Tottenham Hotspur's Berbatov: Interview Aftermath

Before running this morning's piece a pal of mine rather prophetically was heard to say, " They'll hang you for it..... it doesn't say he's signing up for life..."

By and large, he was right.
The subtlety of Berba's answers passed many by.

And then there were those who simply abandoned reason upon him acknowledging Ronaldo & Co have 'got it going on'. Which they have. I put Ronaldo in my Fantasy Football team far too late and it cost me dearly. I'm not planning to support them as a consequence anytime soon - either.

The bottom line is that we as fans need to toughen up. Have the strength of character to say it's fine that a player as intelligent as Dimitar can talk freely about football. And not whine like babies when what we
want to read isn't put in front of us.

Do you really think that half a dozen verses of
"Dimitar Berbvatov" per game are sufficient to retain his services alone? If Spurs fans want to watch this boy on a long term basis, then it's not down to the player to start spouting some 'my heart belongs to Tottenham' garbage ...

It's the responsibility of Mr Levy and Mr Jol to make his departure unthinkable. Welcome to the 21st Century boys... that means a financial package that equates to the real world. Unfortunately that means a hundred grand a week by today's standards.

The point of running this interview was singular. To allay fears that the Sun had caused with the 'SAHA PLUS CASH BUNDLE PACK DEAL' rubbish of last month.

What was amusing, is that many actually proffered an older interview on the Standart site interview dated the 17.05.07 which PRECEEDED the Sun's headline.

It contained chummy little pro Tottenham quotes and moreover nothing chummy about the big evil nasties lurking to steal him away at Old Trafford.

Bizarre. I like my news hot of the press, not obscured by cold chips..

So the bottom line is that he's on his way to Man U if the offer is right - i.e. if Spurs get £40 mill. The fact is we are the best of the rest & nowhere near top 4 unless we get a world class defence (only Dawson is near this), a world class creative left winger/midfielder and a world class holding midfielder. BYE, BYE Berba!

Chivers - Yes.

If the club don't make it sweet for him he's off at some point. And it's not just money.

He wants service.

Defoe is commended by BMJ for tolerating the bench and Berba is looking at him saying to himself, 'fine for you'...

Berbatov repeatedly makes mention of scoring goals.
Because
a) he loves to do so
b) they guarantee he remains in charge of his career.

Anyone who thinks he'll remain at Spurs with shoddy service or apprentice money must be bonkers and I urge them to mail me cash on a regular basis, Harry'll look after it for you.

I think some are missing the point. He is just saying what we all know. It does not mean he is on the phone to Man U just that he appreciates the players
We need to get into the top 4 to attract and keep player like him.
And yes the board have to dip into the coffers and make him an offer to keep him.
We are still building but the foundations are good and so the walls will soon be solid too.
Berba will stay at least one more season so lets just hope we do enough to make him want to stay after that.

well said, Mike.
if we break into the top 4 then we'll be a team that other players admire and want to join, which hopefully means that there'll be no reason for Berbs to leave...we'll just have 2 wait and see.

None of this should be any surprise to Spurs fans what with the teddy saga, sol-gate and klinsman's prodigal son moment. Nothing's changed. Some great players love the idea of helping Tottenham Hotspur back to the top, but due to their pressing, ambitious, professional needs, will only stay so long. It's only natural, and Harry's bang on when he say's it's up to Levy and all the rest to make him want to stay. If we can't match his ambition, why would he want to stay longer than a couple of seasons? He's Champions league quality of the highest order and we should be thankful and impressed that Levy and Jol managed to get him here prior to achieving a champions league place. I still think they're doing an amazing job. It's thanks to them that we're even having this conversation.

One thing I'm convinced about is that Berbs will be here next season. Levy, Jol, a couple of players & Berbs agent have said enough to make it conclusive as far as I'm concerned. All the rest is really about what may happen at the end of next season, and I'm too busy enjoying my anticipation of the begining of it, to care about that just yet.

4th place is the target. Here's hoping we get the players to make it happen.

Go on the Spurs!

Dudes, chill. Berbs is entitled to do whatever he wants to do. I'm a yiddo too but hey, it's cool man. Berba is a gentleman. When he says he loves the club and he wants to stay then that is exactly what he want to do. Remember Henry, he said he wanted to stay, a couple of years ago and he did. Now he wants to go to Barca, and guaranteed, he will!

Anonymous said...

It would seem to me that he is just allowing United to know that he is interested, not that he is leaving as his comments with regard to ourselves are hardly stinging are they. It could be to line his pockets too, the mere suggestion of leaving ought to be enough to stop messing around and give him some wedge.

