We're Going Backwards At White Hart Lane

Martin Jol - "...a few players looked tired."

Paul Robinson - "I thought it was a backward step, Manchester United are Tottenham's rivals and if we want to break into that top-four group, we shouldn't be selling to that top-four group."

Keith Lamb - "They have not made a £10m bid for Stewart and would be wasting their time if they did. Steve Gibson (Boro's chairman) and I are appalled at the way Tottenham conduct their business. "

Harry Hotspur - "This lot need to get their act together. Don't give me that we're only three games in spiel. We all came into this season looking at UEFA for now, setting out to earn CL by the close of business. As of 26.08.06, Ars*enal look aspirational! With their slick passing game and big, fancy, shiny stadium we look lightyears behind them.I love Tottenham but I am not some labotomised zombie who is prepared to tolerate the 5th rate rubbish as served up against Bolton and now Everton.

I'll spell it out for you - we're going backwards. Get behind the lads? I have done every game since I was a kid and I'll continue to do so whilst I draw breath. But that does not negate my unswerving right to let off steam when faced with the unmitigated sh*te served up by this brigade of overpaid, workshy, spineless perfumed ponces that have the audacity to wear our shirt.

I tell you, if I was running THFC I would have all those lavish motors that gleam and bask across the West Stand car park scrapped into crushed metal squares and let these superstars get the bl**dy bus home!"

I have followed Tottenham now for 45 years. It is always the same false hope. Some of the players are just NOT performing on the pitch. Jenas is a good player but has gone missing this season. The forward line have scored 1 goal between 3 Internationals players. Why is Robbie Keane taking corners etc, we need him in the box to snipe goals. Mido is a big loss. The whole team looks unbalanced, and I am afraid that MJ is getting his tactics wrong. Where have the left sided players like Reto Ziegler gone??? Lee was better at left back. Davids should play middle of mid field.Robinson looks unsure in goal this year. During pre season Cerny looked stronger.Davenport is not up to Premership standard yet. All in all we are much waeker than last year and I cannot understand for the life of me why Tottenham do not buy a player who wants to play for us.All we read about are the nearly buys. I believe this season will put us backwards not forwards.

I think that this is going to be another season of transition. The sale of carrick has had a bigger effect than we would have realised. In have come Ekoto, Zokora, Berbatov, and also others with no prem experience in Davenport and Huddlestone, and Lee playing in a different position. Add to that trying to adjust without Carrick, and the injury to King, it all equals transition. We're gonna need to have lots of patience this season, I can only see mid-table if we are lucky, depends on the transfer window.

According to the our club's website on Friday:

"Dimitar Berbatov and Jermaine Jenas are injury concerns for Saturday's home clash against Everton - although boss Martin Jol is hopeful both will pull through.

The goalscorers against Sheffield United picked up knocks in that 2-0 Premiership victory at the Lane on Tuesday night.

Boss Martin Jol reported on Thursday. “Dimitar took a knock on his ankle, hopefully he’ll be fit, but we will see tomorrow. JJ didn’t train today because he had a problem with his toe, hopefully he’ll be fit for Saturday as well.”

Since the debarcle performance against Everton, Jol has since reportably said that some of the players were looking tired. I'm not sure if this was the real reason.

Tainio was clearly not fit and it showed, not his usual action man performance. When he is fit he is a very good player (but not a winger who gets down the wing and cross balls into the box - which is why we are trying to sign Downing orHatem Ben Arfa - 19 yrs old- from Lyon.) However, Tainio cannot seem to remain fit for two or three consecutive games. We off loaded Reid precisely because of fitness issues.

Berbatov hardly won the ball against Yobo, because he was out jumped the whole time. But he hardly jumped at all- clearly his ankle problem was still an issue!!

Jenas - Prehaps his toe injury was still troubling him! But, what does he really do at times? He is a hit and miss player, one on hand he can go past players at will and score goals, on the other hand can seem rather ordinary. On Saturday, he seemed to do a lot of running without contributing to anything that might lead to a goal. He must improve his consistency!!

