As soon as Fergie came out saying 'Spurs are going to sign Bale' it became obvious he'll be going to United. Why would Fergie bother saying anything if he didn't think it would help ManU's cause?
Unless I'm misreading SAF, he came accross as fed up with the situation.
Referring to Bale as 'the boy' isn't exactly reverential, and why would a manager who's achieved so much cow tow to a 17 yr old and is agents anyway?