Wake up Harry, that was a call for United to get serious and start bidding.

And Bent is not going to sign so im beginning to disregard this site more and more recently

This is great. What a pack of assholes!
The man speaks now, but this is only to be applied next season... The interview was given... to allay fears...
Give him money and he'll stay...

HOW MANY TIMES DO WE HAVE TO SAY:

-no matter how much he's given he's not be signing anything else with Spurs.
-he will only stay if he cannot go.

And Harry, are you a medium or did you talk to him to know why he gave the interview? The part you posted is not one third of the total interview and he gave the interview to make clear he's willing to move, but Manchester have to move quickly.Everybody on this earth understood what he meant, he's like the girl telling the boy: "come and get me if you dare."
Why is it that only some ( few) Spurs fans insist on manipulating the thing? Just ask the Board or the Management what they got from this in face of what they already heard 3 times : no, I'm not interested in signing a new contract with you.

And still no thanks to those who gave you, and still give you, all the info, hein, harry?

Anonymous said...

Spurs are going for Bent and Bosingwa offering half the price their Clubs want. Do you call this a Club full of money? Let's get serious. Sell Berbatov and buy the others with the cash. End of story!

Anonymous said...

Well, can someone then post the whole interview so we can all have a full informed discussion?

Anonymous said...

So much ado about the obvious. It was always going to be a two year window. A player of Berba's talent needs to play with players of a similar ability, and more importantly, of a similar football intelligence. Qualify for CL and sign a few more quality players and all's good. How many times near the end of the year did we see a frustrated Berba gesticulating to his teammates as to what they should have done. Now's the time to sign quality. Tevez or Zigic would be great up front to work with Berbatov. I love the idea of Tevez as he could sit back behind Berba and Keano, and his service can be spectacular. Sign the right players, qualify for CL and pay him what he's worth and he won't be going anywhere. This team is a mere couple of pieces away from challenging for it all. Let's do it as failure next year will surely mean another 10 years of middle table meanderings and he'll be playing elsewhere. But then so will Lennon and Dawson and Robinson and Keane and, and, and. Been there, done that. COYS -

Anonymous said...

As stated to keep Berbatov we MUST get into the champions league next season. To do that we MUST get a quality defence and improve our midfield. Our attack is fine if we replace MIDO with Bent. COYS

This is all slightly reminiscent of the Cashick thing last summer... he was playing well for us, then the beloved red tops started reporting that Man USA were after him, and the other papers followed suit, speculation was rife at the start of the summer, it died down for a while until Cashick did sign for them...

I will of course run anything I find trawling the web that is of interest to Yids everywhere.

Sources? There really is no wizard of Oz, just Harry looking for more than he's been given...

You however want it both ways, don't you, sunbeam. I can't tell you how to interpret the interview, but it seems you don't hesitate in telling us just that!

You have drive, but do you have any passion? Who do you support? Would you like to e-mail in a piece on your team in Bulgaria and Bulgarian football in general, Berbatov etc or whatever? I'd run it if it was a good read...

To be fair it seems we may be reading too much into this. If you look at the structure of the interview Berba was continually probed about links to Man Utd, to which his response would always necessarily be flattering - he isn't going to turn around and say they are shit is he? Perhaps we can read into the fact he mentions he would suit their attacking style of football - fair enough - but this could be easily sensationalised as a 'come get me' or simply read in the context of the article which was practicaly begging Berba to disclose a connection. In honesty we know he is world class, and will be tempted by CL football - inevitably if we fail to provide it. But lets not panic. In an interview that seems intent on pushing him into admission, whilst graceful and positive in his answers re Man Utd, he repeatedly stresses that he is a Spurs player and is happy with us.

Yes, there is no doubt a possibility he will go next summer, even if we deliver CL. But realistically even Utd cannot afford to doll out another hefty transfer fee this summer, with their budget defecit after Hargreaves, Nani, and Anderson, not even to mention the 18 million we got for Carra last season. Berba will cost alot, and big MJ isn't silly enough to take Saha as a makeweight.

But to the point, we need to sobre up and not descend into either hysterical panic or a false sense of security. It would be interesting to hear more about our new contract offer to him - Levy is shrewd enough to offer him big money, it is entirely plausible that he is waiting to see our further movement in the market as a measure of our ambition. Alternatively, his reluctance to sign could be read as a symptom of temptation from yonder.

Either way if you think long and hard it remains very difficult to second guess things here - bottom line this or that. In my mind Berba will at least be in our shirt next season - as he has categorically stated - and whether or not that means he is there the season after really is a seperate matter.

