Tottenham Hotspur Hit List: Freddy Adu

Young, gifted and black.

I won't pad this out with text from wikipedia that doesn't really inform, suffice it to say this chap's name has been mentioned and thanks to daytripper for the link details!

3 goals with his left :) the 1st 1 was something special, any idea of the fee thats being thrown around?

Anonymous said...

Sign him. Might as well, its win win and good publicity and he just might be Pele. We spend money everywhere else so whats a few thousand for Adu. Im sure his value would increase after EPL exposure. I like Mido, yes I said it, he is a great striker and I would love to leave the door open by sending him and his Boyfriend to the Blues for a year in Sparkbrook

Anonymous said...

Forget about Adu, I want the Right Winger who set up his goals !!

Out in the States this guy is massive but i feel its much "adu" about nothing ! Excuse the pun !

Anonymous said...

Very tasty The left foot goal from the right as excellent and his link up pay with his team mates is first class love that through ball think he would fit as a spurs player very well

Anonymous said...

I have to say i know these youtube compilations could make my gran look like pele that first goal of Adu's was real quality and he took his second very comfortably! For £1m he could be a steal!

Anonymous said...

Not bad from Adu but haven't both Man Utd and Chelski had a look at him? - I like the look of that Zizzo (USA number 15) - only 20 - joint USA and Italian citizenship too.

Anonymous said...

me thinks we should sign, quality goals by adu.

Anonymous said...

and the point of this article?

What you going to tell us next? water is wet? birds can fly?

Harry, I like you, although you are very defensive but I like you more when you tell us stuff that no one else can.

I like it even more when you are correct.

Please stick at what you are good at and that is interesting articles, inside gossip and sometimes things that just make you smile.

Anonymous said...

Some cool finishing - the right sided player Zizzo didn't look too bad either. Was this Polish team that poor? The U-S-A chants were gettin really irritating by the end tho.

Anonymous said...

Much Adu about something! From that performance alone you can see that for his age he has great technique, pace, control and can play with both feet. He certainly knows where the goal is. I would have him and at £1m which for US teams is a lot of money ($2m), its a snip!

Anonymous said...

He's OK but can he dribble

Anonymous said...

Granted in the Fifa U20 he showed some magic, but that is very different to the challenge of the premiership. He is also not rated as highly anymore in the comedy which is the MLS league where he was once being talked about as the next "Pele". He now plays for Real Salt Lake who are bottom of their division. However the kid is still young (only 18 or 19), so at 1 million I would not spit on him, and would stick him in to develop with the likes of Taarabt, Pekhart and Dervitte. However he must then have the patience to play in the reserves instead of the first team of an MLS team, and forget the limelight of being a so called US prodigy, would he be able to handle that?

Anonymous said...

He's made little impact in the MLS. He's not strong enough to play in he Premeirship. A luxury player who is not quick enough to play up front.

Anonymous said...

does anyone know what airline are Spurs flying out on.

I like you too, shall we dance?

The point was..... (at the risk of being defensive)... let's have a look at him.

I've never seen him play and before last week I hadn't even heard of him.

Vinny''s right though, the Prem is different gravy....

Harry Hotspur said...

2.52 That is is one leading question.........

Anonymous said...

Exactly Harry.

To elaborate on my point, to be good enough for our first team NOW, he would have to be playing like Pele in the MLS league NOW. But he is not, and I'm not even sure he is a first choice 11 player at real Salt Lake and wasn't either at DC United who refused to play him the first choice that he was demanding as their manager was saying there are better players than him, says it all. Although he is still young, but like I said would have to be a real bargain, but is certainly not a player to push us to champs league this season like the Schneiders, Petrovs or SWPs of this world.

Anonymous said...

are the yids spending a bit out of control. after spending 30 mil on players. they want buy SWP Kevin prince botang and petrov. if we don't get into Champion league that we don't go the same way of leeds.

Peong said...

Living in DC I saw him play with DC United for his first 3 years in MLS, and while there were flashes of brilliance (a few) he just doesn't impact the game. His move to salt lake has done nothing to improve his skills or his ability to play with the grown ups. He just turned 18 last month so maybe he will continue to improve, but he hasn't been worth all the hype. And his attitude tends to suggest that he thinks he's as good as the hype. Generally I think he would get buried in the Premiership. There is no way way he is up to the physicality of the game, and I don't think there is any way MLS (the league owns player rights here)would let him go for $2 mil.

