Tottenham Hotspur: Sensational Signing

"I hope they don't expect me to wear this..."

All over bar the shouting. Thanks be to God...

£16.5, which is actually £13 plus the usual array of add-ons which are spelt out in glorious technicolour everywhere, so I shan't bore you and me further.

The inevitable question is 'Is he worth it?' and frankly no-one is going to answer that one satisfactorily until next May. My guess is that he is. In fact I'm sure he is.

He has behaved in an almost unrecognisable but welcome fashion for a Premiership footballer. Money is clearly not his god and he genuinely wanted to play for us! I couldn't be happier that he has signed. I wish there were more like him.

The shortsighted are already out in force predicting Defoe's next club as they have neither the wit nor imagination to see why or how Tottenham might require the services of more than two strikers.

I dearly hope that Defoe stays and embraces the challenges ahead.

Well done THFC. More please.

Bent is 4/1 to score more that 16 league goals next year - that has to be the most generous offer William Hill has ever made.

Anonymous said...

I really am plased that he has signed for us. ALthough 17 mil is quite a hefty sum of cash, i believe that in the long run he'll be worth it. All we need now is a tops class left winger, and cover for that left winger ;) oh yeah and Kaboul/Davies signig is also essential becase of sick-note King :O

Agree with your comments about the Bent signing and the fact that Defoe will stay to give Spurs one of the best strike forces in the Premiership.

Anonymous said...

Agree with you harry, good signing, good player and wants to player for us, he has proven that. I hope defoe stays but if he does decid eto leave, i still think bent offers more.

Dubai_Yid-i-oh said...

I completely agree. And i hope JD stays and we try the 3 pronged attack we used in nearly every friendly last pre-season. DB-DB, DB-RK, DB-JD, RK-DB, the possibilities are endless. Is there anyone else in the Premiership with a stronger strike force than us? COYS!!!

Anonymous said...

great signing. hope jol plays with berbatov and bent upfront and keane either behind or somewhere on the left. i hope there's more signings to come!!

Anonymous said...

He reminds me of Chris Armstrong. He took a paycut to join us(Everton offered a higher monthly wage) and, well.. They are similar players, right?

Anonymous said...

Well said! Sometimes it pains me to be a YID when I see all the negativity thats spouted from us guys but like you I also believe that Bent will be a great signing. We won't know until next May so lets embrace the signing and get on with getting a talented left winger.

Anonymous said...

Couldnt agree more HH. The real answer will come in May. Spurs now have 4 20+ goals a season strikers....and Mido! What other team can boast that? After playing 60 games this year i hoped we'd find a second strong combination to use at times. To be honest, they all offer something different and options are the key. Keanes flicks and link up play onto Bents pacey runs. Berbys effortless finishing and movement and Defoe's tenacity and poachers instinct. All can score belters as well. Think BMJ will need his extra strong Asprin for this selection headache. Price wise, im sure the men in charge know what they are doing. None of us know the details for sure. COYS

Anonymous said...

The fee's a bit rich but can't fault DB in all of this - especially pleasing that he so obviously really wants to play for us - and on appearences at least he should actually be effective combined with any of our other strikers. Add to that he's 23 and English then i feel we have a good player at a slight premium.

Please sign someone for the left wing!!

Anonymous said...

Right on Harry. The one to be leaving is surely Mido who is like a carthorse compared to Berbatov. While they are about it, please, please Spurs, get rid of gastly Ghali!!
Am I right, or am I right?!

Anonymous said...

I rarely comment, but I'm moved to say good work on this article, I was wondering who'd be first to note Bent's impeccable conduct throughout, and the fact that Defoe is not neccesarily directly affected by this as much as the papers say. Surely Bent seems more naturally an understudy for Dimitar rather than an upgrade from Defoe. Well thats what I think. Four decent strikers? Can you remember the last time? COYS!

Anonymous said...

Although its steep, Bent brings what Defoe can't. Jol is aware that Defoe and keane don't play well and we can't expect Berba to play every game so Bent is the perfect foil. Jol can now mix and match. Still, will Defoe stay?

Anonymous said...

well said...totally agree he will be great.

DBsKnees said...

Two strikers ? Spurs would have more than two strikers, even if Defoe left... I'm not sure what you're getting at..

I sincerely hope that Defoe stays too, however I can see his position becoming more untenable with the arrival of Bent.

I've heard rumblings that Defoe is unwilling to sign an extension and that Spurs are more than happy to move him on, if needs be.

