Tottenham Hotspur - Who's This Zidan Chap, Then?

Here's one for yer, twenty five years on the clock, powerful engine, nice little runner, FSH, great body work and comes complete with a letter of the alphabet shaved into his head as if he were sponsored by it, say as an episode of Seasame Street.

January 2007 Zidan left Weder Bremen for for a reported 3 million Euros. He joined Mainz05 and immediately scored 6 goals in the first 5 matches he played, catapulting the team from last to 10th place March 2007.

The Egyptian talent also received 50% of votes by "Kicker" magazine and earned himself the title of "Player of the Month of February" in Germany and Mainz became "Team of the month" in the German Bundesliga. Cor!

It's not all been sticky buns and ginger beer, injuries and the inevitable ANC sagas have dogged his career... and word is he might be a little feisty. Mind you they said that about Mido and all we got were empty kebab wrappers and a member of Man City's medical staff hanging around the West Stand Car Park, looking at his watch.

I can see some viewing him as spectactularly selfish and I might find myself being one of them...

very selfish player, i don't think spending money on more egyptian player is a good idea

I live in Frankfurt in Germany and have seen Zidan play live a few times this season and also a lot more on the box. He's not a bad player but he is certainly not the type of player that we want or need. He's not very good for team spirit and tbh he's not good enough to improve our team. I've had enough of signing Ghaly or Murphy types just for the sake of it. Now that we have signed Bale and are being linked with Nani... it's all looking good and positive for next season! COYS

I agree far too selfish, he would get crippled in the Premiership and do we want a player that doesnt want to follow rules? I dont see MJ dealing too kindly with that !

Seems quite handy on the ball - nice tricks. But looks very selfish, passing doesn't seem to be in this 'locker'. Surely wouldn't take premiership keepers long to work out that if you keep you legs shut he is unlikely to score (check out how many of his goals are throught the keepers legs)

looks tasty but no thanks

Harry touched on it in his bit and I'm saying it out loud, the bloke looks mentally unhinged to me....

He got fined, when he palyed in Denmark for buying a stolen watch on the streets (who pays 10000£ to "a guy" for a watch?)

It was a womens watch, and the original owner saw it on the telly when they interviewed Zidan after a match.

He also got convicted of hitting his ex-girlfriend

thx, but no thanls.

I have seen him play a lot of times, and there is no doubt that he's tricksy on the ball, but if its not going his way, he is crap. He needs to be treated like a baby, and can't cope with adversity at all.
Now I know Arse fans look at all spurssites, so I will explain it in a way you can understand as well. I know all Arse fans have seen Dirty Dancing, and you all know the song "She's like the wind" well...like that, but whit a he.
Since Keano always will be choosen before him, it would not take more than a month for him to start bitching.
Keep Defoe and forget aaaallll about Zidan.

You all fucken racists. If he was a Jew, You opinions will be totally different. Wake up shitheads, this is sports. The guy has already stated he will be staying in Germany. I add, the way fans treated Galy in man city game, would make spurs his last choice anyway.

Haha :) Who's this muppet above me ?! Ghaly is a jerk, and no Zidan is not good enough for us. We already have the skills of Taarabt in the same role. He is also way way way to weak physicaly to stand the prem.

Give the boy a go. If he turns out to be mental then show him the door. I'm sorry phil thfc, but I've never seen Murphy of Ghaly pull out any of the skills Zidan did in that video. We've got to realise that we have to take chances sometimes as the very top players go to clubs in the champions league.

The only thing we are really lacking is another Egyptian. particularly the wife-beating, stolen-goods buying, nutter that this guy is.
All of these Egyptians are wound-up way too tight and are a liability.
As for the guy who called anti-egyptian-footballers racist....fuck off dune-coon.
(now THAT was racist)
No more Egyptians please - EVER!

He clearly has pace, has ability with both feet and I have never criticized a striker for being selfish. I have only ever seen highlights so I cannot comment about his overall game. From the compilation, he obviously looks up when he has time so it's hard to believe that he doesn't use his teammates when they can keep up with him. His attitude etc are matters that the staff will adjudge and if lacking, then he will not even be considered. The talent is undeniable though and if he were on the left with Lennon on the right, there would not be many backs that would be able to match their pace. Mainz is being relegated and he scored 14 goals in 13 appearances. The club only scored 34 goals in total which explains the relegation. The Bundesliga is not exactly a powderpuff league either so I'm sure that he's faced his share of rash challenges and has survived. If the attitude can be managed, he seems a player. COYS

archibaldsteve: Good to see some positive comments about his ability as he seemed to be getting flack that doesn't line up with his obvious talent. I was singing his praises on earlier post and was beginning to doubt my judgement while still considering what I've seen as fantastic. I hate that he hit his ex girlfriend but none of us is perfect. I think he would be great on the left or 2nd striker for us and his pace would be enough to unsettle any defence. I don't buy that he won't cut it in the Prem, as mentioned before... Bundesliga is no softie league.