Anonymous said...

The merchandising alone could be worth millions...even if he is not a success on the pitch. Building a fan base in the US could be worth a fortune to the club longer term. I couldn't agree more with the posts about signing the right winger setting up the goals for Adu against Poland. Forget SWP for 12 million...he cuold be had for $200,000.

Anonymous said...

NO! No! nO! and another no.
Im an American who is an avid follower of both the EPL and the MLS. And I can say without a shadow of a doubt that Adu is certainly not ready to play abroad. If Spurs should be looking at anyone of that US squad they should be looking at Altidore and Sal Zizzo. Adu peaked at age 15 and he does NOTHING for his team in the MLS. I know the MLS like the back of my hand and I can firmly say that Adu was used as a publicity strategy to boost the league's popularity. I would love to see Zizzo and Altidore at Spurs. Both are quality and would fit in well with Spur's style of play. Forget Adu, FOREVER. Dont be the kind of fan who watches his fanciful moves and passes it off as premier league quality. Send him to spain or italy if he is destined to go abroad, but in England he would be totally outclassed both physically and tactically.

Anonymous said...

I'd sign both Adu and Zisso!

Seriously, I think Adu would benefit enormously from playing in the EPL, even on a reserve team. His left foot is solid. Adu is small, but he's fast. He can play anywhere in the midfield. Considering the amounts being tossed around for other players with questionable skills, $2 million looks cheap to me. How's this for a midfield?

Lennon/SWP - Tarrabat/Jenas - Zokora/Huddlestone - Adu/Steed

Not bad at all!

Summerspur said...

This is all just getting crazy!!!!

So we want SWP, Pederson, the fruitcake formerly known as Prince, Adu probably do do, Petrov, Bollockov, Peezov and Suckov.

PLEEEEEASE lets just take stock. we have a decent squad and continually adding to it would just unsettle the youngsters we are supposed to be developing.lets not forget the tragic sacrifice of super kid Andy Turner just to accommodate world superstar Ruel Fox.
we do not want a revolving door policy.
I must admit its a big step up with the names being mentioned and the current squad from the days of not being able to contain my excitement in the era of signing a
Acimovic, b
Buncevevic, Perry, Scales etc.
this lad from the bible belt looks ok but there must be some young lad out there from Harringey maybe who we should also be looking to source. Sure, we all know that we need a midfield enforcer, but then we allways have done since
Roberts.

And, hey, do we have some moany fans or what!i think if we ever win prem league trophy there will people on here not dissimilar to Douglas Adams manic robot Marvin moaning that it clashed with the varnish on the cabinet or the wallpaper.
A question for you harry, do you think it possible that maybe Joe Lewis has given the board a hefty sum, but on the quiet so as other clubs with the exception of charlton, do not over inflate transfer fees?

Anonymous said...

Spot on again. American radio reporting Spurs close to finalizing deal with Adu.

Anonymous said...

l heard on talksport from ian wright that his son wants to come to us and that is a done deal where does leave our lennon

Anonymous said...

Adu may well do nothing in his MLS team but then, are the players supporting him any good? My guess is probably not having seen in that clip what he is capable of. Some decent Premiership training and team mates could do him the world of good.

That said, don't really think we need him at Tottenham.. we already have a team with unbelievable scoring ability. Now we need to stock up on players who do the rest of the work.

Chicago Spur -

Any USA sites you might suggest I might nip onto that might have some info on the Adu deal??

Cheers.

5.55-

He played for and won a championship with DC over 3 seasons, in what has consistently been the best club in MLS. (stop laughing) He received good service there, but was just outmatched more often than not. Don't get me wrong, if he's leaving MLS, which he has always said he wants to do, then Spurs would be great for him. And who knows, given the right atmosphere and a chance to deflate his head a bit he might live up to the promise he has on occasion shown. Then BMJ would look like an even bigger genius...

Anonymous said...

Bobby Convey anyone? Lucky escape methinks. The fact that Beckham is retiring to the American League rather than taking up the chance in the Premiership should tell you volumes!
Let's not be drawn into the debate just because he has the novelty of most footballers, whoops, soccer players - a left foot!!
SWP/Lennon right and Taarabt/Someone else left. Then we'll be cooking on gas with 2 from 4 up front.

COYS - I can't wait 'til the new season!!!

Anonymous said...

