Tottenham Hotspur vs Bolton Wanderers

"Club Allardyce drinks are free,

Fun and sunshine - there's enough for everyone.

All that's missing is the sea...."

Er... well you get the picture or rather you don't as Blogger has gone wonky, anyway, Bolton have just returned from Tenerife.

Bolton team news then. Ben Haim suspended. Abdoulaye Faye is subject to late tests. Kevin Davies remains sidelined with a foot injury. Stelios is likely to continue in attack alongside Nicolas Anelka and El-Hadji Diouf.

And what of our lot? Still Kingless obviously, now too minus Gardner. Mido and Huddlestone are in doubt but either may yet make the bench.

You don't need me to point out Bolton are hard work. But all (!) that is required is the talent and the 'seeing the job through to the final whistle' attitude that demolished Fulham and broke Everton's heart.

Come On You Spurs!

Harry dear, no sea in Tenerife, are you joking, man? it's an island in the Canaries.
We can beat the trotters with our own strider(that's a Tolkien Joke). We should sing to Berba. We don't want him to go to Spain. He will score today. I know . A little bird told me.Go for it, Spurs. There's nothing to fear.

Can't they just finish each other off? [C vs A]

Shame.

Funny, about the Tenerife thing - I got back from there last night. If I'd known the Bolton team were there I'd have hurled some abuse at them :)

GOSH; I'm having an orgasm !!!

Anonymous said...

come on spurs - at least go one better than fulham last week!

Anonymous said...

Shit!
Keano is too nervous a captain. Now he's out and we are one man short and trotters one goal more. this can be a terrible disaster unless the king acts. Com'on Berba !

Anonymous said...

It's stoppage and that's where we see how good a manager is. What will Jol do?
And Keane will get 4 or 5 games suspension. Give Berba the armband, ffs !!!

Anonymous said...

it wasnt handball - hit him on the chest. dont start knocking keane cos that moron graham poll made a mistake - again!

Anonymous said...

sorry, watch the replay, Poll was right.
it happens, I'm not blaming Keano, yet he's a bit nervous for my liking.
Com'on Spurs we need another goal !

And it's 4-1 and we've got Spurs as we like them , at last.

Jol: good sub again, Malbranque made the difference in the final minutes.
The team played with 10 men as if they were 12.
Trotters are bullies: 20 fouls, 4 yellows.Just 3 fouls and no yellows for Spurs. Lovely.

Keane was so and so: 2 goals, one assist and one terrible mistake due to hhis nerves. He needs to rest and cool off.

Rocha and Zokora finally showed their worth.
And Berba was and is the King: he led, he fought, he was great.I would give him a 10/10 if he had scored. Anyway, 9/10 and Man of the Match.

Congrats to everyone.
I'm happy!

(and a fucking brawl in the cup, but Moaninho takes it home. Here comes the hysterics. But I still think this is in our favour.)

Spuryid, over and out, was with you at HH's, for the match comments.Cheers!

Dying to see MOTD!

Listened to the game, sounds as if the Final in terms of cup type action really took place in N17 this teatime.

Roll on tonight's highlights! Hopefully have the appropriate footage up on here sometime Monday.

The one million dollars question today is:
what did the fans sing to Berby afterall?

It was two goals and a straight red for Robbie Keane as three points were banked at the expence of Bolton at the Lane.

With the team 3-0 to the good at the time, Keane was punished in the wake of a goalline clearance, which referee Graham Poll deemed to be with the use of a hand or arm.

Keane had made it 11 goals for the season with his double strike and you couldn't have ruled out a hat-trick on a day where the team made it three wins in a week with the 4-1 win.

With just one change made to the starting XI that began at Goodison Park in midweek, the team were quickly on the offensive with Ricardo Rocha - in for the injured Anthony Gardner - cleverly losing his man in deep before setting Aaron Lennon off on a dash that would see the England man chopped down by Abdoulaye Faye. The set piece routine involving Jermaine Jenas and Michael Dawson, unfortunately, did not come off.

The breakthrough was made on 11 minutes from a Paul Robinson clearance that was fielded by Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian knocked on into the path of Keane to the left of the area and, from quite a tight angle, the Irishman slammed the ball into the near post where it beat Jussi Jaaskelainen, clipped the frame of the goal and travelled into the other side of the net.

Robinson reacted superbly to keep out a Stelios header at the other end before the advantage was doubled after 18 minutes. Berbatov beat Faye to cushion the ball in the direction of Keane, who used the outside of his boot to test Jaaskelainen, with the goalkeeper only able to parry his effort. Waiting to pounce in the rebound was Jenas to make it three goals in three games.

