Spurs Striker Is A Cigarette Smoker...

One page I regularly enjoy is that of the England goalie formerly known as Calamity, David James. I nearly fell off my polo pony when he casually revealed in this piece http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/sport/2008/03/16/its_time_for_the_whole_game_to.html ... Dimitar Berbatov is a smoker...

Previously it was a revelation to me that Michael Dawson was at least a 'party smoker'. My initial reaction, as a fan, to the photo of him jarred up avec snout was that I wasn't hugely impressed. But as an ex smoker (I only ever did it to make me look hard, you understand) who has since been caught in possession of the odd oily rag after too many wifebeaters, I did at least sympathise.

I'd take a wild crazy guess that the Premiership is littered with many others. But in an age where clubs are fixated with dietary intakes, isotronic drinks, and gyms with machines that would leave Dr Who scratching his head, do hidden ciggies really have a place in the dressing room?

What are your thoughts on these multi million pound athletes partaking in a habit that is scientifically proven to be how put it mildly... er, not good for ...humans? Is Ramos happy with 20 Players?

Harry hope this is not true! although it wud explain why he is so bloody lazy!

Ginola would often be seen having a fag out the window of the players lounge at WHL after games.

I suppose you get away with it if you deliver the goods on the pitch?

do you think that because dimi is a smoker thats why he being made to play more minutes than keano.

in some bizzare form of punishment...ya know...to make him realise that if he quit he could probably actually make runs for the ball every now and then...

just a thought.

This isn't good news. As it's from James I won't challenge it. He's not your regular media darling and I too also read his stuff, but either way mates, not good.

Great news. Let's get all of them smoking then maybe they'll all be as good as Berba.

Harry why don't you ring Juande in the morning first thing ?

I'm sure he'll be grateful.

Ardiles is our greatest ever 20 a day man. If it's good enough for Arnie Schwarzenegger, well maybe we should call League Cup Winner Berbatov the Tottenham Terminator! COYS!

Not being funny but who gives a toss. If he wants to smoke let him. he gets judged and paid on his performances. I don't give a monkey's if he sniffs glue.

He's Bulgarian, what do you expect? 20p a pack out there !!

I don't know where you draw the line. I think it's expected that most footballers like a bit of rough shag, but it's alarming to see them spitting like a Camel.

Before the end of the current campaign, we'd all like to see Bent get a Lucky Strike or two. I know for a fact that, during the transfer window, a Scotch Buy was brought to the club.

As the dietary regimen continues, it's likely we'll see a few more Virginia Slims. Meantime, it would great in the remaining games if Lennon could get his act together and deliver a few Fine Cuts into the box - otherwise his career at Spurs could go West.

Next season, Ramos will ensure that the team gets a Fresh Blend in midfield. I trust him to Filter the good squad members out of the bad during the summer. Everyone wants Berbatov to keep his 24-carat skills at the Lane but, when his heart isn't in a game, all we see is a Gold Flake.

The fact is, when next season opens, we may only see the stubs of the current team.

maybe it's a one off - who cares anyway.

yea it would be better for him not to smoke but he probably isn't exactly on 20 a day - the odd one will have almost minimal effect.

also, if he smokes enough to have an effect then it's probably a good thing - he definitely would be leaving us this summer if he was any better

if he wants to smoke then let him smoke... as far as i'm concerned the man's a genius and thus can do whatever he wishes..

in fact such is my devotion to Berb that i'm seriously considering taking up smoking now..

also i really hope this information is not used by idiots as a stick to beat our hero whenever he has a less than par performance.... and when i say less than par i of course mean by his standards....and even then he'll still be miles ahead of the rest..

please stay Berb...i love you...

I hope its not true, because smoking will probally affect Berbs game. Not to mention the health problems that can come from smoking.

Mind you what about Bent? He could do with playing much better than he is showing, so a few fags migh help in his case.

For one reason or another Sol Campbell hasn’t been mentioned in this conversation. Is that for homophobic or sac religious reasons???? Discuss.

How about all the drinking footballers?

No one complains about them enjoying legal things

Once found myself in the players bar after the match at Portman Road in nineteen eighty or so. Bad tempered game meant that the Spurs players got straight on the bus home(I was gutted), so I only got to meet the Ipswich team, at least half of whom smoked like chimneys. Couldn't believe it.

9.37anon, I'm jealous of the amount of time you have on your hands.

Would Alex Ferguson have him smoking......?

I bet he smokes Camel - He's that cool.

Didnt Emerson used to have a fag in the toiltet cubicle at half time?

Vialli smoked too i understand.

Footie players are prob young enough to get away with it as long as they arent going at it too heavily!

Next up: News that Zokora is a crackhead - he plays like one.

thats a fair blunt in that pic! no wonder he's so chilled out and thats why he loses it when he don't get the ball right to him, he's para ,thinks the rest of the team hate him and that they are doing it on purpose its all become clear!

I don't think that Franz Beckenbauer would be that impressed with Berbatov.

Who cares if he smokes, Teddy Sheringham smokes and he's still playing, if you keep in shape you can do it. Berbas the best!!! Yid 4 ever

Not entirely shocking news. In at least one of the pics in the Bulgarian OK magazine spread it showed him cigar in hand. I kind of figured then, unless you smoked yourself you wouldn't pose for pics with, erm, something to smoke.

If our star player wants to smoke then let him smoke! Don't play with fire!