To me the message seems simple, He loves the way he is treated at spurs but he would like to play against the elite of europe. I beleive he will stay for two reasons. Manure may not have 40m to spend right now, having just spent £30m, so i think they will come for him later when the price will reduce due to the reduced time on his contract, this is why i don't think he'll sign a new contract. secondly i beleive he will give spurs this year only to achieve CL football. If by the january window we are not in the top four i think he'll be off. Although iwill be gutted, i can understand his ambition. Basically the ball is n Our court, bring in quality or we lose him. The upshot of this is that he will,i'm sure be even more prolific to keep a high profile.

If Harry had posted all the abridged version you would have seen in the end ( as you can, if you check the link above) it is part of a big exclusive given to DON BALON BULGARIA, a weekly football magazine. Therefore the whole interview is in Bulgarian. If you check the comments on the previous posts you 'll confirm this as I'm trying to get someone to translate it all for you.
I mean Uncle Bulgaria and Co.

I am aware of DON BALON BULGARIA and when the rest is published I'd love to run a translation in English.

Berbatov is player, he plays for team ... and he playing for money too. If MU or Chelsea or Real or whoever offer him great money he would be stupid to reject. Also, if Tottenham is to earn some 568136574369 money for it ... that's great too.
Last year Spurs get 18M for Carick and honestly he does not worth more thann 10-11. Good deal I would say.
The only thing that would make me dissapointed is if Spurs sell Berbatov for less than lets say 35M.
Remember, every player has it's price.
Also, I would like to hear from Berbatov something like : "I will stay at Tottenham next year and if they qualify for CL I will stay more. I will leave this window only and only if Spurs agree on it and if I get huge money."
If he say that I will be assured that he will stay.

Anyway ... team is bigger than any player and Spurs will be OK EVEN (I hope not) he leaves.

It shows how boring the close season is, Harry is getting away with two identical blogs.

Anyway to be successful you need to take risks. The risk that the board needs to evaluate is what happens if we do not make Champions League next season? Will we lose Berbatov, Lennon, Bale etc and miss out on signing any decent replacement?

This needs to compared with going shit or bust and buying Bent, Pedersen,Kaboul or whoever, blowing £40 million and still end up not qualifying.

So do we take another fifth place or go for it and possibly end up playing Leeds Utd twice a season?

Pedro Yid, spot on mate. The Journo was poking at him the whole way through and all Berba did was smile politely and say what a good team they are. He's hardly going to give it the big f*ck you to any consistent CL team and potential employer in an interview. He'll be here next year and the year after that once we've knocked the arse out of 4th.

I actually thought the journalist was a bit of a prick in that interview and put him in an uncomfortable situation.

- Welcome home! How do you estimate you first season in Tottenham?
- It was a very good season. Both for me and for the team. We played a lot of matches. I still feel angry that we missed to play at the UEFA Cup final. I hope that we reach farther next year.
- England's media praise you a lot but you have not changed and are still a down-to-earth person?
- I do not think that I have to tell what I am like. Those who know me can tell you that I have not changed and that I am still the same down-to-earth man.
- The British press writes every day of other clubs showing vivid interest in you. Are you to stay in Tottenham?
- I am extremely happy in Tottenham and my contract is for another 3 years, I will stick to it. I am now having a meeting with my manager and will discuss with him my situation. I am again telling you, I am very happy in Tottenham.
- Is there an option that you leave London?
- Do not ask me such things. You'd better go and see my agent. I do not want to discuss this topic.
- You turned to be a key player for Tottenham for a season only. You've won high recognition.
- Recognition makes me happy but I am realistic and I know that next season will be harder for me, yet I am sure that I will cope with the difficulties.
- What is ahead of you apart from the qualifiers vs Belarus on June 2 and 6?
- I have to get some good rest in the next 2-3 days. This is what Tottenham managers recommended me. Then I will have to go on with my practices. Bulgaria must win the qualifiers vs Belarus and not only them. We have no other choice.
- But can Bulgaria beat Belarus?
- I am optimistic and I am sure that we shall win the qualifiers. If we fail to win the matches we will not deserve to play at EURO 2008 finals.
- A young player from Levski went on tests to Tottenham. I think the interest of English clubs in Bulgarian footballers has increased with your help?
- Bulgaria has young talented footballers like Levski player Nasko Kurdov. Only someone has to spot them.
- Will you continue to wear the You Are Not Alone ribbon in support of the Bulgarian nurses?
- If I can do something to help, I am ready to immediately do it. My wish is that through me more people worldwide learn about this unjust trial.

