Tottenham Hotspur : A Bit Thin On Strikers

Where were the goals when it came to playing a quality outfit such as Chelsea?

I know we've had goal from virtually every player this season, but outside 'find of the decade' Berbatov, where are our strikers?

Mido was improved since his last outing at here, but that's like saying our washing machine is easier to move around since we put coasters on it. I don't think his heart is in it and if Man City or whoever want him he should go.

Understand, I'm not basing this upon his header that was saved, but upon his entire performance plus a couple of stupid comments put out of late - you know, the usual... 'I need more starts or I'll have to consider offers etc'.

Frankly, as a fan, I need you to lose half a stone and fight.

The Defoe (not so great) Debate rumbles on courtesy of the Red Tops, this week he's allegedly taking his patchy form to Old Trafford. We need a reliable foil to Dimitar. Robbie is one answer, but right now, I don't see a third.

What's the answer? Dean Ashton?

If Defoe wants I can pack his bags for him. He is so over rated its unreal, he's lazy and his heart is not at Tottenham. Mido, Jenas and Ghaly should follow him too. Im sick of watching Jenas and Ghaly give the ball away in midfield, they cant even play the basic pass and these stupid mistakes are costing us, ive had enough of watching average players in our team, clear the whole lot of em out!!!

Anonymous said...

Ghaly and Jenas to go? Have you been watching Spurs recently? Ghaly ws probably the best pplayer aganst the scum and Jenas brings much needed speed from midfield.

Anonymous said...

Jenas pace? He cant even get out of walking mode as for Ghaly he aint got a clue. If you think we can win something with these players in midfield your dreaming.

many of the above comments above are bollocks!

changing half of the team will not help the club at all...it will take one season to gel new players, and spurs fans usualy are patient with a mximum of 3 games for them, new players, to perform before slating them on/off the field....MJ have said that spurs are only short of 2/3 players...and these 2/3 players may cost 10-15 millions each! and it is a gamble to buy these type of players...just look at ballack at 130 k/weeks at chelsea

Jenas has scored more goals than any other midfielders in the spurs team

Just one comment for anonymous slating Jenas and Ghaly:

(to the tune of knees up mother brown of course)

"Gooner in disguise,
Gooner in disguise,
ee ii ee ii ee ii ee ii,
you're a gooner in disguise, oi!"

Regardless of Thursday's outcome we should here and now state our belief in and support for Jol and his team. The return of Leds may be the boost we need to turn the tie around but even if we fall short the fact is progress has been made this year, albeit patchy on occasions. A UEFA cup spot (even by finishing 7th and relying on others to do the necessary) would be creditable. Mido has to go, Pederson from Blackburn or someone similar needs to arrive along with a couple more left footed left sided players of quality. Balance is everything.

Despite my reservations about the first poster knowing what's in Defoe's heart, I completely agree that Ghaly, Jenas, Mido and I'd add Murphy, Tainio and Malbranque are not top 5 first team players. I'd keep Tainio and Malbranque for the squad but if we're going to take on the top 5 believe we need to buy two higher quality midfielders as well as a left back and striker. Although most of our midfielders 'on their day' are well above average, their consistant inconsistancy brings their average way down to 'ordinary' level over the course of a season and that isn't good enough if this club is serious about progress. I'm also sick of a very good defence and strike-force being let down by the midfielders lack of vision and inability to hold on to the ball.

Go on the Spurs!

Taylor from Portsmouth is supposedly a Spurs fan, a decent player and left footed. Sign him up now!

Taylor is also a left back - a left footed left back would be novelty...

You have to feel for JD - when Keane was out injured Berba and him played really well togther - JD knows that Jol favours Keane so all the time he plays with that awareness. Put yourself in his position: your boss regards YOU as a stopgap until the high flyer comes back and gets your desk / sales patch - hardly builds confidence. Defoe is a streak player: he tends to score regularly when in the side for a long run. I don't even blame Jol: earlier in the season he was getting flack for rotating the squad - now that he knows his preferred eleven that's upsetting people aswell.

The post above is bollocks. Defoe has had so much more chance than people seem to be able to remember, and he's just not good enough. I was all for Defoe to be sold, but he did strike up a partnership with Berba so I think he needs a chance, but I'm absolutely sick of reading about poor Defoe etc... He doesn't take enough of his chances, is pretty greedy and is always caught offside. He has limited ability yet his fans always hide behind Jol's selection. He's had as much playing time under Jol, but has scored less goals than Keane, and doesn't work anywhere near as hard as Keane, I would keep him for now but the longer he goes on looking so average the more people are starting to realise what's actually been clear for almost two seasons, he's not THAT Good!

