Tottenham Hotspur: Robbo To Be Benched

England's Number One .... Isn't.

As if you needed them, the Actim stats to tell you, David James is currently the best English goalkeeper in the Premiership.

Ever since Robinson went 'Top Ten' on Stan Boardman's Fabulous Football Funnies Vol #73 DVD with his kicking thin air howler for England there has been an air of vulnerability in-between the Tottenham goalposts.

It would be unfair not to acknowledge that Tottenham have been extraordinarily inconsistent as a squad this season and you might demand what role his defence might play in his defence. But what is getting our goat are the histrionic dives and flaps that are frankly miles away from the ball.

The fallout of benching robbo would be measurable, if only in column inches.
Our pals at The Mirror would conjure up a 'Wantaway Robbo Off To ________' story in less than three pints.

But complacency must be eliminated at White Hart Lane.

Jol has been guilty of responding too slowly to dips in form this season. His endless automatic selection of Davids was greeted with universal incredulity. His substitutions have been generally 20 minutes too late.

Do you think we should bench Robbo?

i couldnt agree more, i cant remember the last time i watched spurs and seen Robbo make a save that wasnt hit directly at him. Give Radek a chance it might buck Robbos ideas up.

COYS

By the way how did we lose that match yesterday

Anonymous said...

I agree, time to give Cerny a go - Robbo seems to have been stung by some kind of World Cup hangover. When Shay Given was called upon yesterday he made 3 or 4 brilliant saves and although I don't blame Robbo for Newcastle's 2nd or 3rd goals he should not have been beaten on his near post from such a tight angle. Letting them back into the game cost us. A spell out will probably help him and I am sure he will comeback better than ever

Anonymous said...

simply - yes. hes in the team on reputation rather than performance. goalie is one position you can rotate. give cerny say 6 games and let robbo get his act together, cos he is still quality, no question.

Anonymous said...

I submitted the same thing to Vital Football last night calling for Cerny to be given a crack in goal.

Good post

Anonymous said...

Cerny is a very good keeper imo. Give him a go.

Anonymous said...

I don't think Robbo can be slated for the performance against Newcastle. His postion for the 1st goal was good although his legs were too open, Dawson in my eyes was responsible as he left the 2 at the far post.

Dawson/Hudd for the second goal, Hudd should have followed martins instead of the ball and Dawson should have anticipated the shot.

Tainio for the 3rd as he didn't track butt into the box although Robbo did come too far out of goal

Anonymous said...

The article couldda had, eh, h?

Anonymous said...

After seeing Given yesterday, and knowing what Robinson used to be like, its definitly time to give Cerny a go.
I think the problem is that Robinson isn't having to fight for a place, show him the competition and he will buck his ideas up.
We call call for Cerny, so why cant Jol see it too??

Sorry 'the article vital couldda had'

I agree about droppin robbo but i also think the sooner we get shot of davenport the better. In a team where few players are comfortable with the ball on their left foot, lee, lennon, ekotto etc. davenport is the worst culprit. How jol can play him on the left side of our central defense is a joke. He totally bricks himself any time the ball is on his left foot, he's an accident waiting to happen. Spurs are fast looking like a team with alot of deadwood. Championship footballers like davenport deserve championship football. I also think daws needs king or he looks average, tainio tries but just ain't good enough and berba is good enough but just doesn't try. If berba covered half the ground jd or rk covered he'd have 20 goals already this season. Get the cheque book out mr levy sharpish. We have the spine of a great team but while we were lucky in the league last season our shortcomings are there for all to see this year. The only bright light has been our good form in europe and the form of chimbo. We have had very lucky draws and average results against poor opponents to get us where we are in the other comps. Lets hope the season gets back on track now. COYS

Would have won 5-1 if the keepers were on opposite sides. Sad to say it, but Robbo is sliding fast Sullivan style. He's on a long contract with a No.2 who is happy to be a back-up....he needs to be pushed and earn his place. Too much complacency and cake-eating going on.

The Money said...

Perhaps a bit harsh, although a shake up is certainly needed. There isn't a keeper in the premiership who could have reacted fast enough to stop the first, only blind luck could have prevented it going in. The second was even more unstoppable, and Tainio was responsible for the third - even i could out pace Butt and I've had two hip replacements. Drop Robbo perhaps, but before the big man does he should drop Teemu, play Hoddlestone as the lynchpin and keane as the attacking midfielder. yeah we'd be frail, but jeez wouldn't we be fun going forward!