The last thing we need in midfield or attack is another player who *may* add quality *if* he can handle the step up in quality/physicality/pressure.

We have finished 5th twice and surely will be pressing the top 4 and in all the cups next season - this is not the sort of player who is going to help. We need to be buying either ultra-talented youngsters (Commolli buys) or sure fire players for large money (which we have in abundance).

2 or 3 million for someone like Zidan is just going to take up another space in the squad where we could be spending 10-20 on a world class player of the same age or younger. And this is without even considering his attitude and how it might effect the squad (or the precedent of our two other Egyptians).

As has been mentioned before, we have Ghaly (and his tantrums), Hud, Jenas, Tainio, Keane who can play in that area and Taarabt who looks just as skilful as anything on that video yet is only just 18.

No thank you.

As a Dane I had the pleasure to enjoy Zidan in the Danish league a few years ago. He might very well be the greatest talent to have played in our country the last ten or so years. Selfish? maybe but he can dribble like the best and shoot better than the most - with both feet. And got a good eye for the play (but the Danish league was of course just under his level). I became a big fan even though he didn't play for a club that I support. He could do it on spurs level and might even become an improvement soon. He's much more of a Defoe than a Ghaly or Mido!! With all respect for those guys for trying! Zidan is very sympathetic too - a quite and humble guy working hard, gentle to the press and fans, but also amitious. Yes I like him very much!

Anonymous said...

Ambitious that is... :)

the guy looks phenominal and he can play any where in midfield. are use mental seriously his there best player of course his going to be selfish he carries the team like rooney and ronaldo do at man u. lennon could learn a few tricks and he can work on passin he and lennon would be deadly switchin it up on th flanks

i know its very off the topic but will all spurs fans watch this Gareth Bale Video, nothing short of magical.

i think he looks a good player. worth having on the bench those type of players who can come on and mix it up, when people are tiring. i think hes worth giving a go if hes not going to cost too much.

Anonymous said...

Another Dane here....He's a fantastic player, but yuo will not find anyone more selfish, no matter where you look.....I could see him having trouble containing himself when tackled by the likes of let's say Savage or M. Brown....

Anonymous said...

the player we want in our midfield is a ivory coast international caller kader keite i think he plays for lille. we have been linked to him and he is s**t hot check him out on you tube now!!!!!!!!!

sorry its kader keita and here's the link, take your pick. http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=kader%20keita&search=Search

One man team. As soon as he gets it, nobody gets a sniff of it. Like the coach's son in my son's Sunday team. (Alot of sunns. ) Would make a great sub for the last 10 minutes when everyone else is cream crackered and don't want the ball. An expensive whore's trinket. I bet he won't come anyway when Ghaly tells him of how both he and Mido have been doing such a sterling job of winning over the Tottenham Mob and cementing an image of Egyptian footballers as petulant self obsessed fancy boys.

Anonymous said...

Surely we should have learnt from our experience with Egyptian footballers...... do not touch with a 100 foot barge pole!!

Anonymous said...

Oh, and that is not being racist that is being honest about my feelings towards Egyptian´s as footballers, they do not have the right temperament for the premiership.

Anonymous said...

@sydney wale. Are you kidding me with this? Ghaly is a petulant, self-obsessed fancy boy? Let's have Noe Pamarot give you a full-on kick in the head and see if you'd be ready to play on with half your teeth missing.

Anonymous said...

Oh, and by the way - it's nice to see the racist contingent out in full force. You must all be very proud of yourselves.

Anonymous said...

Re:zmiller

You may be confusing racism with an intellectually vulgar tendency towards overt generalisations founded by frustration at the inability of a middle-eastern gentleman to contain a level of self importance not entirely complimented by his talent.

If you sat any one of these verbal jack-the-lads down and asked them seriously, whether they actually believed that any footballer born in Egypt would by definition be bad at the sport, you'd almost certainly find that they would have to answer "no". Unless they were keen to be seen as having a learning disability. Or indeed, did have. But I don't think that's your point is it?

We don't particularly want players with the degree of arrogance or petulance which Mido & Ghaly have shown, whether Egyptian or not.

Or am I being petulantist?

Anonymous said...

Thanks for clearing that up. Very enlightening. And I completely agree that Mido is petulant and self-obsessed. Ghaly is, however, another kettle of fish entirely - even if he is Egyptian and by rights should be EXACTLY like all other Egyptians in every way. He works hard, would lie down in traffic for the team, has been consistently played out of position since he signed, and was subbed on and off in a game. If it was me, I wouldn't have stopped at throwing the shirt.

Anonymous said...

P.S.: And I'm neither arrogant nor petulant.

Anonymous said...

I have never heard of him. but now I have seen the clip he looks good a player who can change things on the pitch. who gives shit what he does off it.

