Tottenham Hotspur's King Crocked Again

Bad News just in that Ledley King has suffered yet another setback in his neverending return to full fitness.

Before the Long Live The King Brigade arrive with the usual 'how dare you make him injured with your made up stories 'es da best ov da very best' schtick... Let me point out I understand who he is and I would love him to return as soon as humanly possible. But it's WAKEY WAKEY TIME and we have to face the reality of the situation.

The reality is that Tottenham will be without him 'til nigh on Christmas and even before this latest setback it was only anticipated that he'd contribute for maybe two dozen games this season anyway...

Time for Tottenham to bite the bullet and stop acting like he's an active member of the squad. The defence at WHL is an abysmal afterthought. Players out of postion and rubbish as standbys. Gardner couldn't fetch £2 million on the open market IF he made the medical. Rocha is a classic example of buy cheap, buy twice.

Dawson and Kaboul are on their way to greatness. Lee is a high achieving average player. Bale may well yet be a winger. Injuries to one of them sends us into an embarrassing spiral of mend and make do.

Not good enough. Tottenham need to uncross their fingers on the whole King issue and open the envelope marked Plan B.

Now.

How dare you tell us something we already know. Your as bad as the evening standard =D

we may have to now accept that Ledders is fundamentally broken and will never be the player he was (or was going to be). Dawson and Kaboul are quality but need experience to help them along. As horrid as it may seem we may need to cut our losses on King when fit and get as much as possible to buy a top centre half to bring on the other two and who plays on average more than one in every four games.

this is too depressing, poor Ledley! and poor us! the transfer window has closed, there is no plan B- we're screwed

I don't understand why we didn't go for Curtis Davies from WBA?? Surely we could have got him on a similar deal to Villa i.e. season loan deal with a view to making him permanent. At least by that time we would have known for sure if Leds is finished.
I totally agree with you Harry and go for Plan B, i just wished Davies was in that envelope!!!

We are not finishing higher than 10th this season.

Ledley is our only leader, without him we resemble any team like Blackburn.

nothing on the official site mate. I also reckon Kaboul was bought with this news in mind. You don't spend 8.5M on a defender to bench him. Come on Spurs, tell us the truth.

My friend has been treating Ledley follwing his operation earlier in the year. She told me before the season even started that the Dr had said he is unlikely to play at all this season

Anonymous said...

Is that on the level?

I mean the comment about Ledders doc?

Heya guys has anyone read the reserve report against birmingham. Boateng looked to be amazing again just as i've heard from everyone whos seen him play. also Taarabt played and looked to have a good game aswell. I wanna see Boateng in CM soon. Granted iam not a fool and he should be spared the arsenal game, But then again if ur that good then why not??

Anonymous said...

I simply can't believe these clowns having a go at Martin Jol. FFS, people! He's the best manager we've had since Sir Bill Nick.

Anonymous said...

10.06 - agree on both points. I am a massive Ledley fan, and was really excited about getting him back and up to full fitness by the end of the year. I figured with him at 100%, we could really challenge for the UEFA and FA cups. Even if he returns to the lineup early next year, he won't be back at 100% until Mar/Apr.

I think that we are in big time trouble this season for all competitions, mainly because I don't hold Harry's high regards for Dawson...yet. There is no question he has all the talent and the heart to be a great player. He just has yet to show any signs of moving to that next level under Jol's guidance. Too many lost marks, too many goals against where he didn't close down his striker and way too many times where he backs up instead of holding a high line, allowing other teams to take over possession way too easy.

This season just keeps getting more & more depressing by the day. I have 7 matches from this weekend on tape, and for the first time in many years, I have no desire to watch any football :-(

Anonymous said...

Look guys this guy normally knows what he is talking about and so far i have had no reason to doubt what he says!!!

If this is true about the King then we are in trouble with the transfer window just shut, why did you think we were trying to sign Curtis Davis???

For a laugh that we needed another defender, we are light in the middle, we 2 good players in Daws and Kab but i think Rocha is no better than an OK player, and Gardner isn't that good!!!

Anonymous said...

My son saw King, Bent, Gardner and Routledge going into a fitness centre in Abridge yesterday for a swim. Given that the other three are almost fit I wondered if it signified that King too was well on the way but who knows. Anyweay even if he came back in a few weeks we all know that within a month or two he would be out again.

I got pilloried on this site over a year ago for advocating that we sold King. My rationale was that 20 games a season was not enough and that he would command a huge fee. Its clearly too late now. 20 games is down to 15 if we are lucky and his transfer value is next to nothing.