Everybody just chill!! Berbs has already categorically stated several times he is happy at Spurs and going nowhere so just leave it at that. I too have read the whole interview and I must say that that journo was just a sensationalist prick trying to worm a definite answer out of Berbs who seemed more intent on talking about Bulgaria's Euro qualifiers and being at Spurs - just because he says he likes United's style on constant probing doesn't mean he will jump ship right away. I'm Spurs through and through but I like United's playing style, doesn't mean I'm gonna start supporting them. That journo just wanted to sell a story, end of. We will see how we finish next season, if we don't qualify for CL then the signs aren't good on Berbs staying, but who knows. What if we win the UEFA Cup next season? Will he still go? Will he stay? Who the fuck knows? Just ignore all the speculation and the papers adding two and two and coming up with fifty and just revel in the fact that Berbs himself has said that he is going nowhere for now and there is plenty of evidence from the past that he has always been an honest and loyal player. Let's look forward to next season and hopefully a few class additions in the summer. COYS!

This move has been bought about as the spurs board are unhappy with the purchasing of property around whl stadium, which they believe a certain ex chairman of the club is possibly behind.

Therefore, my fellow Spurs, I don't like what I read. To have someone like Berbatov praising a team that is not his own, is like having someone else saying: I want to go, if you want me.

Chivers how the hell is dawson a world class defender. Hes very promising with a great atitude but hes got an awful lot to learn. World class my arse.

Seriously, can we all just shut up about this. It dont matter what anyone says, if he stays he stays, if he goes he goes end of. Nothing we say or do will change that. We all said ages ago that we need a left winger, did we get one? No. We could have at the very least taken Routledge back and put him on the left. I think he's been treated badly, he got injured and then farmed out on loan.

Bolocks! Jol played Routledge on the left for a few games...he then moane that he was forced to play out of positions...loaned to portsmouth...and did not performed there, either.

Ten things I hate about Berbatov:

1. He's courting a move to Manchester Utd.

2. He's praised Man Utd players above his own squad - rightly or wrongly, you just don't do that!

3. He's realised that Man Utd weren't going to make a move for him so he's engineering a transfer by praising them!

4. He comes across as being an honourable person but it looks like his honourability will be tested by a Manchester Utd bid for him!

5. He must therefore be 2-faced.

6. Having such attitudes at a club can unsettle a dressing room and the other players.

7. He will break my heart by leaving.

8. He should show some b*lls by staying at least one more season and helping us get into the Champions League that he so craves to play in!

9. He will take an unbearable amount of abuse from our fans if he plays for Utd. (Remember Sol Campbell?)

10. He should want to give his all for Spurs, who have brought him to England and to a greater world stage after being mediocre in a cruddy German league for 5 years.

Of course dear Carol is in love with the man and he doesn't even know she exists. But that's another story.

I'm also in love with the man, he doesn't know I exist either, but I want him in Man U.

Signed: my name isn't Carol.

All bull shit aside, you cant blame the man for wanting to play at the highest level. When you get the chance to play for one of the worlds biggest clubs, [ like it or not, its true] you take it. You might never get a second chance. Im a spurs fan and i love the club but if i was in his position id have to go.

Today is the 7th June, isnt it? I do like to keep my promises:

http://international.ibox.bg/news/id_1816431706

The events:

29th May: contract pre agreement; talks with agent.

31st: Spurs Board say no, they fear the fans; only way out is for the player to execute clause.

3rd June: Berbatov declares his love for United; his agent confirms he's willing to execute the clause.

5th June: the interview explodes on the net. Sir Alex calls Berbatov. They agree.

7th June: Manchester is still trying to get the transfer in friendly terms: If Spurs refuse it will be done the hard way. They have two weeks.

Last week of June: Agent goes to Manchester to discuss personnal terms.

5th July: Medical. Berba signs.

7th July: Pre season starts for Berbatov, the new number 9 of Man U.

Now, Harry, thanks for putting the interview online. As you see, the past events check; so will the future ones.

And avoid, insults, people. I won't waste my time replying to them.

Sofea darling, fairness? Does he owe anything to Spurs? They paid him 22,000 a week! He did his job better than anyone expected, including himself (well, there was one who did actually, but never mind). So now he's worth millions. Good for Spurs they will grab millions! A foreign player doesn't have clubs, only has a career. Hope he does what he has to do now, or this might be a complete flop (he knows what I mean!).

By the way, shouldn't your name be Sofia Ivanova?
