Tottenham Hotspur's Nasty Rumour

To cut to the chase, the rumour is that Ledley King is crocked.

That his current injury is part of more serious career threatening issue and that his days as a professional player are numbered.

I first heard this rumour last time he was injured, but the source was entirely dubious and I duly ignored it.

Then yesterday the Spurs Odyssey ran a thread on it's members forum from a fan calling himself "genie" claiming that he had been told in the Director's Box that...

"Led's retirement from soccer will be announced in a fortnight."

There then followed numerous posts of a general angst and 'ban him' nature.
However, what makes the story interesting is that Paul Smith, the owner of Odyssey then posted the following....

"I'd prefer the Ledley story to be kept quiet, but expect it will spread.

I have heard from a source close to his mother some weeks ago that he had been advised he ought to pack up."

As some of you may recall, I had Mr Smith on here spelling out in some detail how far up the THFC food chain he felt he was only recently...

So, dear reader, is this alleged disaster in any respect true???

"I'd prefer to keep it quiet"

Now that's not patronising at all!!! Let's hope it's all a load of crap, but why can't we be told??? That's b*ll*cks...

Its not the first time I've heard this either, first time was about 6 weeks ago.

Hopefully its a load of bollocks.

'Now that's not patronising at all!!! Let's hope it's all a load of crap, but why can't we be told??? That's b*ll*cks...'. To quote Harry: 'There then followed numerous posts of a general angst and 'ban him' nature.'. And one further quote: 'You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!'. I truly hope it's a false rumour, but would we really want him to end up with a career like Darren Anderton's? Sadly, sometimes it's just better to admit defeat.

I've heard this from a Spurs employee as well. He initially worded it as 'we would never be able to sell King, as nobody would take him on with his injuries' but went on to say that he heard it could also be career threatening.

I hope he's wrong.

Anonymous said...

Would that be the same petition that Harry has up on the front page?

I heard this early in the season, that Ledders would be quitting this summer and initally dismissed it as balls, like the Paul Scholes rumours. Unfortunately seems more and more likely.

Lets hope this rumour is not true, Ledley has been a great servant to the club and was a ready made replacement for judas. We look more confident when he plays and its a shame he hasn't had more of a run in the England team. I did read somewhere that Gardner said he was in the changing room for the last couple of games - hopefully he wasnt saying go out and win it for me because i will never play again! Hope the club comes out and stamps it out if its not true. Get well soon ledders you legend!

Psssssttt , Psssttttt Torres will be signing before 5pm this evening ... Gospel & Mroientes will be arriving next week ,shsshhh keep it to yourself

every true spurs fan will hope it isn't true, but it will be a crying shame if it is. fingers crossed its all just unfounded rumours. will be a severe loss to spurs and football in general if it is.

Anonymous said...

Harry's a grass!!!!

It will be a mess at WHL if it is true, but I also wanna know why this guy on Odyessy thinks we can't handle the truth...

He's clearly got an inside track. I was on his site earlier and he's now running a thread wanting to now who the grass is!!!!!!!!!

Harry Hotspur go and wait outside the headmaster's office, you've been a very naughty boy, lol.....

Anonymous said...

is this rumour as true as gareth bale joining in january ?! ;-)

Anonymous said...

I sincerely hope that this is codswallop.
this latest injury, we are told, is a broken foot bone (can't spell metatarsil) which is hardly curtains.
patch him up and send him out.
Top player, top bloke, top spur.

Those wanting to keep things quiet have the best interests of the club at heart.

It is possible that this is under consideration - which Spurs are unlikely to want reported widely while decisions are being made.

Likewise if Ledly is going to make an announcement he should be allowed to make it on his own terms.

all that said though

This is still just a rumour. Paul at Spurs Odyssey is very well regarded as the host of what is an excellent site. So if there are murmurs, whether true or not, he will have known about them and what the club is doing in response.

Anonymous said...

Ask the prat at odyssey...

Anonymous said...

I heard this rumour a while ago too. Along with this i heard we tried to offload the big man in the summer for a large amount knowing full well the extent of his injuries. I sincerely hope both points are vicious rumours however!!

Anonymous said...

Best interests of the club?

Bollocks.

This is all about being in the know like some boys club. As a season ticket holder blah blah blah I expect to be kept in the loop and not fed crumbs of information when someone sees fit.
We all love Led and it's a disgrace that they aren't being straight with the fans. Do I have to become a website owning lacky to be in the inner circle these days?

Wasn't this the same website that thought it was alright to print that a reserve player was a 'pussy' ? These folk ought to get behind the fans because that's all they are. No better than me or the person next to me at the Lane.

Acting high and mighty is a silly game as it usually ends up with 'egg ala face'.