Defoe has been a more than loyal servant to us and dealt with the other strikers such as Mido, Kanoute, Rasiak etc - throughout... his attitude has been top notch. Hopefully Jol will still give him a fair crack of the whip and continue to play the strikers on merit.

However if Defoe is wanting guaranteed first team football - then hey-ho... hopefully he'll see that Spurs are going places and if we want to challenge on multiple fronts we'll need all four strikers!

COME ON YOU SPURS!

Anonymous said...

I hope Defoe stays too as our current 4 strikers look absolutely awsome if they all stay. Definate top 4 challenge with that bunch.

However it is now up to each of them and also may depend on any offers from other vulture clubs that may want to feed on press fueled propaganda (or shit stiring)to prise one of our fantastic 4 away from the lane.

whats with some people!!! When the initial story broke - we were told that it was 17Million up front out right!! That is definitely over the top in my opinion. The vital bit of information that has swayed peoples judgements is the way the deal has been arranged..... It isnt an initial outlay of 17M.It is a percentage up front - with built in performance related payments and installments!!

We also got him for 5 years and an extra add on 1year clause so that he cant walk for free on a bosman should the situation ever come about...

That my friends is the reason that people are now seeing the deal differently. (which is fully undestandable)

On another note:- I thought that he was a good option - 23 years of age and a different type of player to what we have - i realise people are harking on about defoe - and i do rate him, but its no secret that bent offers more .... Aerial ability!!!! speed!!!! non stop running and commitment!!!! Good link up play!!!! and he can also score goals - people keep saying that he only looked good because he was the star at charlton??? how is that!!!

I remeber a certain Mr bent looking pretty good when scoring 2 past us at the end of last season ?? dont you??

Also - look at the england options -

owen' past it and nowhere near as good as he was!!!

Andy Johnson' pace and an eye for goal yes - link up play/good in the air.... NO!!

Rooney - obviously. But not good in the air.

Defoe - too 1 dimensional - great snap shot and a good turn but in my opinion - thats all he offers!!

Crouch - good in the air - good link up play. goal scorer? arguable depending on club or england form, pace? NO

Nugent - Whats the point - now he is over rated.

Alan smith - jury is out at the mo

My clear point is that Bent is probably the most all round English forward we have - He has a bit of everything and does it all well, he's a sound invesment and in the long run an england regular as well as worth the money spent

Anyway - rant over - like to see pepoles opinions on my points - challenge away

Anonymous said...

All the newspapers reckon Defoe is off. I have to agree with HH though - those who think that are short sighted. Four strikers are a must. Mido is sure to go before Defoe.

Can't wait for Kaboul to come and lefty now !

Anonymous said...

A very good (not great)signing of a natural goalscorer who will give us even more versatility up front -providing Defoe stays and he MUST stay in my opinion. Unfortunately we now have to pay inflated prices if we want the best from English football but I think, for instance, he is nowhere near worth the 11 mill. we paid for Berbatov. I think we are now 3 players away (a class midfielder to replace Davids, Pedersen and Kaboul or Davies)from being a top 3 side (i.e. we'll never catch Chelski and Manure). Get the cheque book out & buy who we need Levy! COYS.

Anonymous said...

I Suspect we will have two strike partnerships next season, Berbatov & Kean, Bent and Defoe, this is great news for Bent, Defoe, Spurs & England. If they strike up a partnership McClaren wont be able to ignore them.

Anonymous said...

good man harry... let's get behind this boy.
that he can play was never an issue. that he can score goals was never in question.
but a lot of us wondered whether he was worth the money... 16.5 is a hell of a lot.

but at 23, proven premiership marksman, strong and tall (which we badly need), it seems like a good buy.

i love defoe, and hope he stays. but not if it means BMJ thinks he has to employ some kind of 433 next year to keep every1 happy.
long story short, i reckon defoe's gone.
GO ON DARREN U BEAUTY!!!!!
SUPER TOTTENHAM, SUPER TOTTENHAM, SUPER TOTTENHAM FROM THE LANE!!!!!

Also on the official Website it says the payment is to spread over 3 years and he has signed a 6 year contract :-|!
Got to hand it to Levy and co once again. Bent and Berbartov has a nice ring to it.

Anonymous said...