Anonymous said...

Apoligies zmiller for implying that all Egyptian players share the same traits. I am only commenting on recent events (Ghaly shirt Mido 'mistake') and they get lumped together through nationality just like all soccer fans are thugs. Sorry.

BTW; Ghaly and Mido have very large egos

Anonymous said...

Come on Arsenal!!

Anonymous said...

@sydney wale. Quite alright - especially since you're big enough to admit to a slight overgeneralization. :) I still think you're mistaken about Ghaly, though. I don't see a big ego on him, just a lad who's frustrated as f***, that he never gets a chance in his own position. And having played the game at a reasonable level myself, I completely understand his fury at being subbed on and off in the same game. It's just terribly humiliating. And as for being booed by your own fans, well, don't even get me started...

Anonymous said...

where did all this filthy racism come from? i thought us yids were the liberal type, different to the Chelsea and West Ham fans?

Anonymous said...

I believe this lad has a koppah on.

He looks good but would prefer kader keita or/and Nani. I think Zidan would be smashed to peices in the PL.

Trying to build a team!

Anonymous said...

we want this guy, i think he might be the best left sided youngster out there

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvQF4qAPCZk&mode=related&search=

Anonymous said...

The guy looks pretty skilful but to be honest, the standard of defending and goalkeeping in that video was laughably awful. I reckon even good old Ziegler could have scored a few of those.

We need a left winger who's a proven player in Spain or in England.

Surely we're at a stage now where we should be looking to compete with the best clubs for buying players (a la beating Man U to Bale) rather than looking at a great player and simply trying to find someone like him with potential.

Bring in Nani or Petrov, I say.

I don't think it's racist to say nasty things about an Egyptian, unless you are saying them JUST because he's Egyptian.

Sydney's comments are

a) bloody accurate
b) found by this presiding Mickey
Mouse judge to be non racist.

when i read those comments, i thought u are talking about another player than the one i saw on that youtube clip, he is amazing and for those who say he isn't good enough for primiership, well its not a wrestling league, its football exactly the same as the sport he used to play in germany

this clip is soo old, go to youtube and see his newer clips to find him doing the sae tricks on bayern munchen defence hoping you will stop saying he can only do it with stupid goalkeepers and that sort of nonsense

this player in the video is great besides i think we should stop saying nasty things about egyptians, this kind of generalizations is very irritating gives indication to an awful type of ignorance, should we stop getting french players coz malbraunque scores a n own goal against sevilla, OFCOURSE NOT so why we should stop getting egyptian players if they are so talented like this one just because you don't like mido or ghaly
should we wait till he proves himself even more in hamburg or stuttgart in champions league just to find ourselves 2 or 3 years from now trying to sign him but won't be able to afford him,he is a TOP player, admit it

Anonymous said...

i think we should get him, the clips i saw on youtube for him is amazing and his statistics are very impressing too, german people are talking about him every where on their sites, if he wasn't that good why would half teams of the bundesliga including stuttgart(winners of bundesliga) and hamburg chase him as they are doing now, also monaco and paris st german and they are all big clubs with some of them playing in champions league next seoson, anyway i think he will be good for us especially if defoe and mido are going to leave

i just read that hamburg wants him as the main summer signing to push and their limits ahead in next year eufa cup and the exact thing in marsellie but this time for champions league

why in the world would they chase him if he is selfish or weak as i saw in some of comments above me

i didn't know anything about him before but when i found he was voted the best player in bundesliga this season in the welt.de poll i got curious, thats the link for poll results, hope you can understand german, anyway he is in the second pic and they wrote under it he is the first player of season (1 platz) with 52% of votes and thats kinda impressive

NO - NO - NO

flaky, inconsistent, weak, occasionally hits one without knowing how on earth he did it, as he was looking down all the time, pysically way to weak, mentally a collymore, but of course thinks he is gods gift to the game, i could go on and on - NO - NO - please

Anonymous said...

i don't know why some of you talk that nasty about this player, he is pretty skillful and honestly no one in ur team has such skills, maybe only taraabt after 2 or 3 years, you didn't say for instance that we don't need hi because we have berba, that would be nice comment but you keep saying things about him that sometimes as i read comments i had to make sure iam still on the same page of that video

anyway i don't think we can get hi atall, he has like dozen offers fro champions league clubs, would he leave all these offers and coe here where unfortunately most of us would treat him as if he was a copy of mido without even giving him a chance, besides he will not have to prove himself again if he left to another bundesliga club playing champions league

just hoping he won't pick hamburg,so we won't feel embarasses when he scores against us in eufa cup next year

i feel kinda sorry we coudn't get him, for nice guys who say he is selfish, there is something called statistics you can read instead of throwing ugly ignorant judgments like that because this player was one of top assists in bundesliga in the last 2 seasons