It is another example of bad planning by the management as a whole or in this case no planning at all. With King out we only have Dawson and Kaboul who are worth considering in central defence and we are relying on them keeping fit for another (hopefully) 50+ games and didn't Kaboul come with a reputation for being injury prone?

There are knock on effects too. With King out we have no real captain. If the armband goes to Keane then Defoe continues to get arse splinters and if it goes to Robinson...well God help us. He is about as inspirational as Baldrick, except Baldrick could catch a football (or pig's bladder as it would have been then).

So better give the armband to Dawson as he is certain to play every week, keep our fingers crossed neither gets injured and then spend the comning months looking for a decent January purchase (decent means not another Rocha).

To be honest though I see no way that we are going to stop leaking goals because nothing has really changed since last season through the spine of the team.

Anonymous said...

(my previous blog never appeared so here is version 2)

I see people are finally waking up to what I have been saying for over a year i.e. we needed to sell King. Problem is now his transfer value, which would have been £20 million is probably at best a tenth of that.

Now we are stuck with just two centre halves, one of whom is still of unknown quality and came with a reputation of being injury prone and both wil;l be needed every game.

There are also serious implications on the captaincy. Giving it to Keane means he plays every game too, with all the implications that has for Defoe and Bent and giving it to Robinson would be a catastrophe.

So it looks like Dawson but we are crying out for an older head to run the show and close out games we have won and stop those constant 90th minute goals. Two already this season.

I am embarrassed to read these comments from fellow Spurs supporters, full of half truths and useless inuendo's, treating the players and club like your playing Championship Manager, injuries to players are as routine as anything in football, ledley played for years without injury and unfortunately he is having a bad run of things at the moment, but he'll be back, in time, and we'll all get the benefit of him leading the side again as he has done in the past with excellence. and the players who are filling in are trying as hard as they can to play to their best ability for the club we love, they may not be as good as the player who's place they aspire to fill, but they are reaching for improvement all the same.

No one really knows what is going on, and the club lets us know when there is news on players etc. So please calm down, there is enough going on without scaremongering and negative posts and feelings.

Who cares about King? He is just a minor blip on the catastrophic organisation of both club and team. We currently have a team going nowhere supported by (judging by the overwhelming comments supporting Jol) an army of blind idiots who do not know the meaning of the word fickle. So King comes back...you really think that will make any difference? I seem to remember he played in a load of last minute defeats/draws over the last 2 1/2 years and he cannot head a ball to save his life when defending. I think rather than consider moving to another stadium the Board should just consider re-naming us as Hackney Marsh Rovers or even Tottenham Bottlers just so that we can set our expectations at the right level. What a shambles in the Boardroom, on the pitch and among the supporters. Time for changes in all areas...a Board that will act decisively without listening to the bleatind of the blind who think you can make everything right by singing love songs, a manager who can release the talent assembled in the squad to make it greater that the sum of the parts and a fan-base that can understand and analyse what is happening to our team without the aid of rose-tinted glasses. One previous post said lay off Jol he is the best manager we have had since Nicholson, well I would say that this is both inaccurate given what Burkinshaw achieved and also an insult to the memory of Bill. Anyone who saw Bill's teams playing would have nothing but contempt for the performances under Jol. As usual in life it seems that the mediocre majority will have their way, Jol will be with us for at least this season, the Board will not make the fundamental changes needed in the management, medical, training and conditioning areas and we will be where we deserve to be ie: mid-table. If there was as much support for fundamental change as there is for singing silly love songs (apologies to Sir Paul) then maybe, just maybe, we could move forward, but it ain't gonna happen.

Anonymous said...

Bollocks to Curtis Davies the guy had one decent season in the championship, maybe a decent gamble at 5m, but any more than 7m is beyond it.

Dawson and Kaboul are a good young set of centre halves that are only going to get better. I think Dawson was learning well playing alongside the experienced Ledley King. We do still need to sort out some cover though, Rocha and Gardner can't hack it at the top end of the prem, even as cover.

I can't see King ever making more than 20 appearances for us in a whole season, but him alongside Kaboul would be absolutely mouth watering. I also think LYP is playing some good football at the moment...

EL said...

Hasn't Jol said on several occasions that Ledley's injuries are all different types? That would indicate that he's been unlucky rather than that he has an ongoing and unshakable problem with one part of his anatomy which would eventually end his career. Who knows? Maybe once his latest problem is over, he'll come back strong and his run of bad luck will be over. In the meantime, if the worse case scenario makes an unwelcome appearance, Kaboul looks the closest thing to a new Ledley I've seen in recent years. The club did well to get him.