Turning to Davenport - He is not really good enough for this level of football. We need Ledley King back, or a fit Gardner (at least he was a sub), or to buy an experienced centre back.

The only players who produced anything decent were Dawson, Assou-Ekotto, Davids and Lennon (Lennon could have done better, but was heavily marked.

Zokora - Is also concerning me. He appears to be strugling with the pace required, in that he is strolling around at the moment. Jol is aware of this, and explains why he was sub on Saturday and against Sheff Utd, but how much time can we give him? He was meant to be Carrick's replacement!!

Also I agree with the earlier comment "Why is Robbie Keane taking corners etc, we need him in the box to snipe goals." Carrick used ton take them, but we must find some else other than Keane to take them!

Why the hell did we sign Berbatov when we could have got Andy Johnson for less.

reading your little post, i think we can all see why you are not running spurs.

I agr we look to be going backwards at the moment. Lets hope things improve over the coming week. I have been disappointed to say the least at the way we have capitulated against more physical teams. We need to get stronger in mid field. I agree Jenas has gone missing and where is Routledge??

Totally agree me1961, I have been reading almost the identical article on another site earlier, the guy that writes this fickle tripe thinks that he is a Tottenham supporter, news! he ain't, no-one can call themselves a Tottenham supporter and do a hatchet job like this...there are ways to put an article and this moron can only do it one way...the wrong way!!

4th striker should be a PRIORITY!
Our lack of a 4th striker (Barney doesn't count) cost us CL spot last season.
If Berby was carrying knock then could have played the 4th.
What if Berby was to get crocked??
Defoe and Keano up front again with no aerial threat??
Look at how many strikers the spammers have.
We are still only 3 games in and it is not the best of starts but lets not get carried away.
The european tour has not begun yet and already we have boo boys appearing.
Commoli,Levy,Jol.....transfer window shuts on thursday! We need a right back,a left winger,a targetman to cover for Berby AT THE VERY LEAST!
I think 6th place finish but watch out for Villa

Who is this Harry Hotspur?

This guy makes supporting Spurs hard work, with fans like him we will be a laughing stock amongst rival fans, he and so called fans like him are the reason Spurs fans are called fickle, we are 3 games in so don't take any notice of this half wit, this is a minor hickup and will right itself soon, the next two weeks out will help and hopefully we will make a couple of good signings before Thursday.

Harry Hotspur! a total and utter embarressment to true Spurs fans.

fari enough we're only 3 game sin but if ur not going to play well now then how on earth is it gonna get any better. i feel we are worse off than last year because of the expectation which we have failed to live up to in the transfer market. we clearly need a left winger and a right back yet we still haven't bought anyone for these positions. carrick is missed cos jenas is shite and cannot play his role or lead the middle of the park.

Anonymous said...

you fickle w*nkers,
2 losses and you think we are in the shithole.Last season we went on runs without a win and still finished 5th.
I think we need to sign 2 more strikers, especially with the european schedule as i feel 4 is not enough. Look what happened at the world cup, 2 crocked players, a toddler and a beanpole up front. And that was just for a few games. Try doing that in what can be a 50+ game season if expectations are met in the cups.
STOP WHINING

I agree that it has been a pretty poor start but for goodness sake, we really must have some of the most reactionary fans of any club in the 4 divisions. I hesitate to say fickle because that would imply that their loyalty is easily tested. I think that we have some of the most loyal fans in the country but we must keep the faith. The biggest test of how far the current regime can take us will be tested by the fans. If the fans stick behind Jol and the board then we will see further progress. If we turn on them too quickly it would mean more changes, more setbacks and more seasons of 'transition'.

Anonymous said...

I agree that Carrick is being missed at the moment, because his replacement Zokora has not had the immediate impact which we were all hoping for.