In my humble opinion posting details on the internet is possibly not the best way to "keep things quiet", and to start or pass on rumours isn't going to have any effect other than negative. If the club were keeping the extent of injuries quiet in order to attain a large transfer fee surely they would be picked up at a medical. Can't really think of instances where the club has been dileberatly dishonest about injuries either so why start now?

"DannyMackay said...

So he then posted the information on his web site.

What does he do when he's been sworn to absolute secrecy?

Put an Ad on the side of a London bus?

Hope these rumours are false what shame it would be to lose our best player and captain, but it wouldn't suprise me if it was true he is injured a hell of alot.Dont want spurs to lose him but i would rather know the truth,i heard he was back running last week so there's alot of rumours going about but personally i think he will be ok and back by the end of march at the latest, dont you think we would have heard by now they havent lied to us in the past about injuries so why would they start now especially with ledley king.berba's brilliant coys............

Anonymous said...

This would certainly explain why Jol bought Rocha to help Dawson.

Anyway, the gods decide it, not us. He's not the best player anymore, neither should he be captain or king. That's another guy, a foreigner from Southeast Europe.
The king is dead. Long live the king !

time for a post about Berbs, don't you agree HH?

what a load of rubbish, as if Ledley is going to retire from football, all players have injuries in their careers. Whoever wrote this dribble has too much time on their hands and needs to get a proper job, they'd be better suited to yapping in the Quenn Vic, I can only assume they're an arsenal fan.

The very idea that Spurs would knowingly try and sell a crocked player to another club is laughable, it would almost certainly be picked up at the medical unless it was Real Madrid of course (Woodgate anyone?).

Perhaps IF Odyssey members are as smart as they claim to be, they might've realised by now homophobic/racist comments on this site get deleted.

this is the rumour that will actually turn out to be true knowing our luck! i am very worried by this news. ledley should be englands centre back instead of rio. we have another darren anderton, a great player will be ruined by injury!

Anonymous said...

@ 1.35 (kevin)

Totally agree, Michael Owen hasn't played for the best part of a year through injury (just a couple of world cup games in fact) and he's far from retired.

Surely King's foot will heal given time and good treatment. Just don't rush him back is my opinion, even if that means he doesn't play til August that'd be better than losing him altogether.

If any Spurs management/physios/Ledders are reading this then stick with it!

Yid army behind you all the way!!

Anonymous said...

hmmm

Now let me see, if I want to cause confusion and upset among arsenal fans what's the best way of doing it?
Oh I know, I'll post the following:

"I've got it on good authority that Henry's recent injuries are career threatening and he's due to retire at the end of this season.
Arsenal actually tried to sell him to Barca, but when they saw how serious his injuries were Barca pulled out."

You have to realise that every rumour and negative comment that makes the rounds has a negative impact on the morale of fans (this then affects the team who no doubt read what's being written about them). It affects our share price and it generally has a negative effect on the Club as a whole.
My general advice to any spurs fan is, instead of taking any notice of every rumour started by some bloke who thinks he's connected because his aunt Mavis cleans the toilets at ENIC HQ, concentrate on fighting the arse! If anything, divert your energies to starting a whispering campaign against them and their best players as I wouldn't be surprised to hear that they had been doing the same to us for the past few decades!

And NEVER NEVER believe anything put about by the gossip mongers. Wait till you see/hear it with you won eyes/ears.

gents, the program yesterday referred to Ledley running full tilt and almost back to fitness.
Surly the club would say nothing rather than mislead the true fans.

You work at Spurs. Me too! Guy Ritchie's been lurking about the ground all through the season. They reckon he's gonna film his next movie in the district and Spurs and WHL are gonna play a central role in the plot.

This diamond merchant geezer gets knocked off and they bury his body while pouring concrete for a new stand. But the killers failed to find this fabulous set of diamonds and the keys to a safe deposit box stashed in his suit. So now the bad guys hafta somehow secretly get into the concrete and dig him out.

This will be massive for building the club's image. To say nothing of the district and The Quality what strolls about its streets.

But keep this tip on the 'down low' , if you know what I mean.

As Mr Levy's PA you should know better than to tittle tattle on the internet.

Mind you, you're probably feeling no more stupid than Spurs Odyessy's Paul Smith who has just been 'made' in front of thousands doing the very same thing.

I was the game yesterday (What a fantastic performance) when a guy I trust who works for the club told me that the problem was Ledley's knee. He also said there was an internal enquiry looking at the injuries at the club which were viewed as unusual and unexceptional.

Anonymous said...

unfortunately, this is a story i have been dreading for around 6 months since i found out. I heard we agreed a fee with Chelsea in the region of 15-20m and they pulled out the day of the deal after the heard of this injury. Unfortunately, which many people arent aware of, its his hip where the problem lies. I even mentioned this to people whilst watching his past 10 games and the fact you can see him running as if in some pain. I cant see him coming back, or certainly not 100% fit, which is such a shame as he is a bigger presence to our club then JT is at Chelsea.