What makes me laugh about the Adu situation is that people were comparing him to Pele. PELE won the bloody world cup at the age of 17, picked in the first 11 of generally the greatest footballing nation in the world. Where as ADU, can't even remember him getting any time on the pitch for a dodgy USA side when he was 17 at the last world cup!

Anonymous said...

Few things:
MLS is crap.
Adu is top 5 u-20 player in the world, whether that translates to EPL success, your guess is as good as mine.. US-Brazil http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EmExheyGwKs

Bobby Convey played a very important part in Reading's 05-06 campaign and was hurt all last year, don't know about a lucky escape, we'll see..

NYCSPURS said...

I think we should buy adu if we can get him for a couple of mill. If he breaks into the 1st team then great, if not the money we make from merchandise will be astronomical. Also, I think hes good enough to play at least in some level in the premiership, so even if it didnt work with us, we could always sell him to west ham. And a good evening to you Harry.

I love you Harry, may your sons be as strong as oxes and your daughters be as beautiful as a rose in springtime

MLS is NOT crap! It might not be the EPL, but it's certainly not crap. The quality of the play is very good and getting better. The issue with the MLS is that the fan base is so small. It's hard to get into matches being played in half empty 70,000 seat stadiums. Give the MLS a few more years to develop more smaller, soccer-specific stadiums.

Anonymous said...

Just the radio sorry. WorldSoccerDaily. Reasonably reliable though in the past.

Anonymous said...

i got a text from a friend in the US that he had heard that a spurs backroom staff is in the US he thinks it is about Adu but i think that it is about SWP who do you think he is there to see

"Give the MLS a few more years to develop more smaller, soccer-specific stadiums."

Haven't they been trying to do that since the likes of when George Best, Bobby Moore, Pele and Beckenbaeur played in your country ?! Just a thought ;-)

vinny - Adu is a first team regular for Real Salt Lake (10 games started this season from 11), he also played in all of DC United's games in 2006. Is that regular enough? He has also been absent the last couple of Real Salt Lake games due to being in the FIFA U-20 World Cup. He is worth a punt for sure!!! He only just turned 18 in June, and has been playing in the MLS for 3 seasons. OK, it isn't the Premiership, but not many 18 yr olds could claim to have been playing 3 seasons in a Championship level league (which it compares to in terms of standard) - not quite your "comedy" level.

Harry Hotspur said...

11.08

Are you telling us he doesn't even do impressions?

Pah.......

Anonymous said...

i just heard from reliable person near adu that he is going to england to have a medical but i do not hnow if it is for spurs

Anonymous said...

Harry, 11.08pm here.

I was referring to vinny's earlier remark that the MLS was a comedy league by responding that it was comparable to our own Championship (ex Div 1, before that ex Div 2).

nyspursfan validates this assessment before me, in response to other negative remarks directed at the MLS.

As for Adu doing comedy, he may well be the funniest man alive, but since he can kick a ball perhaps has decided to wait until he retires from football before embarking on a stand-up career.

However whether impressions even count in the comedy realm is probably less debatable than the question of whether we should sign young Freddy.

Les Dennis? - I suggest not funny.
Alistair MacGowan? - Not funny.
Faith Brown? - No.
Bobby Davro... come on, do you detect a pattern?

I rest my case. Impressions aren't funny, or clever.

Adu hasn't lit the MLS on fire, and the MLS really is a crap league, but what makes him so interesting is that just about every MLS star, that hasn't played in Europe at one time, has fallen apart at the International level (Twellman, Johnson, Conrad are the latest duds). I've never seen another player like Adu that has done the complete opposite - he lifted his game to an entirely new level at the U20's.

The Poland game was no fluke - he was even better against Brazil and Uruguay - check out this unbelievable play that led to the game winner against Brazil (81st min - watch the dribbling closely):

never insult a dwarf with learning difficulties - it's not big and it's not clever! now that's funny !!! ;-)

12.57 - No insult intended mate, but IMO the MLS is comparable to league 1 or 2 and sometimes looks so shoddy, that I remember my home town of Woking playing better football in the conference league lol!...but then again who am I??...I suppose the point is we all generally agree the consensus is the Premiership is "slightly" more challenging and exciting than the MLS league overall, but apologies anyway as didn't intend to insult any Americans with the "comedy" remark. However Adu apparently is a great impressionist already - of Pele, he just needs to do his impressions at a higher level ie somewhere in Europe before people accept he is the genuine article.