It was then treble joy just three minutes later when Pascal Chimbonda surged forward down the right and delivered a low cross to the near post where Keane was waiting to divert the ball past a bemused Jaaskelainen.

Those at the Lane, who gave a rousing reception to Glenn Hoddle on the pitch before kick-off, were in fine voice, while Bolton at this point must have wished they were still in warm weather training in Tenerife.

They would have felt a little better about things on 36 minutes when after something of a penalty area melee, an Ivan Campo header was cleared off the line by Keane - with his hand in the opinion of referee Mr Poll, who flashed a straight red card at the two-goal striker.

To his obvious distress, Keane's afternoon was over and we faced the prospect of a visibly lifted Bolton side with 10 men for the rest of the first and whole of the second half.

It could have been four before the interval when Teemu Taino cantered forward on a solo mission and drilled in a shot that it took the legs of Campo to divert wide.

The team regained a good degree of composure early in the second period and were straight on the front foot with a solid spell of possession at a time when Bolton would have been seeking to be well in charge of events.

It could have been four after 56 minutes when Berbatov made a good connection with a Jenas free-kick from the right, but his header just cleared the crossbar with Jaaskelainen motionless. Berbatov then ran out of space after sprinting onto a Tainio throughball, he attempted to make himself a yard on his marker in front of goal but ended up in retreat.

It was a first class response to the setback of a reduction in numbers and Bolton were again looking bereft of ideas. It saw the introduction of Henrik Pedersen by Sam Allardyce, which was soon followed by a change of our own with Tainio being replaced by Steed Malbranque.

Robinson saved excellently low to his left from Nicolas Anelka with 20 minutes remaining before Berbatov did so well to tee up Jenas for a drive that Jaaskelainen blocked and Malbranque was not far off pouncing on the rebound.

Malbranque then dispossessed Meite but his shot cannoned off the knee of Campo and just over, then another sub, Ricardo Vaz Te, got the last head on some aerial ping-pong at our end that nearly proved costly.

It must be recorded that Berbatov was absolutely awesome in battling alone in attack. His workrate could not be faulted and his ability to hold out the ball and create was second to none. The fans at the Lane were not slow to voice their appreciation.

The second half could have been a backs to the wall, nail biting 45 minutes, bu the application of Berbatov and co made it so you felt that more goals were on the way, rather than simply retaining advantage with ten men.

It turned out that way in stoppage time when Malbranque broke down the right and centred to where Lennon was waiting to apply the final touch for a richly deserved fourth goal.

So after an energy sapping game, that made it six points and progress in the FA Cup this week, the team will be content in the knowledge that there is no midweek fixture awaiting and West Ham looms in seven days time.

Lovely Jubley:

Spurs boss Martin Jol pays tribute to Dimitar Berbatov:
"It's a long time since I saw somebody play like he did on his own up front.
"You always say you have to cope with the English game, but he's played three games this week and shown he's a real team player."

Boss Sam Allardyce:
"That was a poor performance and I can't accept that.
"Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane tore our back four apart in the first 21 minutes and that was the end of the game.

"Even when they were down to 10 men we didn't do things quickly enough and lost the space that we could have exposed."

Yes. We are back!!!!!

90 FULL TIME: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 4-1 BOLTON WANDERERS: The whistle goes and Bolton cant make their man advantage count as they end up the wrong end of a 4-1 scoreline. Spurs though did play well and in the end did deserve the victory.

90 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 4-1 BOLTON WANDERERS (LENNON): Lennon heads home from close range after a good cross from Malbranque, and Spurs have now confimed 3 points.

90 The game enters Stoppage time and Spurs are only a few minutes away from a well earned victory.

88 Stalteri comes on to replace Zokora, who has played well in midfield today as he has had to cope with the extra workload.

87 Minutes to go now and Bolton it seems, are beginning to give up the ghost.

84 Vaz Te gets free of Lennon, but his header across goal is met by none of his team mates and the ball escapes without causing any harm.

82 The game looks like it is going to stay 3-1 as Bolton have never really been able to take advantage of the extra man.

79 Campo is booked, it seems a bit harsh, but he is cautioned never the less.

77 Vaz Te, from only a few yards out, somehow manages to head the ball over the bar, although Meite's original effort did seem to be on target before Vaz Te intercepted.

76 Vaz Te comes on to replace an almost non exsistant Kevin Nolan

75 Campo makes a great effort to deflect a Spurs shot over the bar, and Campo has been Bolton's best player so far, despite the current scoreline.