Anonymous said...

I have had a word with someone I know, he knows a head scout at another major club, there is something going on but which may lead to retirement but he was not totally sure what the issue was. The was a mention of some shady characters being involved and a transfer scenario but that is all I know. Will have to wait and see what the club say, if they say anything. Could just be a rumour being circulated by the arse to ward off any other potential rivals for a signature. What i want to see is Ledley come out and say (much like Defoe did when there was a lot of transfer speculation around him) that he is not retiring and he is happy where he is.

I'll believe it when I see it. For now it sounds like complete rubbish, many players have had bad patches with injury and although it takes time, they recover. All this talk of him going to Arsenal and Chelsea also sounds like complete cr*p, and as if the club would consider selling one of our best (and often THE best) player we've got. And like someone earlier said, why would the club include a double page spread on Ledley's recovery in the programme yesterday - surely they would say nothing?!?!?!
I'm sure it's rubbish....but I can't help feeling a little worried, can't help it....it's Ledley after all!!!

This rumour is 100% true. Martin Jol recently said in a private conversation that he was short of several players to have a top class starting 11. One of these postions that was mentioned was a centre back, when I heard this I thought it was rubish. We have King and Dawson, two top quality centre backs. However the story of Ledley Kings impending retirement might explain why Jol is searching for a starting centre back. This comes from a very trusted and realible source.

martin jol may well have said that about needing another quality centre back, and he was right!!! We need adequate cover in those positions, he wasn't looking to replace Ledley, just to make sure when either were injured, there was someone to play there!! We've suffered without Ledley and we needed a better replacement than Davenport when he got injured. As as a result, your theory is complete sh*t

guys this rumour is absolute rubbish recieved an email from the club today stating the following:::::

Thank you for your email.
The Club's website and our match programmes are the only places you should look to hear up to date and accurate news about any of our players, particularly when it concerns injuries. There was an update on Ledley's injury and recovery progress in Sunday's matchday programme. We expect to see him back in action next month.

Expect to see him grow a third leg by the end of the month. No really, it's from a great source. A small psychic natural hot spring near Hampstead Garden Suburbs. A journalists mate's brother's sister's mum who goes out with Ledley's uncles tropical fish's pet dog took me there yesterday and it also been confirmed by Bruce Forsyth's wig. I swear guy.

And also yeah clubs definately try and sell injured players anyone who thinks not is not awake. If the injury is hidden enough to be missed in a medical bingo! Failed medicals anyone ?

FROM THE INDEPENDENT TODAY

King aims to return in March - in time for 'the prizes'
By Mike McGrath

Published: 28 February 2007

Ledley King believes his first trophy as Tottenham captain is on the horizon but he refuses to rush his comeback from a foot problem to help the hunt for silverware. The 26-year-old has been out since Boxing Day with a stress injury and hopes to return next month, although he is not yet running every day in training.

Spurs had expected King to returnfor the Carling Cup semi-final against Arsenal a month ago but the centre-back suffered a setback in training, making him cautious in his rehabilitation this time around.

"If all goes well I hope to be back at some time in March," said King, whose injury was to the fourth metatarsal of his left foot. "It seems to be going well at this point, but I thought that last time as well. I was ready to come back, then had a bad reaction.

"I'm taking it quite slowly now and hoping that my foot withstands it this time. I tried to come back last time after three or four weeks so this time I am that much further behind and have to do a bit more to build myself back up to the level of full training."

The initial timescale of his recovery at the start of the month was six to eight weeks, meaning he would have just missed the FA Cup quarter-final at Chelsea on 11 March. Now King hopes his team-mates will get a result at Stamford Bridge before he returns to action for the final weeks of the season.

King missed the final part of the last campaign as Spurs pushed for a place in the Champions League - and also England's World Cup in Germany - with an injury to the same troublesome foot, but he hopes to be involved in Spurs' run-in this year, with Martin Jol's men also in the Uefa Cup. "We are getting closer to the prizes now and there are still some big games to come," he said.

"To win something would ease the pain of missing out on a chunk of this season, to get some silverware is mine and everyone else's goal at the club and we believe we can do it. I am sure it can be a great season."

King was in the side earlier this season when Spurs defeated Jose Mourinho's men at White Hart Lane in the Premiership. "There is a belief that we can do it again," he added. "It will be a great game to be involved in and hopefully we can get the right outcome. The atmosphere will be brilliant and we feel that whoever we play in the Cup we can beat them."

Between running in training, King has been on the exercise bike and swimming, although he finds it embarrassing working in the pool with a foot injury. "I am sticking in there, I find it tough though, but it is good fitness work," he said. "If the camera was coming there was no way I would be in the water."