I agree with el..how Malbranque stayed on the pitch on Saturday is beyond me, and as for Mido, surely it would be better to put one of the youngsters on instead...they couldn't make any less impact on a game.
I feel sorry for DeFoe because he has to play with Mido and not Berbatov and against Chelsea Jol had selected a mid-field that was never going to create anything...there wasn't one player of true class until Zokora came on and even that's debatable.
I think Jol has identified mid-field as a key area but bought a succession of mediocre and fairly mediocre players to play there, hence we are not going to challenge top 4 until that is put right. Maybe Lennon, Taarabt, Zokora and Jenas would be the best for Thursday, with the headless chicken on the bench and DeFoe and Berbatov up front.

News of the day.
1. El Dandy ( Berba, who else?) is staying until January 2008 (in the least). Finally his agent spoke clearly: there will be no transfer in the Summer.
2. King is back. Don't expect too much. He's certainly out of form, but it's good if he's fit.

And now the problem:
there's only one King. So who's gonna be?

ahahaha
The one and only dark lord El Mour strikes again, this time imagine who he's provoking with his mind games and shameless tongue:

“You cannot choose the player of the season because he did something magnificent for three weeks. It has to be for the whole season."

Now, don't forget to reply: that's all he wants...

Jan Klaas Huntelar (loads of goals) would be a good replacement for Defoe if he wants to go. If Utd do really want him couldn't see him turning that down but at the same time think getting 10 million back for him would be a good return for a striker with no confidence left at all, maybe best for all to move him on. Mido - his performance was awful, was so easy for Chelsk to contain him and even when he did get free his finish was disgraceful from point blank range, his body language says it all and he makes Peter Crouch look like Pele!. Also cannot see how people fancy Ghaly, no conviction and urgency in his play, doesn't think fast enough, IMO not good enough and they should both walk like Egyptians in the summer. Jenas, Tainio and Malbranque are decent enough squad players. Huddlestone is still developing into a great player needs another year or two till we see the best of him. I think we need one stand out central midfielder to compliment Zokora, maybe a Steven Gerrard type player - commanding, powerful and dangerous on the attack but very hard to find, how about Zokora's mate Yaya Toure?. Dunno about Ashton being a top 4 team quality foil for Berba, would have love to have had Dirk Kuyt here to give him competition, along with Huntelaar and Wes Schneider being added to the squad our attacking options would have been mouthwatering along with the ever reliable and committed Keano!. We cant complain too much though, feel we are still the 5th best team in England with a good chance of doing Sevilla and going all the way. Thursday will finish 2-1 to us and go into extra time, mark my words...we can do it COYS!!!

I asay sell Defoe now whilst we can still get something for him. I will never forgive his anonimity in the second leg of the Carling Cup semis against Arsenal. Mido too is never going to be what we need. I hate to continue the trend but Ashton and Tevez would be two half decent replacements.

Then MJ can concentrate on a goalie. It is completely unacceptable to be beaten from distance as often as Robinson has been this season Right from day 1 when Campo beat him and he has gone on to cost us a hatful of points this term.

i think spurs should pull out all stops to sign miroslav klose from werder bremen we attracted berbatov and he would be THE perfect foil for berba and a proven scorer at the highest levels. also wesley sneijder from ajax if we could sign him it would be a great signing a class player all round but these players are going to be hard to get.if not why not sign argetine international javier saviola but could be as patchy as defoe i dont want spurs to sign ashton thats ione thing we have to be looking at bigger fish than him if we are going to break into the top four i hear roumours about harewood, reo coker these are players that we dont need to buy.spurs are going the right way with bringing in good young talent all we really need is another left back left midfielder and a striker to replace the unfortunate mido and couple that with taarabt, dervitte, pekhart, dixon, maybe breaking into the 1st team at some point next season things will be looking good but we are going to have to be patient as usual!!!...........

Anonymous said...

Good call Mr Daintz,
Klose to add to Huntelaar and Wes Schneider would be amazing, but the dificult thing is getting these kind of players to chose us over the likes of the Scum, Scousers, Chelk and Mancs.