73 Jaaskelainen makes a great double save from Jenas and Malbranque, and Spurs were so close to going 4-1 up with that chance.

72 Credit must also go to the attacking ability that Spurs are showing, Jenas, Berbatov and Zokora are all having good games.

69 Bolton still haven't made their man advantage count, although credit must go to Spurs for defending as well as they have done.

66 Malbranque comes on to replace Tainio

64 Anelka has a powerful shot on goal, but Robinson makes a good save.

63 Gardner is replaced by Pedersen as Bolton look to attack.

62 Berbatov goes through on goal after beating the offside trap, but Jaaskelainen does well to save.

60 Gardner is cautioned for a lunging tackle on Chimbonda

57 Campo produces a good run to expose a space for Meite, but his effort goes just wide.

56 Berbatov escapes his marker and gets a free header, but the effort goes inches over the bar.

55 Meite is booked for a foul on Berbatov

51 The second half has begun at a slower pace, but with occassional flashes of genius from Lennon and Berbatov, anything is soon possible.

48 Berbatov have a great shot on goal after a clever flick, but Jaaskelainen saves well, and Berbatov continues his good from from the first half.

45 The second half kicks-off with Spurs still very much in control, but Bolton do have a glimmer of hope with that Speed penalty and with Spurs also down to ten men.

45 HALF TIME: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 3-1 BOLTON WANDERERS: The whistle goes and despite a good late finish from Bolton, 10 man Spurs are still much in control going into the half time break.

45 The half goes in to stoppage time, which there is three minutes of.

42 Bolton are beginning to get all the breaks now as luck seems to be going there way, but with only a few minutes before half-time, can Bolton add another?

40 Diouf is getting a stern talking to by Sammy Lee as Diouf's constant talking to the officials will get him in more trouble than he already is.

39 Bolton have uped their stake in this game, and Speed has a great effort on goal that is deflected over the bar.

37 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 3-1 BOLTON WANDERERS (SPEED): Speed scores from the spot and Bolton now have a chance to get back into this game as Spurs are down to ten men.

35 Keane is sent off for handling the ball on the line.

35 Campo's header is blocked on the line by a Spurs hand, and Bolton have been given a penalty.

33 Zokora is also showing good
pace in this game, and Bolton are struggling to cope with him.

30 Bolton really aren't in this game as it stands, but with the form that Keane and Berbatov are in, it will be hard for Bolton to get a foothold in this match.

27 Keane escapes his marker again and his cross shot is well saved by Jaaskelainen

27 Bolton have had a terrible start to this game, and they are going to have to change something if they are to get back into this game.

25 Andranik Teymourian comes on to replace Faye after he recieves an injury.

22 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 3-0 BOLTON WANDERERS (KEANE): Keane loses his man and gets in at the near post where he slots home the ball to give Spurs a 3 goal lead after only 21 minutes.

20 A Giannakopoulos chance is stopped on the line, and Bolton will be disappointed that they couldn't convert the chance.

19 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2-0 BOLTON WANDERERS (JENAS): After a save by Jaaskelainen, Jenas scores from close range from the rebound.

16 Diouf is booked for constant talking to the referee after he believed he was fouled by Lennon.

15 The ball goes into the Bolton net, but the flag is raised! And Spurs are dominating the game at the moment

13 Robinson makes a brilliant save as Giannakopoulos cant get his shot past the England shotstopper

11 TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 1-0 BOLTON WANDERERS (KEANE): A route one ball is helped on by Berbatov to Robbie Keane, who neatly finishes and puts the ball in at the near post.

10 A slow start to the game as few real chances have been carved out by either side in the opening ten minutes.

7 Lennon shows great pace with a run through the middle of the park, but the Bolton defence are equal to him as they clear the danger.

5 Lennon is fouled on the edge on of the Wanderers box, and this is a dangerous set piece to defend for Bolton, but luckily for them, Dawson heads over the bar.

2 Spurs will want to take full advantage of the fact that they cant play in Cardiff today, and Martin Jol will be expecting nothing less than a positive start.

0 Tottenham have been poor at home in 2007, and Bolton, who have the chance to leapfrog Arsenal will want to continue that run.

0 Faye returns to the starting line-up as Bolton make 2 changes from there last game, The Trotters begin with: Jaaskelainen, Hunt, Meite, Faye, Gardner, Giannakopoulos, Nolan, Campo, Speed, Diouf, Anelka

0 Gardner is out as Rocha replaces him, Spurs kick-off with: Robinson, Chimbonda, Dawson, Rocha, Y, Lee, Lennon, Zokora, Jenas, Tainio, Berbatov, Keane