Get Kev & Tar-wrapped involved too.

We'll be fine.

Go on the Spurs!

James Cutmore: I agree with the points you make Harry with regards to us being short at the back. The point i would like to make is that how comes Commoli is not coming under any pressure from the board/fans?
I think he has bought in some fantastic players, Berbatov, chimbonda, Bale, Kaboul, Boaetang, Bent? BUT how comes he goes over the radar when criticism is handed out?
Jol takes off Keane against Fulham and gets murdered for it, Commoli fails to buy a left midfielder or a holding midfielder and instead blows a large chunk of our budget on a striker that has unsettled defoe and put even more pressure on Jol with rotation etc. The squad looks overly heavy up front, and lightweight in midfield. If we had a more solid midfield we would concede less goals, our defence is not protected enough.
For me the biggest problem with Spurs league start has been the transfer activity, and not Jols tactics.
Maybee Daniel Levy should be looking to replace other areas instead of the manager.

We didnt have King pretty much all last season either and done ok!We went n got Kabhoul who looks class imo and is prob one that would of ended up down the road in the past along with tarrabt! This bloke is a likely future France Captain, same old story tho with spurs fans not knowing a good player if they came and booted them in the arse, its always the same with a couple of our better players getting abuse and at least 1 of our crappest being loved because they wave at the crowd!(fruend, zakora).Shame about King But if our coach could organise the deffence we'd be ok , but still its funny how the staunch Jol supporters are sounding more like him everyday , its Commoli(wasnt too many complaining bout the players we had at the start)its the players(who trains them, organises them and manages them?)its coz Kings out(we conceded the same stupid goals with him in the team under Jol) Sick of excuses!!

This way were in the driving seat for once and dont forget defoe aint signing up and is likely to do one too!

The Mirror says Jol had to face down the frustrations of Robbie Keane, who could not understood why he had been taken off when he and Dimitar Berbatov were running riot.

Keane is a Jol-backer in the dressing room but felt he had no option other than to query the tactical decisions, while Berbatov was said to have been "sulking" at the criminal loss of two points.

See you're still knocking Spurs Odyssey, Harry, but didn't you make a big fuss in Spring when they said Ledley would have to retire?

Anonymous said...

ok people. of course Berba is sulking, but his problems first and most are personnal.
he came back very sad from holidays, even before starting playing again.
and then if the job isn't working either, he has to be depressed, right?

Kaboul looks great on the ball but he's still naive off it.

The real problem is that we don't know who our CM is. JJ, Zokora, The Hudd, Boateng, Steed... - they've all got their problems. None are certs.

So, with an unstable CM and weak centre backs, we're gonna ship goals this season.

So, our success rests on Berba, Keane, Defoe, Bent, Lennon, Taraabt... Hey, actually, it's not so bad. It's just gonna be hairy at times.

Harry Hotspur said...

Contrary to media reports Ledley King has not suffered a setback following knee surgery in the summer.

The skipper is making good progress in his recovery and medical staff are satisfied with his rehabilitation so far.

"Ledley has suffered no setback, he has no pain or swelling in his knee and is building up his fitness," commented Wayne Diesel, Head of Medical Services at the Club. "I am satisfied that he is on course with his rehab and is making steady progress. We have always said that we would not look to rush him back as that would be counter-productive, so this will not be dictated by timeframes but by goal-specific stages in his rehab."

Ledley, reacting to unhelpful, inaccurate speculation said: "Far from suffering any setback, I am in fact really pleased with the way things are going. No player enjoys watching from the sidelines and my sole focus is on getting fit and back in the squad."

Well when I saw this story last night I didn't take alot of notice, I dont often usually as if you believed every site featured on Newsnow then you'd go insane, and this one is not really much better than any others for real information. Some good links to Youtube though. Anyway I didn't post because I didn't really believe it, and now the club have had to clarify it and everything is going smoothly. So shows probably best to not read these silly poor informed "articles" and make knee jerk statements like he should be sold, and everything gets worse, and statements like this. Wait a few hours and save the typing time, and the truth comes out from a proper source. No offence Harry but you must understand why i'd say such things!

What planet are you on? He's doing fine? Clive Allen has kicked more balls on WHL grass than King in the last year.

Time to wish him well and move on. We're running a club here not a fucking retirement home. Time to employ players who can deliver. If Levy wants CL football he ain't gonna get it with an IOU from Kings doc.

