Tottenham Hotspur: Benty On Board

Well it looks as if the Bent transfer is about to be rubber stamped. At long last.

As suggested on HH back on 31.05.07, the fee looks likely to be considerably less than the inflated price tag Charlton execs originally dreamt up. I suggested £12.5 and the figure being bandied around today is £13 plus all the usual add-ons for appearances etc...

To Bent's credit he chose Club over cash.

The wheels on their homes may well go round and round, but West Ham were serious ~ by all reports offering young Darren £75,000 a week. What Tottenham have offered him is anyone's guess but it is highly unlikely to more than half that.

Of course, this will truly unleash speculation over the Spurs strikers. More fuel to rubbish 'Defoe To ______' (insert club)... and more 'Berbatov Agent In Secret Underwater Talks With Man Utd' guff.

The quantity of strikers doesn't really rattle me in terms of losing any of our current mob. If BMJ could get away with keeping 5 decent strikers happy he damn well would. They all know the drill. You impress - you play- you score - you play - you stay...

I'm confident Defoe will remain and will show real ambition, real resilience and will finally crack (hopefully) a few more of his critics. This will be a make or break season for him at The Lane.
No one, no one, no one at all wants to discuss the possibility of...... injuries...

We have one hell of a campaign staring us head on and I tell you now, if Berba gets a twist in the 23rd minute against Gutentag Zurich or whoever on a wet Tuesday night and we've Man Utd away on the Saturday Benty will look cheap as chips and Defoe will be an ace in the hole.
There are too many games ahead to be clucking at this stage about being 'overmanned'.

I don't think Defoe will stay, which is no doubt behind the decision to pay over the odds for Bent (even at a base £13m). He has one year left, and won't extend his contract in the present scenario... that means we'll get about £10m for him now, or he walks for nothing next year.

Bent, whilst probably not being any better as a footballer, will be able to play with either Keane or Berbie, and so represents a better option anyway.

I don't care who we sign this summer now. nothing will make me as happy as i was when i read henry was packing his bags-and have you read his open letter? What a wa***r!!!

We're going places and its the beginning of the end for the scum....

Agree with much of what you say. The killer question is how can you keep three or four top strikers match sharp. The evidence of last season tells me that playing a good run of games makes all the difference

you're right. ppl forget that top teams have at least four top strikers. once we shift the egyptian and the bent deal goes through we'll have the best strikeforce in the premiership as a whole I would say. That gives us one season, and only one, to get into the champs league before the likes of berba move on to pastures green. we can do it though and i think bent will be a big part of it! COYS!! (p.s anyone else gutted to see arsenal lose their best player??!!!!!!!!!)

Morning H

Thanks for the feedback and as usual your spot on. Personally, the signing is excellent news and clearly shows yet again the vision of BMJ and the Board. Whether JD stays or not (I would love for him to stay and create a strike partnership with Benty) only time will tell but D Bent clearly brings a lot more to the table than JD who is a real goal mouth expert but does not have as much vision, passing and other gola scoring abilities as JD. The Times compares Benty's stats vs Crouch, A johnson at Everton and bent is well ahead. Its a great signing that we will not regeret. Been reading your site for ages HH keep up the good work!!COYS!!

Berbatov will only leave if we cant offer him CL football next year, i live in Germany and have seen him playing for while now. He is a man of honour and refused to celebrate in front of his old club when scoring in the uefa cup. If the quotes are true that he has said he wants to win things with tottenham and that he loves the fans he will stay after next year as long as we have CL football, thats my opinion anyway. Bent will give us a good security net if we dont get CL next year and Berbatov did leave, but i do feel we paid over the odds for him.

Fabregas has already been quoted last month as saying he would want out if Henry were to leave, i love it Rats leaving a sinking ship. Will the last quality player leaving the Library please turn off the lights

COYS!!!!

TBH hh got it all wrong again.
Price = £15-16million + bonus - Wage = £50,000 p/w - Bent is a load of shit, no better then Defoe, yet we buy him at twice the price almost, than we will sell defoe for.

My name's Andy, I support Spurs and I live in Italy. The Italian media are reporting the Christian Vieri has agreed a 1-year deal with Tottenham, with an option for a second year.
You could have knocked me down with a feather when I heard it on the news yesterday and again this morning(not a dodgy website, on the news on a national tv channel) ... I quickly took a look at the official site and then newsnow on the web, and nothing. The Italians are reporting it as fact though. Very strange ... personally I think it would be a step back, he's old and injury-prone, and probably looking for one last payday....but it's wierd that there's nothing about it on the UK news, and here they're saying it's official.....

This blog was bad enough before but now the owner (whoever she is today) moderates who is slagging him/her off today, what kind of blog is it that onlt allows posts that is buttering the site editor up....Harriet you are an idiot!!