Zokora is taking time to adapt to the pace required for premiership games. Jol has said that our new players must adapt to the premiership pace required and quickly. Hopefully some advice from Jol and others in training, and more games will sort that out.

Yes,thats exactly right and it was exactly that way under Sugar. The differcne being that under Sugar Spurs actually bid for players they knew they ad no chance in hell of getting. Now,the club leaks who they may be targetting so that the papers can manufacture stories. Same old--same old

so far this season there have only been 3 matches we can't judge our team so far and now at least it can only get better.Berbatov looks fantastic and if we get some midfield service for him he'll score 20 goals this season.WE must try to buy downing and chimbonda before the end of the transfer market as tanio isnt good enough likewise y.p lee, i still believe we can make the c.l this season we just have 2 be patient

Anonymous said...

Maybe Harry's reaction is a bit knee jerk but he has a point. All this "we're only 3 games in", "its a blip" stuff is irrelevant. Thats 6 points dropped. How many points did we miss out on CL football by last season? The season before, how many points did we miss out on UEFA by? I can't see us ending our hoodoo with Chelsea this season. I don't see us turning over the scum even though they're not firing. Liverpool are looking better this season than last to me, and I don't even want to think about Man U. Sop the Bolton's and Evertons are the games we cannot afford to drop points on. I don't want to be spouting "If onlys" at the end of the season having missed out on CL football by a couple of points again!!!

Anonymous said...

the simple solution now is not to think what if but not to drop points

7 29 here anything ivread on here has been utter bollocks u clearly arent even a spurs supporter u just write an article u know will rile real fans to get reaction. for that i think u are a cunt. we did well last season because 1. we were relatively lucky with injuries 2. several players had exceptional seasons ie robbo and 3. we seemed to play teams at the right time when they were missing players/ on a bad run of form. we can still finish in the top four if we make a signing or two and are kicked into gear by the last 2 defeats. id suggest to you that u think harder about spouting bollocks all over your crap website. u clearly dont play football and have probably been watching it for less than 5 years. so in conclusion fuck you and your entire family. yours sincerely Martin Jol.

With you there, it'll be interesting to know how many who think this article is a load of unloyal piss are sitting in a pub watching us at the end of the season bemoaning being 6 points behind the arse or 6 points shy of a place in europe.

We chucked away more points in the last 8 minutes of games than any other team in the league last season and we were going nuts that we threw the points away.

Now we're supposed to have an improved squad and we're chucking the towel in before half time!

We are in that respect, 'going backwards'. So to all the big boy staunch fans coming on here perhaps a deep breathe and DON'T SHOOT THE MESSENGER?

Not sure about Harry Hotspur I think he is more of a Harry Monk ..... Yes yesterday was a pile of shite and we were clueless but take away the 3 defensive errors by Davenport ,ie againts Bolton and both yesterday and we would probably have only conceeded one goal in the 3 games... Hurry back King is all I can say.... Last season we played just as bad first half and early second but going into the last 15 mins we managed to salvage many a game and get 3 points playing nearly as bad... the only difference this year is that King is not there to steady the ship at the back...

what an absolute load of bollocks on this site. imo the solution is simple - drop the 11 who played saturday and replace them.

let me take you back about 8 years when spurs entertained manure at the lane. new years day, live on sky. we had loads of injuries, suspensions etc and fielded a virtual reserve side. noone gave us a prayer. the result? thrashed em off the park 4-1 and man of the match was darren caskey, remember him?

the moral of the story? the team was made up of reservists and some time players, who had no airs or graces and didnt believe the hype.

a team of grafters who loved playing for spurs rather than internationals on 40k a week who cant play a decent game 2 games on the spin.

team for manure next up -

cerny
stalteri gardner dawson lee routledge ghaly huddlestone ziegler
defoe barnard.

extreme maybe, but is meant to put a point across only.

sorry if you missed my point.

of course all genuine suppoorters will be less than happy with the start, but panicking and insults really never move anything forward positively and i guess we all want that.

to me it is now down to management, no doubt we have improved the squad not by much but its better than last year (left back!)...just now down to the manager to get the best from those available (SVEN??!!) and now a simple start will be to play players in their natural positions starting with Davids...whose natural position these days is on the bench...and for god sake give Zieglar a go on the left..and pick Zokora, pay 8 mill because you think somebody is good enough then drop him straight away...Davids is the road block, simple to see.

maybe we will get genuine width and pace on the left, if we get that then we have NO excuses left..