Anonymous said...

yep,

iom with most ppl in thinking that robbo should be dropped from the team.

hes not playing well enough and everything that beats the defenders beats him! no chance for the martins goal but overall this season hes been a liability.

time for radek to step in immediatley!!!

Anonymous said...

Hold on Guys, I agree in principle, bur Remember Cerny's howler against Port Vale, when the ball went through his legs, for their opener. Maybe give Ben Alnwick a go

Anonymous said...

Your looking at the wrong person that needs to be replaced...Hans Segers must be held fully responsible for Robinson's inability to come for a cross, the fact that he is constantly beaten from long range, over-zealous kicking, lack of confidence etc. Get rid of Segers and bring in a real Goalkeeping coach.

Anonymous said...

Hans Segers? If that's the case let's find the PE teacher Robbo had at school and duff him up too!

Anonymous said...

Yeah, I'm all in favour of dropping Robbo - it could just snap him out of the funk he's been in since THAT mistake for England. But there's something else that I think is disrupting the team - the thuggish behaviour that a couple of players have brought to the team. I hesitate to say this, but Chimbonda and Zokora, both good players, have shown a weakness for on-field antics and drama that just doesn't do the team any good. Chimbonda's face-off with Nicky Butt yesterday was uncalled for - we were dominating and only needed to continue playing the better football. Instead we were distracted by Chimbonda's unpleasant little drama during which the TV camera's caught him slapping Butt, and I believe there was a to-do in the tunnel as well. All unnecessary, with us well on top and the football doing the talking. Zokora has done similar things, and I think these two need a stern talking-to from Jol before things get out of hand. I suppose its more difficult to control such characters with both the captain (King) and the vice-captain (Keane) out of the side.

Anonymous said...

Whatever happens, Robbo must relinquish that damn armband

Anonymous said...

I think you are all wrong as far as Robbo is concerned . Spurs fans always look for a scapegoat . It was just one of those days . First goal was lucky - second goal a wonder strike that no keeper would have saved . I think we should look at how badly the defenders and midfielders block shots from outside the box . Yesterday was one of those days - but we now have a lot of work to make top 6 and prove that last season was not a one off fuke in the league . I think we have a good squad that is 5th best in the Premiership but with all the cup games etc we may struggle for top 6 . Mind you I am off the old school that I would rather win a cup than finish top 4/6 and win nothing .

Anonymous said...

i agree with the post but i reckon it's not all his fault, there seems to be lack of passion and concentration. the goals we conceded yesterday were silly goals apart from martins lovely shot..we have to put our goals away as we could have scored at least 5 goals yesterday.. any way i would give a chance to ben alnwick he looks very good... come on you spurs..

Do you think that the first Toon goal was a great strike past a supersonic keeper or a botch job from a keeper who is really out of form?

Harry Hotspur said...

I have to agree with the poster who said if we'd had Given we might have won 5-2 or similar.

The crucial aspect to all this blog hot air is what Jol does. He must act in some way, surely.

We can only live in hope that our strikers hit the target more often. But as was said earlier, it does seem these days that if our defenders get beaten then so too is our Keeper.

Aghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Anonymous said...

and i thought i was the only one who had noticed robbo's form. His reaction times (no reference to MArtins goal here - nothing could be done about that) and positioning have both gone down the drain.

Give someone else a try... it might make robbo think to try harder

Robbo needs some time on the pine. Although it makes me sad to say it.

I think we miss Ledley too much, and dare i say it Jenas !

When they are both back and fully fit, with Lennon & Keano then expect us to start picking up the points and charging for the Top 5.

Midfield still needs sorting out though:

Malbranque is a decent player but has to play in the middle.

Huddlestone is great but imo has to be used like Lennon was last season, gradually, as he seems to burn out after 70 mins.

Tainio for his effort is not up to it, he is just a more up-to-date model of Michael Brown.

Zokora has shown glimpses of class but overall has been dissapoting, especially for the rumoured price tag.

Ghaly is another funny signing, although i have to say has impressed me at times but when he goes missing is by far the worst and most dissapointing

Murphy should never have been bought and should be got rid of asap even for free (just like Stalteri)

Davids should be left to get on with his career in the MLS.

Either bring Routledge back and play him or fookin sell him.

Get Reo-Coker in for 3-4m

And a geniuine winger to compliment Lennon. (what 3 years now and still we are waiting) ??

And WHAT has happenend to Mido ?

Areas to address are CB cover, imo our priority. (Curtis Davies please NOT Anton Ferdinand)

Then a Proper Left footed winger. (ANYONE but Stewart Fucking Downing)

And then a decent Left Back in the mould of a Gabriel Heinze (yes please)

And if there are any other bargain buys to be had, then pick them up too.