Too flippin right Harold! Bent's behaviour in rejecting West Ham was quite stunning. He's good, young and English. I'm delighted. I hope Defoe does stay but if he doesn't sign a new contact this summer he must be sold. With only 2 years left on his contract he can't be allowed to let it run (as will be the case if we leave it for antoher year). Defoe with only a year left or on a free would make him a taregt for huge clubs. I hope we keep him though.

Fans of the scum are crying out for a 20 goals per season striker and at this moment we have 4 proven strikers, plus Barnard and Pekhart.

Cannot wait for the season to start and the day we are 3 nil up with 20 minutes to go and we then bring on Berby. We are going to terrorise some teams next season.

berba will go, bent was his replacement, said but more than likely true. keep our fingers crossed that he'll stay but can't see how this would make sense otherwise.

Anonymous said...

No1's complainign cos its pretty good news!!! good signing - rather than being over priced i think cheaper players (if they are quality) are bargins now.

Look at the scum - 16 for Henry - what a joke, its almost robbery.

Its just how the money is these days - look at carrick! If we signed a striker for say 8mil, which alot of people were saying bent was worth, we'd b going for some1 not even of crouches standard like adybayor!

4 top quality strikers, in my opinion now the best strike force in the prem! All we need is a star midfielder (tho taraabt sounds like he could develop into god, tho thats maybe a while off)and of course a lefty... personally i like the look of drente who would be cheap compared to pedars...

Very excited bout this season

Well its happened can't say im over enthused by bent being our record signing and hope this isn't the end for defoe a player which should stick by as it was not to long ago defoe was a player we wouldn't even think about selling so show some loyalty spurs and i think they will we would only have to buy yet another striker as mido is long gone and we need four strikers to be able to compete at the level we want too.As every player deserves a chance i will do so with bent its just the fact he is our record signing that grates me,why not spend that money on a quality left sided player/playmaker unless at last we are going to see how big levy's pockets are anyway bored shitless with no footy but only 7 weeks left coys........

Well there are some real idiots on here, Bent is obviously overpriced and a bad buy!!

Yeah, you're right.
Harry, this is news from the horse's mouth. I just heard it and couldn't believe it, but it was from one of the top top big fishes at WHL. Berba is going. The deal is done. That's why they paid so much for Bent and the deal was not to be disclosed because of the payment Spurs wanted in installments. The big boss also assured me this will be "known" today. Defoe is staying and he's moving up the ladder. Bent will be our new number nine. I 'm going to get pissed to forget.

Overpriced even though we're way behind the 'top 4' and just been given £40m for Premiership tv rights alone? If Mr Levy spends £17m on Bent and we get to the Champions League without him playing a single game do you think I'll care?

F**k no! it's got nothing to do with money anymore.. it's all about finishing postitions and silverware.

It is a good signing because it gives us a proper option if Berbatov is unavailable either temporary or permanent. I want to think that this is the Board really going for it rather than just spending the Berbatov fee in advance. Whatever though we are still need central defensive signings.

its funny how a lot of so called yids appear to say how they,ve heard that mitko is leaving, well my friends who ever you maybe, if you are so sure of this i challenge you to this, i have a paypal account with my bookie site that allows person to person bets, ill happily take a bet from you, any bet that he will not be leaving the lane.please let me know as im sure i could do with a few extra quid for holidays after which ill return to watch are superb strikeforsce taking the prem by storm

Agree - Bent is good signing but not worth the money we paid for him tho he does seem committed to Spurs.Defoe should definitely stay - he's quality & we need him for a 60 match season.
The intriguing question now is who else does MJ plan to bring in - Kaboul sounds likely or does he plan to make do with most of the current squad? e.g.the left wing position could be filled by either Keane, Tarrabt or Bale. Also Who does he plan to sell - if you look at the list that some regulary trot out -Ziegler,Ghally,Mido, Murphy,Gardener, Lee, Stalteri,Routledge even Tainio -I for one don't see most of these players leaving in the next 2 months -3 or 4 maybe. The official site even had an article on TG looking forward to the uefa cup next season...in short I expect MJ to shuffle the pack as much as buy in.

Anonymous said...

I do think his fee was alot of money but we haven't been let down yet by any of the recent signings and he is a proven young premiership striker!! He scored the same amount of premiership goals as Rooney last season and yet there's all these idiots saying what a waste of money. I'm confident he'll show everyone what a good buy he was come the end of the season!!! COYS

If we sell Berbi to Man U im going to wait for Daniel Levy at his home address and kill the c**t, very simple how that works!!!!
Ok if i dont kill him i will rip my season ticket up.