I think we had a great season last season. Finishing fifth was a great accomplishment. I think we are a good team who has lost their captain & playmaker, and have added a few new players who have no premiership experience. I do think we will find our way, it may take some time. There will be ups and downs. Everton, and maybe the next month will be rocky. I think we will finish about 10th this year. Saw Arsenal play and they are still far superior to Spurs. The system we played on Saturday was as much to blame as the lame performance from some players .
Why did we persist in crossing from very deep positions and giving our forwards no chance , some good work by Lennon was spoilt because he insisted in cutting in rather than going around the outside of the defender and crossing .

Why jump on Harry Hotspur, who is just trying to tell it the way he sees the situation? For that matter, are we bound to ignore problems with the team - and /or management- wherever we finish up? I've supported the Spurs for most of my 76 years, tho from overseas for the last 48...so please don't label me a fickle fan!
Doesn't Jol want to admit for his share of the blame for poor performance?
He didn't hesitate to publicly criticize Lennon before the Everton game, now maybe he should step up and admit to his own mistakes. Just as Lennon may not yet be in Gerrard's class, so Jol is not yet in Wenger's (ugh) Ferguson's, Mourinho's or even Benitez' class. He has a lot to learn, methinks.

Anonymous said...

Martin Jol must learn to use his squad, when the likes of Jenas has a toe injury, Berbatov an ankle problem, and Tainaio who can not play two games in a row.

What is the point of having Ziegler, Ghaly, Huddlestone, Routlege, and Murphy, if he is not going to use any of them?

NO FIGHTING SPIRIT - THAT'S ALL !
Jol says the team look tired? That is an understatement!
The blame for a very bad start of the season is very simple: Spurs have not showed any fighting spiri, created just not enough and played too slow, too much back and side passes (Davenport play like this all the time, he is just not good enough) - no commitment from the team at all.
And who is to blame - only MARTIN JOL. He must take the responsibility for not pushing the team to fight.
Look at all other teams in the Premiership - they fight.
Please Spurs - show a little attitude !

Anonymous said...

I note with disappointment that some of you so called supporters like to slag off other supporters for making their point. The team at the moment is very unbalanced and is like that for a while.Hopefully it will turn around but with Man U and Liverpool coming up I cannot see the present team taking anything from these games. Perhaps then we will all think in terms of crisis.I agree that the spirit seems low and certain players are just not performing on the pitch where it actually matters.

Anonymous said...

Lets look at things a bit calmer this morning. The team in unbalanced yes- so why??? If I was an opposing manager I would do the following- cut the supply to Lennon, man mark the midfield players stopping them coming forward, and attack down spurs left flank. U will note that most goals come from this side. The reason, Spurs are unbalanced on the left side.I hope MJ cops on soon and we get back to winning ways, otherwise we will achieve nothing.I think the original comments from Harry Hotspur are being tak3en out of context. Of course the CLUB has moved forward, but the team has gone backwards from last year and that is MY opinion at this stage.

Anonymous said...

I find it stunning that after a massive improvemnt last season we are already bleating about a bad start with key players changed, Carrick wanted to go so should we loose 18 million a la campbell? We made good purchases at sensible prices and we are slowly building the club from the back to the front.

People say spurs fans are fickle becuase of people like the ones posting here.