Go on MJ pull out your Dutch contacts...Berba have a word in German with Klose. We can dream eh?

Agree we dont need any second rate relegation players from the Spammers, we have our own youngsters to develop.

you can always dream when your a yid!!.would be nice to see players wanting to come to us like these surely everybody as had enough of the current top four!!.can't wait for thu night at the lane singing in the south stand and the king has returned(for about 10 mins till he bruises something)lets hope berba and the boys turn up and play how we know they can....yids.......

right, agreed defoe and mido can go, i'd be extatic with £12m for the pair. I think Jenas, with a bundle more consistancy, will still prove to be a class act. Ghaly is one of them squad players that we need 2 gel the team together, having 20 players demanding 1st team football is not going to do wonders for team morale. I think what we need is that spark that lennon caused when he 1st entered the fray, the answer in my opinion is tarabat. seen him twice against west spam and chelski, he had more than respectable cameos. On the striker front i feel berba and keane are the leaders, we need a tall striker to replace berba, cus he cant play 50 games a season and i think barnard would be a suitable replacement for keane, im sick of our young tallent being sold off before fulfilling their full potential at spurs.
Priorities currently lie in obtaining a left winger and left back, my votes go to MGP from blackburn and gareth bale
COYS

I'm going to stick my neck aout and predict that Zokora will be a great player for Spurs. I think he has some of the qualities we lack in midfield and if he cam just keep it at 100% every game he could be our Roy Keane. Jenas I suspect is going to be a nearly man, I like his skill but he gi9ves the ball away carelessly and that is fatal. We can't afford the best players so we have to make do with what we have and get a combo that works.

Anonymous said...

Anon 7.04, its not that we can't afford these players it is more a case of having a strict transfer policy and wage structure, and limited stadium capacity for which I have to take my hat off to the management for giving us a very respectable squad with little net outlay. i.e. it has been estimated that calculating net expenditure on transfers is under 10 million for a squad that is very nearly getting there and that is over the past 2 or 3 years. Infact 2 or 3 more top class players and we will make that top 4. Compare that to Chelsea who have spent 350 million plus which is sick. It will just make it even more satisfying when we win that Prem title without doing our b*llocks on transfer money.

i don't agree with selling defoe look how he played when him and berba play together he brings the best out of him but i do think he's running out of time he always hammers it 20 ft over the bar at the moment unless we sign an international quality replacement because guarranted when he leaves us he will start banging in goals especially at man utd it's a difficult one for jol because he sees defoe's qualities in training everyday.one point on ghaly i really dont understand the abuse he get's on here he gives his all for the shirt even 2 teeth a good squad player to have he is only 24 still he does mess up a bit but he also has played good games for us i have seen every game this year whether it be at spurs,tv internet, and he does do a good job for the team.I would like to say how much people's opinion's on didi zokora have changed i remember in january he was getting slaughtered on here and i said then that he was a class player and he is showing that now and he's only going to get better some of you must start showing some faith in what our club is doing and understand that players from abroad take 6 months- 1 year to settle in so less haste with our next signings please people......

Anonymous said...

Mr Daintz,
Categorically disagree with Ghaly being good enough if we are to reach the next level. Maybe as the occasional squad player when we have injuries, but would play Steed on the right lets say in Lennon's absence anyday or even Jenas does a better job on the right. He is not a top 4 team player mate, but then again we're all entitled to our opinion. As for Defoe, I really want him to succeed but looks like he is not enjoying the squad rotation and in my book Berba and Keano are ahead of him any day. Sure anyone will score goals at Man utd IF they get in the team look at the quality of their wingers/playmakers take your pick Ronaldo, Rooney, Giggs, Scholes...However the only player that we truly need a replacement for is Mido as 1 million quid players like Ghaly or Danny Murphy don't make much difference whether they stay or not. Where as when Berba is out we do need a quality foil to hold up the ball.Overall we all agree we are progressing in the right direction though.