How the hell could we even think of selling this man i mean he is without doubt going to be the best striker in the prem this year, if we paid Davids £60k a week why the f**k dont we give Berbi £60-80k a week???????

As for Bent its an excellent signing and if we keep "Defoe he's a yido" then them two could link up a deadly partnership.

Fingers X'd we keep all 4 of them.

If we sell Berbi every single spurs fan should protest and not attend any of our friendly matches!!!! that will get the message across

Anonymous said...

Bent is proven premiership quality. But most spurs fans I know have question why so much money is being invested in another forward. The important thing is the rumours are at an end now and we should show Bent all the support he deserves. I also believe Defoe will stay as he is incredibly determined to prove himself with us. Would be nice to bad left winga nxt!

Anonymous said...

Bent is too expensive !!! But apparently we're paying him £30,000 less per week than the Spammers were offering.By my reckoning that's a gain of a grand and a half p.a.
....looks like we win on the swings?

Well lads its done, thank f##k!For all you whiners banging on about tooo much moolah for Bent here are some thoughts....if you equate it to what todays market would have fetched for Rebrov in the form he showed before Spurs he would have cost 30 million....Carrick sold for 18 mill will have to fight tooth and nail for a starters job with the signings ManUsa made.
Would you rather sign Cisse or some other expensive foriener unproven in the Prem? When Spurs signed Berba he was really second choice for us after Kyut!Lets face it after 5-6 games with Spurs a few had their doubts about him.He came good and it turns out that he was better for us than a great train robbery @10.9 mill....you couldnt touch him now for 25 large today.
DB has signed for 5 years at which time he will still be only 27 or 28 and he has scored wherever he played. He is Prem proven and is the best home grown available so that price to me is a deal and i for one am confident that if you get behind him and not prejudge anything he to will become another fan favorite sticking em in for fun!17 mill over 3 years is the max you can pay if he reaches all targets that were agreed, and if he does guess what fellow yids....your in Champions Lge heaven watching the goons drag their collective arses behind em.
THERE IS NO WHINING ALLOWED AT WHL....we can afford what we buy so get behind your team and be glad that we can get decent players when they are on offer esp when they WANT to play for you!

peace out.

it's so funny this ranting of "if we sell".
you don't have to sell He just has to buy himself out.
Levy and Comolli are not to blame, if he goes it is his option, get it?

And yes, the bets are on, it's the talk of the weekend. Will Berba go? Will Defoe go? Or what?
Tell us something, Sofea Jane, you big boy's agent's girlfriend.

Strange signing but at least it grates those stinking goons (they sell their best player and we sign a potential bench warmer for the same fee - HA HA)...

Surely what is most important is

1) A leader on the pitch particularly in centre-mid, a more experienced player to show Jenas how to play (I think we should look at Porto captain Lucho Gonzalez as a more attacking threat and perhaps Kevin Nolan to give Zok a rest now and again)

2) A bloody left winger. I mean for F***s sake, just do it! Petrov, Malouda, Robben or anyone with a decent left peg and a bit of pace (think Pedersen is way overrated)

3) A real 2nd keeper to keep Robbo properly on his toes, somebody with more experience who can help him with his composure. Most top teams have keepers over 30 for a reason - as we got plenty of glimpses of last season!

Sort this out and we have the makings of a premiership winning team...

COYS!

If we can afford that kind of money then why not?

reading press reports today, apparentley the actual fee is £15 mil rising to £16.5 depending on performance (both team and player). this is to be paid £5mil at a time over 3 years. sodding great business if you ask me. potentially the best quartet of strikers in the prem. he has been bought as a replacement for mido NOT defoe, you numpty defoe haters.