False dawn meant we finished 5th last year !! Wake up, support Jol and be patient , only chelsea can buy enough players to chnage it overnight

Anonymous said...

i cant believe i will say this, but even gardner plays better than davenport. And where is Stalteri? he was finally adapting last season only to be placed on the bench for most of this season. Davids is a central midfield player yet we play him on the left? I will admit it has been the long break but we need to clean up our act! A home loss to Everton since 1985 suggests this! However i believe this will be a lesson for the lads. This week against Man United, a win would put them back on track.... Come On the Yid Army!

Patience boys just rmember carrick took half a season before he started to impress!!

Anonymous said...

I've been a spurs supporter for the past 16 years. I have to say that our performance against a ten man everton side is simply unacceptable. It is not the result that anger me, it is the way which we give the game away to a ten man team and a lack of hunger and ambition shown by our team that really disappoint me. Our team has no creativity at all and MJ clearly got his tactic wrong on this occassion.
I believe that he had played players out of position which is clear for all to see. He has also failed to utilise or rotate the squad effectively and efficiently.
Clearly Tainio is not fully fit as he's not his usual self doing all the hard work on that day. So why play him when he's not fit??
Left Midfield:
How about giving players like Routledge and Ziegler a chance. I remember watching Routledge play for portsmouth last season on the left wing and creating chances for them, not to mention a few assist. So why not play him there and stop lamenting the lack of width by constantly playing natural central midfielders(eg.davids, tainio) out of position on the left. Ziegler is another left sided player who is naturally left-footed and possess good cross ability. Why is he not given a chance on the left. I feel that they should at least warrant a place on the bench if they deemed not good enough to start.
Central Midfield:
Jenas is a player with great technique and pace and good getting forward but he's too inconsistent and he clearly lacks vision for an attacking midfield/playmaker. How many times have we seen him sent a long through ball for our forward like MC used to do for us on numerous occassions last season. That is what we badly missed. Danny Murphy is another creative player who has been under-utilised since his move to our team. He haven't been given a chance to shine in his favoured central midfield role yet. He is also a dead ball specialist who is an excellent corner and freekick taker. Remember his 8 assists for Darren Bent in the early part of last season. He cant lost his vision overnight. I'm sure he'll shine for us if given an opportunity.
I hope MJ will give the above-mentioned players a fair share of chance for the coming months. If they fail to shine then ship them out. It's better than freezing them without giving them an opportunity to shine.

I agreed with the article. Call me fickle or whatever you like but there are comments here that pretend that signing a left-winger and a right-back will turn us into a top 4 side.

We only lost 9 times last season, now we've lost twice in our first 3. Unless we go on a massive unbeaten run, CL football for all our hopes and dreams is just not looking likely is it. What's got people even more worried is the worst performance in MJ's reign.

MJ is bottling the big decisions. Davids is nowhere near Premier standard and either Defoe should play or be sold. Why does Terry Dixon get into a reasonable international squad (RoI)but does not get a sniff at Tottenham? I say give Ghaly a run in middle if midfield and buy an experienced central defender to cover for King and Dawson.King is injury prone and all the stats show that we concede when he is out.

Lets not start getting on the backs of the team we should be behind them. Yes Davenport is not up to standard, he is to indicisive. Teemu is clearly not fit he controlled the game against sheff utd but only played well for 40 mins against everton. JJ is unsure of where he should be playing he clearly has ability and class but needs to be the attacking midfielder not the holding one. Aaron Lennon is still learning the game and needs to making the runs that berbatov made on saturday e.g into the corners and behind the left back rather than coming short to get the ball. and as for Robbie Keane the sooner he gets dropped to the bench and Defoe starts the better yes he had a good season last year but lets not kid ourselves his first touch is appalling and if he put as much effort into his football as he does his standing around moaning at people with his arms in the air the better off spurs will be. Now for the positives in Defoe we have the best natural finisher in football he is keen hungry and always wants the ball he should start every game, Robison is the best keeper in the premier league yes he had a shaky world cup but that is in the past, Ekoto is a good left back, hard working ball winning, good passer with alot more to come i feel. Davids works his socks off every game and may not be the world force he once was but if every player played with the effort he did on saturday we would have beaten everton. Well there you go thats my opinion yes i have had a moan but I was still at the lane in the 92nd min on saturday and still cheering them on so lets all get behind the team as im sure we will come good soon.