I trust that the same people knocking Harry will also be giving stick to the source on ftl?

Also, the real issue here has to be king's long term use if he is destined to miss so many games. Some fans almost see him as a talismanic figure who doesn't need to play that often he is so revered. I think the club and king are stalling. He won't be back for weeks and weeks and weeks so who is to know if he had another setback or not? It's a mercenary business football and the team cannot progress with one of it's so called best players on the med table. Reading through the comments here there are an awful lot of you in denial.

I am looking at King returning in central midfield. If he can play there for England, he can do it for Spurs. He would still be there at set pieces but would also add some "beef" to the undercooked midfield. With Bale and Lennon either side even Jenas could be carried and maybe even look good in such great company. Also great to have everyone fit for the derby (except King) it would be great if Lennon has had time to recapture the form which terrified defences and speculated 20 million pound transfers to Europe's finest clubs.

Leds is on of the best half-backs ever to have played for Spurs and I saw a few including Maurice Norman, Mike England and all the ones since. He is good in the air, has great pace, can tackle and can read the game. If he had played for a better team and had more luck he would have Rio's place in the England team - and he would do a far better job than that overrated waster. I hope he is going to make it back into the team very soon but if he should never play again he deserves our thanks and gratitude for his loyalty and 100% commitment to THFC.

3.(LB)Y.P Lee
4.(CB)M.Dawson (should be fit)
5.(CB)Y.Kaboul
6.(LW)G.Bale
7.(RW)A.Lennon (should be fit)
8.(CM)K.P Boateng
9.(CM)J.Jenas
10.(CF)D.Berbatov
11.(CF)R.Keane (c)

It has been alleged that I am related to Bale as I have done nothing but champion him.

He's good stuff in my book and represents what is good.

He's dangerous. Not the finished product to use the Hackneyed phrase..but dangerous enough.. his last goal was tremendous. I would've probably assisted Berba if it was me.

There's loads of relatively low key sensational work to come from Bale and Harry will welcome every play...

We need King. Even just for one more season while Dawson earns his stripes. I feel a lot of people have forgotten just how good he was as a solid CB and team player. can i just ask what we're hoping for from jenas? i just don't see anything other than a few well struck shots every other game. as far as a real midfielder i haven't seen anything since his forest days. leave him off for one game at least! let him earn his spot like everyone else. enough of this bloody coddling. say what you want about zokora and tainio at least you know what you're going to get from them every game.

Dannyboy/820 - finally some Spurs fans I can respect. It's getting very frustrating listening to fans dumping on the best player we have had in ages.

Wake up call people - theres not a player in the world close to Ledley's level that is going to give 1/2 a thought to playing for Spurs, I dont care how much money is thrown at them. A proven CM is going to demand Champions League. Otherwise, we'll have to keep gambling on young studs like Kaboul, and suffer through a few seasons while they grow their games.

Also, there's not a quality defender anywhere that will be available during the midseason transfer window, so if you really want to see us have any success in the Cup competitions or getting into the Top 7 in the EPL, you better start praying hard that Ledley is fit by the holidays!

Daytripper that's the prob mate-prayers ain't enough-he might be be back before Christmas. Sod the official site.the article in the mail sounded convincing enough to me. The club are on a damage limitation exercise. Memberships where sold out by now last season and this time around they're not. I wouldn't be suprised if we start to see empty seats at home games soon. They have to keep the front up intill they can lure in a big name manager for fear of a backlash. It's like Gladiator. The mob must be placated. Levy knows all the I love JolSongs will dry up if he can get Klinsmann in.And I bet you what you want they have approached him.

Dear BJM,

Pasteur doesn't mean anything, it's the name of the scientist who discovered that by flash sterilizing milk, it stays fresh much longer. Pasture however, is herbage used to feed cattle. Or the name given to a field of the stuff.

Dear Sir Goldenberginshtein,

Do you think Rocha is spoiling us?

Dear sean k,

You've placed Boateng in the holding position? I'm confused, isn't he a front-central midfielder?

Harry, the daily mail site, despite being named after a 'newspaper' is probably on a par with Talking Soccer or Tribal Football at their worst. I wouldn't click 'em with yours.

GRAZZA: That midfield looks very lightweight to be competing in the prem to me

BJM?

I think I meant JGM.

I should eat breakfast before posting.

thats called a freudian slip.

dirty dirty jol fans.