Buys like Lennon, Huddlestone, Robbo - for 1-2m

We are still going in the right direction, and come may i'm sure we will be happy with our top 5 finish and our newly aquired silverware !!

Cerny/Alnwick should start our cups games from now on til Robbo (still quality) has lost some lbs and got his form back.

Remember form is temporary but class is permanent.

Up the Spurs

Park Lane Rules !

Anonymous said...

Yep would have to agree that Cerny should be given a chance. Would at least give Robinson a bit of notice.

Totally gutted about yesterday. maybe we should buy Given rather than a new winger.

how many times has he been beaten by 25-30-35-40 yarders this season... i thought he should of been benched a couple of months ago

wise guy you are. what do you propose? we sell berba? there's a thought. I'll talk to Mourinho and he'll give us sheva in exchange! you are pathetic! do you know what football is? do you know what is playing or all you know is running? I've seen too much running in defoe and lennon getting us nothing. berba is top class and I'm very glad he doesn't yield to this nonsense of running and tackling endlessly which leads to diving and hurting. but maybe your wishes will be heard and berba will leave in the summer if Spurs will get zero trophies and Prem midtable ranking. he's too good for this team anyway!

Anonymous said...

ive been saying this for a while, he had a nghtmare in germany and he hasnt really improved since.

Anonymous said...

Spider pimp rocks!

Back off The Berba! The guy is total class and difficult to get the ball off...

Our midfield is where the 'problems' lie.

right robbo isn't a bad keeper, he needs a rest, hes played every min of action (other than 2 cc games) since the world cup, everyone else who went to the world cup has had a rest, If i was Jol i would rest him for the nxt few weeks, And come out and explain why he has rested him! As robbo is ENGLANDS NUMBER ONE

Anonymous said...

Robbo is fat, crap n slow he should've been dropped long time ago. He's had a nightmare all season, he's hasn't come close to saving any of the goals we conceded this season.

Englands no1 my ass!!!

Anonymous said...

We all no robbo is a good keeper but something is difantley wrong at the moment, Personally i think it could be our goalkeeping coach HANS SAGERS, he was never a good keeper when he was playing now hes a coach think it might be worth looking at getting somebody else in.

Anonymous said...

Forget, the last few matches, Robinson has some major defficiencies in his game:-

1) His ball distribution is awful, holds onto the ball to long then has to kick it giving it away.

2) He hardly ever comes for crosses.

I like Cerny, and think it's time he was given a go.

Wenger and Mourinho were crap footballer but are great coaches.

I don't think the problem lies with Hans Segermagedrive but with Robbo's confidence, the crap defending, loss of Ledley and the fact Englunds Numba 1 seems to have used up all them McDonalds 'buy 1 get 4 free' vouchers their handing out in the sun.

Maybe we should get Ray Clemence back at Spurs?
Although i understand he's got prostate cancer ? get well soon.

To the tune of Kasabian:

Shoot Stalteri, Shoot Shoot Stalteri.....Ledley's King & Henry's a Queen

Anonymous said...

Someone earlier got slated for bringing hans segers into this, but i have to agree that i think he may be some of the problem. Our last two keepers before robbo (sullivan & keller) both started well before gradually getting worse. Same seems to be happening with robbo, so perhaps it is poor coaching that leads to a gradual decline??

Anonymous said...

I don't think the coaching is to overlooked at all...
In fact as the keepers are coached in some respects separately from the rest of the lads it is vital that it's being done right.

Anonymous said...

Completely in agreement with most of the other 41 comments. There is hardly a goal we have conceded all season and God knows there have been enough of them, where I have not wondered if he could/should have done better. He is costing us a goal a game.

I always wondered why we picked him up realtively cheaply and now we know the reason. He has stood out because there is such a dearth of decent keepers in this country, foreign or otherwise but it is clear he now needs a spell in the reserves to see if he can get back to an acceptable standard.

Balls blasted through him, any long range effort not within a foot of him flying in and as for those stupid stupid punts upfield.

If Jol has any sense, or balls, he would give him a miss for a few weeks (together with a couple of others) and also tell him to forget the vice captaincy.

Anonymous said...

OMFG i have been saying this repeatidly on so many sites for MONTHS now. this is the first post i actually agree with HarryH. shame you are as slow as jol at discovering this fact... robbo takes his place for granted, he is moving slower, and lets in more long range efforts then the entire list of sunday league goalkeepers put together. Robbo needs to be dropped for the good of spurs and england

Anonymous said...