Lets put things into perspective a bit lads. The thing is up till now we have had a fairy tale beginning to MJ's new bright era at Spurs, which led us to even compare him to Bill Nicholson! The reason for this is the man has done what no other could for a long long time and got us into Europe and a respectable 5th place finish. Now we have had 2 very painfully bad games admitedly when we were all expecting even better things from last year. Now lets not write him off yet!...the man deserves time. It happens often good managers take time to learn from mistakes before they get it right. Look at Sir Alex Ferguson, was on the verge of being sacked before he got it right for united all those years ago. Even Moyes stumbled last season after getting Everton in the Champions league but looks like he may have fixed things for em again. Clearly there are a few strange decisions going on and many players dont look up to it eg Davids and Jenas partnership, strange bench selections, lack of squad rotation when players are off form, Davenport looking shaky at the back, Huddles not being groomed to replace Carrick, new signings not doing it yet as well as the left side problem and topped by an overwhelming lack of creativity anywhere. Even though Ive never fancied Davids and Jenas together, I can not work out why he doesn't give Huddles, Murphy, Routledge or Ghaly a ago when the midfield is playing shyte, this is beyond me. But all the other things we can see wrong, although we suspected they could be problems, have now become even more transparent and maybe its a good thing that these problems have shown up now while we still have a chance to sign that left sided player, decent RB, back up CB and striker etc. And MJ needs to get real and tough and drop those who are not performing, and more than ever show his managerial skills by motivating a clearly demoralised team to pick themselves up and bring last seasons lion-esque spirit back! However please remember for a guy who had very little managerial experience apart from a little stint in the Eredivisie, he has done very well in a very short time. So lets keep faith and hope he becomes that legend he looked like becoming last season by learning from his and the teams mistakes and turn things around. But remember its a learning curve for the big man too and Spurs is not the easiest place to attract the best players in the world yet until we start winning things, despite us all loving the club to bits and would all give our right nuts to play for the club ourselves lol! BTW good points Harry and is also very worrying that Jol is saying we looked "tired" especially when Everton had less time than us to recover from midweek. But is at least one season away before we should start to doubt whether MJ is the right man to bring the club forward IMO.

We played a lot of crap footbal last season and got through on grit and determination. We dont pass and move the ball like even some of the average sides do in the prem.Until we sort this out,we will never break into the top 4.Half our players wont get into the top 4 sides.Thats says it all.In addition, to those who are having a moan about people complaining, I believe they have every right to complain if they loose meekly to a poor Everton side playing with 10 men.We spend good money on Season tickets and its only natural for people to be frustated especially having spent good money.Half the side are not good enough to wear the shirt and the biggest con of all is Jenas who is basically an average player who got carried by Carrick last season. Its not their fault but the buck ends with those wasting money on poor players.I have been saying it since last seson,Performance wise, WE ARE NOT AS GOOD AS PEOPLE MAKE OUT.Some say it was coming and our luck has run out.Blackburn ACTUALLY WON more games than us in finishing 6th last season, spent less money and played the more attractive football. So its not always about money but how well its spent.THAST THE FACT!!Having said all this, I'll be the first on the train to Manure in 2 weeks.COYS!!

I have just read someone say Jenas has great technique..
I havent laughed so much in ages.Great engine yes, but great technique, dont make me laugh. No wonder we are in the doldrums when our supporters are singing the praises on one of the worst midfield signing I have seen at Spurs in Years.