Daytripper - I agree with you mate, as i said, for a reasonable little price ie 1 or 2 million max!,he would be worth a shot at sticking him in with our other young up n comers like Pekhaart, Dervitte and Taraabt, although the latter may even be ahead of him at the age of 17 years old. The merchandising aspect is good for the club too, afterall good business leads to more money to invest in the team and more recognition for Spurs internationally. Adu would need to be patient to get his chance though in a great squad like ours, can he handle that?

Dannyboy - lol!

P.S. Beckham should have done another 2 years in the prem before "retiring" in the MLS. He's still a decent player and whoever would have given him a chance would have reaped the rewards in mega merchandising money alone.

Over n out...COYS!

ok, i doubt anybody from the club actually reads this, but i hope BMJ goes home 2nite alittle bored and reads this. I lived in the states for 2 years as had to go there for surgery on my knee injury, and stayed there during recovery etc and was schooled for awhile out there. I have seen this boy play, and people saying he didnt light the MLS on fire are crazy when the lad was playing at the age of 14 in it agaisnt real men. His footwork is second to none, for first touch he would give Berbatov a run for his moneyh and he has the ability to use both feet better than i could use 10 feet. He can solve those midfield problems, and maybe we should follow our policy in buying young talent and snap him up, he will pick us, why would he go and rot at Man USA and Chel$ki when i would sign him pick him parade him round london, hell iwould marry him if he needed a work permit, and im not gay. 4 word will some this up, SIGN FREDDY ADU NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

After having been to many a DC united game, I've seen how Adu has been played out of position for most of his career in MLS. There is also the fact that the passing is atrocious and the average player level is farely low in the league. if you put someone that has talent into a team like that it's hard for them to really shine if they aren't getting the service and can't link up w/ teammates. I don't think adu could make the squad right now, he's just not physical enough. If he gets pushed around in the MLS imagine how tough it would be in the prem. i think he will be a very good player down the road... but the two players that i think are more ready are altidore and zizzo. both are very advanced for their ages and have shown more promise as of late than freddy.

Robert Green said...

adu, don't know. he's so brilliant so times and so frustrating others. i think in taarabt we already have our adu and don't need another.

as an american footie fan, though, this:

bradley will star in the prem as a central midfielder. he's brilliant. tough tackler, smart as hell, and shows up great in the box. he's also 6" 1'.

altidore will star in the prem. he's fast strong talented and a great finisher. he's 90% there already and with that last 10 will be absolutely world class.

Zizzo, whom i've seen play for UCLA a few times as well as in the U-20s is phenomenal. an unbelievably good tackler (as seen in the poland game but also in the brazil game even more) whose skills as a dribbler are already world class. he's just astounding at times. he will be a superstar, and he's got no work permit issues.

seitz will be a star keeper in the prem.

anthony wallace (the center back who makes the great pass to szetela for the third goal) is superb. wins balls in the air and great distribution. reminds me in every way of ledley king and will be a star. in the prem.

szetela it's hard to tell yet but he can finish and has an incredible workrate. he's done ok in the MLS but hasn't really stepped up yet.

robbie rogers, dribbler, finisher, excellent crosser of the ball. will star in the prem.

there has never been a better time to be an american footie fan. not by a mile. i'm not prone to hyperbole despite the above but the kids are alright

having said that, i hope no one else is brought in buy spurs. i believe in the kids we have and see no reason to retard their progress, with the possible exception of petrov.

Anonymous said...

vinny - no offence taken... I'm not American either!!! We just differ in our opinion of what kind of standard of football the MLS is up to, and perhaps the value (or not) of signing a player like him.

Cardiff Yid said...

he looks like an ok prospect but do we need to be signing anymore up and comers (assuming Boateng and Rose join Taarabt)?

Obviously, a talented youth team is great to have but could we get to the stage where we have too much competition for places?? I don't want to see our genuine prospects leave because we keep signing every youngster that get's a mention on some local radio station?!?

Anonymous said...

WOW, you guys have just improved every manager and scouts carbon foot print.

All they need to do is watch you tube and sign anyone who scores a goal.

One of the posts above says forget about Adu, I want the right winger who set up his goals!!!

These are the same idiots who scream it was not offside when it clearly was.

Anonymous said...

Apparently MLS wants $7.5 million (3.75 mil pounds) for Adu and is not moving. Spurs said no thanks.