So you haven't agree with any other posts on this site apart from today. Are you a Spurs fan?

Anonymous said...

Typical isn't it. First we had a solid defence but the midfield wasn't right and we couldn't score. Now it is coming together up front and we are putting the goals in but the defence has fallen apart. Robbo looks very flaky at the moment. Paul you need medical help , you have some kind of disease that makes people hoof the ball straight back to the oppo. Let's face it though , what we really need is Ledley back, then Dawson will perk up, Chimbonda is playing great all ready, Lee is Ok, better than Ekotto anyway. Things can only get better when we have Keane and Jenas back on a regular basis. Too late for top 6 but a cup win is a possibility.

Anonymous said...

Your not normally right Harry but for once you've hit the nail on the head. Robbo should go to specsavers cos he's let more goals in from outside the area than I've had hot dinners. Robbo of last year would of saved two of those goals yesterday, but he fills me with no confidence what so ever.

Anonymous said...

I'm always right, this is just the first time you've seen sense...

Anonymous said...

how can you captain a team from within the box? Sorry, thats just plain stupid. We have consistently lacked leadership when it has counted this season. We havent kept a clean sheet in months, and we have played some pretty ordinary football teams in that time, newcastle included. Yesterday was a disgrace, pure and simple. The players lack desire and the killer instict, and are mostly front runners. I am making the trek wednesday night, but i fear we may well be turned over after sundays morale killing disgrace. Cerny was bad vs port vale, but robbo needs some time out of the limelight. As for davenport... hes not a footballers a_s_h_l_. Sorry son, but you arent up to it.

Anonymous said...

Not sure about dropping Robbo, I think he will get his confidence back when Ledley returns. What we really need is a quality central defender to partner Ledley and have Dawson coming in if one of the two gets injured. Dawson is quality but when hes with Davenport they are both too inexperienced. I think Distan from Man City is the answer. I really hope we dont buy Anton Ferdinand. And when are we going to start converting our chances in fromt of goal. When Arsenal beat Liverpool in the Carling Cup 6-3 they only had something like 7 or 8 chances and scored 6 times. We have to have 7-8 chances to score once.

Anonymous said...

On sunday and for the last few weeks ive been saying Robbo needs tobe dropped. But ive been thinking why kick a man when hes down. If us lot in the park lane stop singing robbo will know how spurs fans feel and how much it hurts. Let him him prove how good he is and get the crowd singing englands no 1 in full voice.. but only when he proves it.

What a bunch of typically fickle ignorant muppets the vast majority of you are. Drop the best 'keeper we've had since Clemence for a very average ageing 'keeper that is the definition of goalkeeping cover? He conceded the goals because he's arrogant, over-confident? What a load of ignorant bollocks from w*nkers who have probably never been to the Lane or played in goal. What about the shite that is YP Lee or Davenport's woeful inadequacy, especially compared to Ledley? Or the fact that like it or not, we have been the victims of more than our fair share of wondergoals this season. I didn't think much of the goalkeeping for Campo's potshot earlier in the season, but suggesting he's done for club and country is ridiculous.

F*ck off to the Emirates where you belong, if you're too blind to see a writer pathetically desperate enough to attempt to stimulate moronic debate on his shitty site by writing such utter pitiful crap.

Spurs actually going into a game all guns blazing. Nto letting up when we have the lead for one and continuing to pile forward.

Brilliant. Want we have wanted for months.

And do you know what, we looked shithot going forward.

Cant really fault our game on Sunday to be honest. A fluke result against the run of play. It happens.

ignoring Sundays result, our big issue?? We cant defend for shit. That includes Robbo but also the 10 outfield players.

I suggest Jol gets in a decent defensive coach.

outs: davenport, lee, ekoto, taino, gardner, mido,

no-one is saying drop robbo because hes useless, the blog is merely suggesting he needs a rest. let's face it, he played much better last season.
i think you're in the minority suggesting he doesn't need to be benched for a while.
no-one is disputing his quality, but he's not demonstrating why he should be in the team at present. he is suffering from complacency and a lack of competition would be my bet.
now fuck off to bed and stop ranting about fickle this, fickle that and learn to accept more than one point of view. twat.

Anonymous said...

Yeah drop him. Infact f*ck it let's sell him !! The amount of saves Robbo pulled off last season to win us games was unquestionable..Now he's having a slight dip in form we should drop him for Cerny? A keeper that A: Has hardly ever worn our colours and B: Nobody knows how f*cking good he actually is..I can see why Tottenham fans are called the most fickle fans about when i read total bullshit from some of the comments on here !