Message to Mido - Lose some weight, accept your role (as Berbatov's back-up/cup striker) or pack your bags. We like you when you are good. Junk food habits don't make you so, so lay off the cheeseburgers before you do an Elvis Presley. Defoe - Just pack your bags. Sure, he has pace, but is greedy, selfish, offside too often. Berba and Keane is clearly the choice. Nothing wrong with picking up Tevez if the Hammers go down. Be a great back up to Keane...!!! Ghaly has got a clue, and more than Teemu Tainio IMO. I've been quietly impressed with Ghaly, so leave him alone. Zokora will improve. Huddlestone will be a really good player too, don't forget how young he is in that role, and how much he has accomplished already (for his age/position). We need a quality left midfielder. Steed does not quite cut it, in fact I wanted him off the pitch on Saturday for his contribution. Pedersen??? Please?? And Taylor from Pompey would be a good signing. I'd rather get Healy from Leeds than Ashton...

What do we need to do for this match on Thursday to finally play the way we know we can? I would love to see Ghaly, Taino, Mido and Defoe all get stuck in traffic and miss the match. Hell, put MJ in his old kit and through him on the field.

Lee is thankfully going to be spending his day at the doctor's office. He is the worst pain I have ever had to endure. Can we please get a left back who can play left back? Please?

In December my cousin and me had a bit of a chat with Robbie Jol (MJ's nephew) and I said to him flat out I thought that Ghaly was a panic buys. He disagreed and said that there was great talk of him back in Holland and so they believed he should at spurs. It's been four months since then and still Ghaly has done next to nothing to contribute. I say bring Mendes back, he's been wonderful for Pompey (when he's not being pummeled by Thatch and co.)and I was sad to see him leave. If there is one thing we need, it's a good play maker in the middle like Carrick was for us. We may soon see Zokora become the "maestro" he was in France, but i'd like to see Mendes come and do another stunner like the "goal that wasn't" at Man United. Too bad he's already put out there in the media his distaste for Jol. As for Defoe: If we sell him, it should be for enough money to buy Nani from sporting Lisbon (I watched him the other day. he reminded me alot of lennon only he prefers playing in the middle rather than on the flanks) and a striker who can be counted on to play well when used and not to moan when not used. Difficult to find, but ideally that would ease my mind. Other than that I trust Jol to get the job done. BTW Its looking like spurs are on the up whilst the bleedin arse*al are on the decline. Fifth and possibly fourth? As long as it's not tenth. COME ON YOU SPURSSSS!!!

Nani is never going to join spurs he has already said that we are not big enough for him so that's one roumour we can put to bed. Also how come defoe is always being talked of being sold on here are you people fucking crazy if we sell defoe who are we going to be able to get of the same quality english and doesnt need time to settle and at an age where he has same experience as deofe a definate no no from me it was only 4 months ago since various people on here we saying when keano was injured he aint good enough sell him you have short memories i like the blog's but there are alot of people who post on here that might want to go to the games sometime instead of judging from your armchair's or reading bollox that they put in the daily rags.......

Defoe has had more than enough chances...People feel sorry for him?? Tough..He is not good enough, does not score goals (how many goals has he scored away from home in his career at Spurs)His style of play is limited and at this level it is not acceptable.
At least BMJ is now starting to realise he is a limited player who can score goals against the likes of MK Dons and Andorra..but not much more.

Zokora...can't pass more than 10 yards, can't shoot, can't tackle, he just runs around...to me he is an African Freund..He won't get better.

Robinson..he has cost us points this season due to poor posistioning, for a top flight keeper, he is bodering on David James-esque in some of the naive mistakes he has made.

Jenas - Jeckell(sp?) & Hyde player - when he is running through the middle he is doing what he is should be - othertimes he is woeful, him and Zokora in the midfield I wonder how the ball can get to the strikers at all.

Ghaly - My judgement is out, I think he has room for improvement. Needs to get a brain.

..finally I would like to criticise "Shock Horror" Lennon. He has no brain I'm sure he will get one (hopefully not Defoe's), watching him hang around the halfway line when we are breaking from the back, is like that scene in Forrest Gump "RUN LENNON RUN"
Yes he is quick, yes he is skillful, but he needs to sharpen up on his overall reading of the game to become a great player...he also runs like a cross between penguin and John Inman.

Anonymous said...

African Freund....very good.
My Freund and yours was not that much of a bad thing (apart from the shooting) and still has cult status.

Let's hope Spurs continue the amazing form of premiership clubs in europe thursday night. I believe the sevilla players will feel the pressure more than us. Their reserve keeper who is allegedly playing should be tested at ever opportunity, especially early on.

Here's to a solid and convincing performance from the boys on our biggest night for many a year.