Anon 3.31pm lol, thats exactly the same message I said to all the people who were calling me and others who were complaining about Jenas and Davids fickle. My message is not telling people not to complain, because I am as pissed off as anyone right now, and can see lots of things wrong. Im just saying lets not get too down and have faith that MJ will realise his mistakes and turn it around. After all I still love the bloke for bringing back European football and hope for a bright future last season, after another dudd manager in Santini completely cocked it up again and embarrasingly decided he didn't want the job anymore like he was above us!...wanker. So I often complain and discuss certain tactical decisions on these blogs which are in effect MJ's decision, but reserve too much judgement on him as he did many good things at the beginning of his relationship with the super Spurs club and most of his time here, very much like a marriage. Like a wife who will make a few silly mistakes now and again except you do not talk about divorce unless the problems persist and the relationship is in serious trouble like relegation...then we can start talking about divorce!...but we are not there yet, it's early days and although cannot see us being a top 4 side right now, am sure we will not going to be a relegation fighting side either.

I am glad the forum is now getting positive in what is being said. Of course we cannot panic as yet. Everyone is disappointed and frustrated, but I am confident MJ will pull it together. The season start has been strange not only for us but for other clubs as well.Lets hope we get a few decent signings or at least get the best from the players we have.As supporters lets stay confident and positive and believe. If we are stay positive then positive things will happen.

roll on the next game - win lose or draw, at least we will have something new to talk about.

Come on admit it. Its nice to be back to normal.

With us finsishing last season in a unprecendented 5th following a season long CL spot dogfight I woas seriously worried we were in a position whereby a decent preseasons spending would cement our place as contenders. THAT ISNT WHAT I SUPPORT SPURS FOR! I want midtable mediocrity.

I want defeats at home against 10 men opponent. True old school Spurs stupidity.

Martin Jol knows this too. This is why Martin Jol sold our best player and has stubbornly refused to strengthen any areas of the pitch we were lacking. This is why Bg Mart insists on playing central midfielders on the wing. We NEED humiliation. God Save Martin Jol!

I love Martin Jol, Martin jol lobe me....

have followed tottenham for one year. but as a new fan, i see some trends, chelsea, man utd, arsenal and liverpool buy, everyone else gets what's left over.
if all the hype about tottenham is true, then why does it take so much to convince players to join.
as a new spurs fan, i want to follow a winner, but it's difficult supporting a club that thinks a top 6 finish is a success.

Anonymous said...

Lets be honest - last year we finished 5th and there were a number of games we were lucky to win / draw - Wigan , WBA , Bolton , Balckburn to name just 4 . Any team that loses at Grimsby , Leicester and WBA can not be the finished article . It is a fine line between success and failure . At present we have not found a system to play without Carrick . Those who knock Jenas get off his back he is the only midfield player who can score goals . I was surprised Jol bought Zakora when you have Tainio , Davis , Huddlestone who can play in the middle and we cry out for a left sided player . I think we will struggle to finish 5th this year - the start was crucial and with Man Utd and Liverpool coming up we could be playing catch up .

Do you think we actually have a transfer policy?

As far as I can tell we only ever seem to sign left backs and central midfielders.

Surely if I can see the weakness in this policy, Jol/Comolli/Levy should be able to too?

We could have challenged for top 4 this year with some astute transfer market dealing.

But we seem to be weaker. That is quite a feat.

Anonymous said...

Oh and repeat after me

Zokora, Zokora, Zokora

There is just one A.

its not Zakora , Zokaro , Zokara

Zokora.

And yes he is another central midfielder. He will be ready for Pompey by Xmas.

Anonymous said...

Personally I have my fingers crossed we sign central midfield player Baptista as cover for Tainio, Jenas, Davids, Huddlestone, Murphy, Zokora and Ghali.

We are looking weak in central midfield.

And hopefully another leftback.

A balanced side is hugely overrated.

odi - do you really think signing baptista at 13.5m will be as COVER for the players you just mentioned?!
wake up and smell the coffee

Good news at last regarding Mido.I think we all have to be patient until the closing deadline on Thursday.I believe in MJ.