GRAZZA: I have a little bit of a problem understanding the few very-anti-jol fans, fair play some just dont rate him (i for one am well aware of his shortcomings) but if we would just stop for one second to think about how we compare him to Wenger, Fergie etc and say "they wouldnt have done that blah blah" the phone-ins have often got Man USA or Arse fans on the blower saying "Fergies lost it - only played one up front" or "Wengers lost it, we cant handle the physical element" so its not as if even the best managers dont cock up - just not so often you might argue.

The clamour for Jols head has surprised and disappointed me a bit though....i dont understand how these people are relating their (understandable) desire for success to a time frame. Say we sacked Jol tomorrow, new guy comes in gets us to fourth (big if) GREAT. He then gets knocked out in the prelim round a la Everton. Will they call for his head? So, he gets replaced, we get to the group stage this time, GREAT. But get knocked out, sack him too? and keep sacking every other fucker that doesnt make Mid Table personified Tottenham Hotspur into invincible Football Gods??? (and there are no managers left!!!)

Sometimes you dont know what you have got until its gone and ive got a feeling this rule applies to us....

I cant believe the shite spouted about the £40 million we have spent - that money is spent to KEEP PACE with the top 4 more than to overtake it in my eyes - i think people actually think that the football workd has stood still while we have been spending!? Look at Man U and Liverpools Spending, not to mention Chelsea and Le Arse.

I think its about time people stopped sniping at whoevers in charge or on the pitch and actually support their team.

Where would this club be if Hoddle was still in charge? I dread to think.

wake up. football isn't fair. i love what ledley did for us as much as the next guy. when fully fit he's probably one of the top centre backs in the country. but ultimately tottenham is at a junction where it can't afford to wait for a player to recover from the myriad of injuries/setbacks he's sustained. when he comes back, he should have to earn his way back into the lineup just like everyone else. we have to win now. we're not a club where we can finish in 5th or 6th place and still expect top talent to look to join us after the season. if we don't finish in the top 4, we're fucked for lack of a better word. if waiting for ledley king to return to full health is distracting us from the urgency of the moment, then he's doing us more harm than good.
come on you keanes.

GRAZZA:

Thats charming Dannyboy! Please elaborate.

Re:Dannyboy.

Just how close to a cock have you had your ear exactly? I thought Grazza made some very valid points.

Re:Shanemac.

We're loaded and we bought the highly impressive Kaboul as cover so it would seem we can indeed afford to wait for Ledley to get fit.

We attracted the likes of Berbatov (and kept him), Bent, Keane, Defoe, Lennon, Chimbonda and Bale, to name a few, whilst in 5th place or lower. So it appears we can finish in that sort of position and still expect top talent to look to join us.

"we're fucked"???

"then he's[Ledley] doing more harm than good"???

Shanemac, if you don't like the idea of surgical or pharmaceutical help, try meditating.

Best wishes

el,
what the hell?
keane came from leeds whilst they were sinking fast. bale and defoe came from championship teams. chimbonda came from fucking wigan. lennon came from leeds and was a huge surprise (it wasn't like there was a bunch of clubs trying to sign him).
the reason we were "attractive" to those players was because they were coming from shitty situations.
the only one you can legitimately use in that argument, my dear el, is berbatov. and even then, we were looking like a safe bet to crack the top 4 the next season.
with the warmest regards,
shanemac
p.s. good rebuttal. no, seriously... well done.

Shanemac,

I'm not sure I understand your point I thought your point was that we'd have trouble attracting top talent. Not that we'd have trouble attracting top talent who were already at top clubs. Bale & Berbatov both chose us over manure whilst we were 5th placed finalists. Chimbonda, Keane, Defoe etc are pretty much top talent. I can't myself see why it matters where they came from. Maybe I don't get what you meant but then I've never been that bright.

I still think "we're fucked" & "Ledley will do us more harm than good" are pretty wild statements. Not that that's a crime or anything.

el, the tone of my post was pretty much uncalled for. my apologies for that. i was just basically trying to point out that in order to crack the top four we need to have a squad that matches the quality of the top four. i don't see that talent in our squad right now save berbatov. if we fail to reach the greener pastures of champions league this year, berbatov will undoubtedly leave and we'll be "fucked" (or dilapidated or ruined or simply in more trouble than we are now or whatever), in the sense that another player of similar ability will hestitate to risk a few years of his career to come to come to a project. bottom line: we have to attract established players too, not just promising youngs ones.
what does this have to do with ledley king, you say? .....i forgot.

you're right though:
