking why we bought him. Not a daft question given the circumstances, but again nothing to do with the man himself, more the manner in which he was played. I believe in Jol, but I'm not putting up with him fielding these poor guys who aren't up to the task when each game is so vital. C'mon Martin let's see that 'Dutch Connection' buzzing again, let's see some signings that make us strong where we are weak. But most of all, let's see the talent we have deployed effectively. Why should I pay you £70 to watch a full back who will ultimately be flogged off for an 'undisclosed' fee to some two bob club foul up when we can afford virtually any quality replacement in the world?

Decent article for a blog!

Stalteri has to go or go away and improve, but my fear is that Kelly isn't the finished article either.

We need to urgently import some defensive talent if we wanna b any way fit for CL.

There's supposed to be one or two on the way if the rumour mills are to be believed. Be good though.

The Birmingham result showed we able to find a bit of fight when we need to. It wasn't pretty but what the ****. Does anyone know when memberships go back on sale?

A grade fullbacks are hard to get hold of. Can some of you suggest some examples of players who we could afford, who would be interested and who's club would let them leave.

Wayne Bridge at 3 mill would be an obvious choice. Would Glen Johnson too be taking the biscuit?

i know he's not a defender (before you tell me ) but has anyone seen the rumour that we have a deal for £22 million with torres IF we do CL????

good comments to a good blog. bridge is worth a look, but i think if we are to go to the next level, we should be buying the £6 - 8 million defenders. dont ask me who, cos i dont know ! italian / dutch / german ?
lots of speculation probably for the summer, should be interesting. a lot depends if we get that coveted 4th place.

Re: Dannyboy.

Maybe it's a tad simplistic but I tend to agree that any fullback a club will allow to leave for less than 5 or 6 mil is either not top drawer or 'potential' and we've enough of those for the minute. bridge I can sort of see being top 4 material if things went well for him but to be honest I don't remember much about glen jonson from his playing days. Is he really that good? I believe there are fewer top grade fullbacks around and therefore fewer for sale than say wingers or strikers so the good ones can be more choosy about which club they join. If that's true then regular CL football is more likely to be a requirement so I'm not expecting any ashley coles or Gallas' any time soon. Hope I'm completely wrong on all counts.

Totally agree, we have to spend the class of money on our defence that some might have previously reserved for strikers. Lee is fundemetally playing out of position and to his credit it has been more successful than not. I feel that the issue of who is available / might walk our way domestically is spot on also. The route for answers has to be abroad.

Just to add that there will be fresh articles weekly and on special occaisions, i.e. when something needs saying! HH