Anonymous said...

I am personally very happy. This now completes our strike force, gives us a different option in tough games and covers us incase of Berby injury and also keeps Berby on his toes so he does not get complacent. Also he is a proven player across Europe and in the prem where he scored a good few for us last season. After he went to the ANC we clearly missed him, and lost a lot more games without him. His passion you cannot buy, and hopefully he ends his nomadic days and finally settles down here like Robbie Keane did after his many moves!
Mido is also a vital part of that strong Spurs core through the middle that we had last season. When Ledley is back, the only part that will be missing is Carrick.

Bit worried about spending 13.5 million on Julio Baptista. I do not follow La Liga enough to know much about him apart from he has a reputation as "the beast", but thought thats why we spent 8+ million on Zokora also!. Did he perform well for Madrid last season and was he first choice every game? is this just a pathetic ploy to keep the Spurs fans happy? because an expensive Real Madrid reject does not neccesarily turn me on. A frank Ribery, Van Der Vaart or Wes Shneider type signing would though, because they will bring creativity, which is the thing we really are missing! If Baptisita is really that good then sign him, but we should not just sign him just because Arsenal once wanted him, because they also once wanted Jenas!, and this signing so soon would not undermine/knock the confidence of Zokora. But cannot see us paying that much on another defensive midfielder. Also a swap for Mido and Lee-Pyo IMO is good business, as Pyo is a good player but at 29 years old, will never cut it at the top of the prem due to lack of strength, not good when the going gets tough. I can see a compromise being reached for Chimbonda now, Wigan will want some money instead of nowt!...Stalteri will be good enough as cover, and besides we was never going to get any money for him anyway, so better to cash in on Pyo instead. Looks like we'll have to settle on a new more solid midfield with any of Baptista and Zokora, Tainio, Huddlestone and relying on the flair of Lennon and Keano, and the physique's of Mido and Berbatov...similar to last year if we can get that fighting spirit going along with better passing. And for god sake lets use our squad, give Routledge, Murphy, Ghaly and Ziegler a chance somewhere...and if theyre not good enough move them on!...COYS!!!

ace. another player to cover a position we already had well covered.

it doesnt matter that we we have no cover at full back because we have 5 forwards and 18 cntral midfielders.

how was the forward position well covered?
look at last season when mido was injured and we had to rely on defoe/keane partnership, which was muscled off the ball at every opportunity.

i know we have barnard as back up, but he is unproven and cant be relied on yet. mido has signed on a permanent transfer unlike last season when he was on loan.
he loves the club, the fans and shows passion - something we have lacked thus far. i hope it rubs off on some of the others. a very good signing in my opinion.

im sure the jolly man will make at least 2 more signings before midnight thursday - i bloody hope so, and im glued to all the websites until then with my spurs alert turned on !!!

Totally agree as per, we talk a big campaign and MUST recruit in order to achieve it.

Barnard is great prospect but Mido, for all his potential and I stress, potential failings; tubby, truculant, AN's etc etc he will be a wonderful addition.

I'm Spurs & I'm in deep. Consequently I'm a romantic at heart and him coming back isn't us running out of ideas but him coming home.

Saviour? Probably not.

Reason to be cheerful?

Hell yeah.

I guess some of us have just about exhausted our reserves of optimism.

After watching us come so close last year, then seemingly undo all our progress (Carrick sale, Rubbish signings) in pre season its taking its toll.

We've all been there. The lifeblood of us Spurs is the belief that a jink here, a dart there, a twist of glory shaped play will see us through... all I can say is, it will mate.

Strange day yesterday. No left winger, Chimbonda confirmed at last moment, Melbranque out for 10 weeks. I hope we can get back to winning and I hope the players we have can improve. If we play the team we had last year less Carrick and replace that position we may get some results and then ease the new boys in as the season progresses.Any suggestions on our best team???