any concerns about the exploitation of Berbatov (with 22,0000 a week he could do the washing for all the other top football players to get some tips)who actually is this day 26 years and 5 months old and who signed last year a four year contract, which would leave him getting kicked out of Spurs when he's 29 and a half! I cant honestly believe some of you think Berba will be leaving now we have Bent?! We have all gone over the "he said he's staying/but Utd offering silly money" scenario.. but lets look at this.. Berba comes in, 1st season, makes a what can only be described as a "phenominal" impact on Spurs and the premiership as a whole. There havent been too many instances where a foreign player comes in and 1st season does what he done.. there has been alot of talk about him staying one more season to see how we get on, push for champ lge etc.. which i think, given the quality of the man, we can all say is pretty reasonable.. which world class player doesnt want to be playing in the worlds most prestigious club competition..?!? so next season finishes.. Spurs finish 4th (or higher?!?!), Berbas a happy man as we in champ lge, and us fans are wetting ourselves in anticipation of putting Barca and co to the sword.. other alternative.. god forbid, we dont get champ lge.. do you really think that Utd or whoever will all-of-a sudden have decided they are no longer interested in our man... hell no?!? any top team will wait as long as it takes to get the player they really want... just look at Utd and the Ruuuuuud situation.. injures his knee, utd have to wait a year, get their player and the rests history.. this is however just my humble opinion, i believe Berba will be here come start of the season, he would be silly not to be, based on what we have invested so far this close season. Are Spurs better than Umited? And I mean now? With Bent and the rest? Are they? So, why would a player wanted by United want to be with Spurs? Unless he's screwing the owner's daughter!!!Fucking good logics!

On the other end, you're rught: Berbatov did have ONE exceptional year. Nothing like this EVER occurred in his life. So what makes people think he'll be that good next season, specially if he stays put? Without challenges he'll revert to his old self, like he was in Germany. Believe me.It's better for everybody that he moves.

By the way, any serious news from WHL, harry? Not gossip, just the real thing, please.

I think it is clear that we have paid over the odds for Bent. But I read somwhere that, before this transfer window, we have spent a NET £16m since Jol arrived as number two coach. We were mid table no-hopers with a very old squad. For £16m (if that's right?) or even £30/40m (if its not), then you have to say it is bloody good business to get us from mid-table tossers to the brink of champions league and silverware within three years. The extra step WILL cost more - but we now have a squad that, including Bent, has massive re-sale value and will get better itself over the next few years even without any additions. TV money has gone up, Europe brings more tv and vastly increased gate reciepts blah blah blah. The key is we are bursting with cash and Jol and Levy are not finished. Let us not forget that we spent 15 years in the wilderness being subjected to tripe. Today we are paing over the odds but in the context of the last 3 years we have to take our hats of to the management of the Club. The future's bright, the future's lilywhite...

Anonymous said...

Darren Bent - £17m BMJ must have gone back to the dam and had some mad skunk. He must be tripping to think we need to spend this amount on another striker - would have preferred we went for Torres or more important a quality left midfielder ( Malouda , Ben Arfa or Drenthe ).
My main complaint is we need to be more confident against the big teams and play to win not for a draw at best.
A younger world class player with a winning mentality like Edgar Davids should be enough to make us top three club.
BMJ you better recognise because you will be judged on this season , though i do feel apart from some moody tactics under pressure you are a good manager.

The milion dollar question is:
what on earth have Spurs promised Bent that made him flush 30,ooo pounds a week down the toilet?

(He's geting 45,000, but West Ham promised 75,000!)

berbatov wont leave he sayed he wont!

bent? im unsure about him, he could be good but i can also see him being a a waist of money.

i think that defoe will be next to go because he dosent want to sign a new contract soe hes going to do a sol campbell.

Anonymous said...

it's obvious. bent isn't interested in the cash - he's interested in success and cementing a regular england place. west ham are a pile of wank who'll achieve fuck all bent knows that

Anonymous said...

It is crazy money at the end of the day, but as someone else said, that is the going rate today for a proven prem player. Example - Fulham just signed Diomansy Kamara for 6.5 million plus a player!. Youre talking a 7 or 8 milllion deal there for a championship player!

Now, there could be 2 viable reasons why we have bought Bent;

Reason 1) The club is finally thinking like a champions league club, for which many of us supporters are not used too, so have also become affiliated with this attitude of saving money. There is a happy median, obviously Chelski are the other silly extreme. But there is nothing wrong with the club strengthening with quality players only, as that is Champions League team behaviour, let's get used to it.
Reason 2) The horrible Scenario that the club know something we don't about berba, or even are covering their backs in case, like an insurance.

Lets hope the latter reason for buying Bent is not true and embrace reason number 1, and an end to buying old has been crock players rejected from Liverpool etc, and end to be a laughing stock for at least 15 painful years!

COME OOOOOOON YOOOOOU SPUUUUURS!!!

I bet you're as sure about Berba's staying as you are about your spelling: SAYED, yes, I bet Berbatov SAYED, but I wont bet he's staying!
(Just remembered today he ends his first year of contract with Spurs. According to UEFA rules, transfers are only allowed after one year, even with buy out clauses. Coincidence? I wouldn't bet!)