Bent obviously wants to play for spurs above money.
He will be mido's replacement for a season to allow him to intergrate properly.
Berbs will go if we do not qualify for champs league and if we do defoe will go with one year left onb his conrtact.
Spurs will not allow another big player to leave for nothing.
A shrewd bit of business indeed...
COYS top 3 and a cup please. Ta

CyprusYid says..."I agree with you Harry, concerning JD. I always said that if we agree to sell him, whom so ever buys him, he will return to the Lane to punish us for letting him go. He is a star quality player, that's why there are so many likely suitors after him. He can only complement the squad. As for Bent, I don't know of his ability, but the fact that he's willing to take a pay cut to be a Spurs player must count in his favour! Bring on the games! COYS!!!

lifelongspurs - it is good to see that you know your Club!!!!

http://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/view_archived_article.html?old=true&art_id=273341

Defoe signed a new 4 and a half year contract starting from July 1st 2005 - that means he has 2 and a half years left on his contract.

Defoe Is NOT leaving period - Bent will replace Mido (as long as our deal with Bent is not hijacked at the last minute by Big Sam).

Defoe has 2 and a half years left on his contract - go to official THFC website then to News and then to Archive and then to April 2005.

Where does anybody get the one year left nonsense?

Welcome to Darren Bent.I think joining a bigger, better club will help him become a better player.Young for a striker he could develop, given the right tutorage, into a great player.

Bent 16 million v Henry 16 million!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Musr keep Defoe at all costs.

people keep saying to me about henry and bent at 16m, now dont get me wrong 16m for bent is too much, hes worth 10-12m tops but henry doesnt want to play for his club. a player who wants to play for the club hes at is worth 5m on its own. and as for saying Bant is crap, get real and start looking at a different sport to follow cause you claerly dont have a clue about football

Bent will be a great addition to the squad and that is exactly what he will be, just like all other players, a member of the squad.

Like Harry said, if he plays well and scores goals then he plays regular so it is great to have 4 top strikers playing for 2 places.

Personally, I think Bent is a direct replacement for Mido and in some games (Blackburn away) Berbs and Bent are the sort of players you need.

Anyway, it's more young English talent arriving at our club and this makes me very, very happy.

Don't forget, last season we played so many games that when it really counted we were probably run out so having more players should help see us though.

Focus area now is a quality Left winger, personally, I would go for Downing because his stats speak for themselves. He might not be what some people think but he does the job.

Defoe will stay, BMJ has always rated him it's just that JD panicked a bit last season when he saw Keano push ahead in the 'short man' stakes. No better player to bring on though, with 15 to go against an Italian side sitting deep and defending a 0-0.

Bent has seriously gone up in my estimation by dropping £30k per week to join THFC... how many of us would pick a job paying £40k a year over one paying £75k per year? He's obviously a man that wants success and that's what we need.

Berby, Bent, Keano, Defoe, Bale, Dawson, King, Zokora, Taraabt, Lennon, Chimbonda, Kaboul? Huddlestone, Dervitte, Peckhart, Maghoma, Alnwick...

The future is so Lillywhite I have to wear sunglasses.

Lifelongspurs is spot on and also having Bent would get us over the tiny twosome we have to play when Berbatov is out and Mido has strained his groin sneezing.

Defoe will probably go anywhere else and score a hatful but I honestly think his time at Tottenham is over. He needs a change and we need to cash in on him while we still can.

Let's not forget the defence is still lacking, especially with King crocked.

but henry is on 100k/week

There seems to be some confusion over how long Defoe has left on his contract - I thought it was two years but lots of people keep saying he only has one, which if true would be poor management. Harry do you know what the situation is?

Anonymous said...

good news i feel. if you can afford it, Bent is a player worth buying.

When can we officially start gloating on the Henry transfer? Will you be running a seperate book of condolence for our interloper friends?

Anonymous said...

Defoe is clearly a class act, and I agree that it's a big season for him. However it looks like Mido's days are over. It was all nice and cosy when he was on loan trying to earn a contract, but our other strikers are better and I'm not certain about his commitment. Ah well, Arsenal on the slide and Spurs are looking sharp. All we need is a left midfielder so I can sleep at night. Gamst? M.Petrov? I don't care as long as we don't try and fashion one out of Young-Pyo.

I'm not a great fan of Bent...but if the price was more like 8m as oppossed to 13m it would be a good deal.To be honest if we buy him it's as insurance against Berbatov for next year if we don't make CL.
Defoe won't leave as Mido will leave.
Unlike most people...i think Arsenal will do better without Henry...!!!!

No, I don't mate. 'Conflicting reports' appears to be the common phrase on the issue of JD's contract..

Yes, we can officially gloat that Terry henry left Scum .. its even on their website that he is leaving :))

Fisrtsly on the JD situation, I have heard from a very reliable source within the club sevral weeks ago that JD's agent is advising him not to sign a new contract, now that was 8 weeks ago, so maybe his decision has or will change...also all this Bent and Terrence Henry crap, if anybody wants to compare the two then start by either putting them in the same team with the same players and level of quality/service or judge Bent after atleast one season with a club, that is no truely average and achieved promotion like Charlton, then atleast you have an even playing field to compare...Saturday two weeks ago i heard from a memeber of the first 11, that "the Bent deal was done" word for word, however the source was at the time at Carricks wedding and im not sure if it was pre or post alcohol...I also have one other very reliable source who is a high up at the lane, he said last monday that "the deal for bent is progressing" and he's never put me wrong before...personally i expect an announcement this week...UP THE YIDS

Pssst, 'Arold,

Is Benty Worth More Than Henry?
