Martin Jol's Blue N' White Botch Job

What really incensed me was the totally gormless manner in which we were incapable of passing to each other. Virtually every ball was either over hit or cut out by a Bolton foot.
It is depressing that these clowns can't get this fundemental stuff right. Push and run became punt and hope.

Bolton were nothing more than workmanlike, they lack this, they lack that, but crucially, when they struck the ball they found the man they were aiming for. Was I watching doctored footage? Were the Bolton players using a football and were we using a beachball?

Who then to is blame? Ultimately the coach, as we have seen these players play football better than this only weeks ago in an unbeaten pre season campaign.

It was telling that the introduction of Keane, a man who devours his every appearance for this club produced nothing of consequence. Bolton had already extinguished what system of attack we did have by that stage.

Whilst it was only the first game of the season, it was nevertheless a performance so below the standard of our collective expectations as to be huge huge worry.
Champions League football ? This performance echoed Tottenham at their worst. I could have sworn I heard the ghost of Gerry Francis laughing when the final whistle blew.

It was bad I grant you that but come on guys, its the first game of the season. ARSEnal were poor, the scousers were outplayed and Blackburn should capitulate now and decamp to the championship league.

Too early to judge BUT, we need to sort it out now or it will be another season of mid-table crapness!!!

this does seem like a very serious over reaction, my daughter did this the other day but she is 12 so expected, harry are u 12?

anyway there is some truth in what you say, but as we had very close to 70 % of the possession it would appear that we must have passed to our team more then Bolton, never was great at Maths but equally not that bad Harry!

does appear we just could use what possession we had and make any chances from that possession.

Two things appear very clear to me.
1 we have not solved the in balance in the team with the lack of natural width on the left.
2 the solution to this is NOT Davids and sadly he really must be dropped ASAP, he really is borderline crap.

so that's about how I see it.

Anonymous said...

A lot of what you say is true but still an over reaction. They did seem like strangers to each other except Davenport and Dawson, who passed like they were the only two on the pitch.

Anonymous said...

they were poor but it was the first game of the season, really need ledly back as davenport really isnt up to this standard of football. a quality right back is a must as again lee hasnt the quality we need to push on. no point mentioning the left wing as we all know we need someone to fill this spot but as of previous years it doesnt look like we have found anyone. jenas needs to stand up and be counted, looks like he has the tools for the trade but we just dont seem to see them often enough. im not gonna single out each bad performance yesterday as it seemed to me not one of our players performed well, we were below average and we got beaten by an average side. we didnt create anything even though we had the majority of the possession. it all looks a bit worrying as we have just spent the best part of 25 million. one thing i will say, why did jol take of zokora and leave on the ageing davids?? mystery to me.

Anonymous said...

That performance was a fucking disgrace how does that make someone pointing it out 12? If I'd paid to go and see that pile of shit I'd want a refund! You idiots are the same ones that want us to field half our reserves. You are so fucking naive that you can't even accept we were dreadful. Gerry Francis is about right.

Shouldda been 3-0. We were pants.

We'd be quick enough to say Ars*nal dropped 2 points - and ought to be able to let off steam when we drop 3.

1st game of the season but reminded me of many performances last season... absolutely no creativity. living in thailand atm so i get to see every tottenham game and this has been the worst to date. davids is not up to....jenas? hmmm.... blobinson needs to find some form and quick, although he did prevent a 4-0 humiliation. why sub zakora instead of davids? davenport way out of his depth. dawson was clumsy. too many individual poor performances. bolton are a tough team at home i know so they should know too and play accordingly. bolton won every loose ball and worked twice as hard as tottenham. it was frustrating to see the game over after just 13 minutes. bt still 1st game of the saeson and we are only 3 points off 1st. sheff utd at home next and a similar game will be played by them... lets hope the boys are prepared for this... and i hope i don't stay up till 4am just to watch the same shite again. oh and in future maybe berbatov should keep his mouth shut before even kicking a ball in the prem

sorry about punctuation but i couldn't be arsed

dont understand anyone making a comment on davenport, he simply isnt premiership quality, he hasnt the strength to cope, his passing is ok as long as he isnt under pressure and theres someone 10 yards away, get someone else in now, we are really gonna suffer until ledley comes back. you cant go to somewhere like bolton and let them muscle you out of the game. bolton arent a good side but we made them look just above average yesterday.

Anonymous said...

harry agree with you about letting off steam, it was at best very poor and indeed disappointing all round, suppose it does draw out the f word when the unintelligent arrive....

we all hope we can improve at home to Sheffield during the week.

let us see if Jol can start by realising that Davids has become a very strong asset, sadly for the opposition.

70 percent achieved by passing the ball side to side or backwards just because one of their strikers is getting close as they defend from the front counts for nothing. mendes and carrick can confidently turn away from the opposing player and move it forward, both are sadly gone. jenas makes me very nervous when he tries to do that as he is not strong on the ball. what jenas can do is run all day, yet yesterday his movement off the ball into space was non-existent. tanio never stops running and has an eye for a defence splitting pass, murphy we all know can pass the ball thro a defennce well but is less mobile. huddlestone can prob do it very well if he gets a run. what i believe wd have improved yesterday 1) someone other than jenas alongside zokora and 2)giving it to lennon a lot more. sure defenders know him better this year, sure they will double him up and sure he will get fouled. but if he gets fouled going by someone there will more likely be a booking, certainly more likely than when bolton broke the play down just in side their own half with fouls in areas of no threat. remember, ginola had his best games after the full back had been booked in the first half and was now standing off, and he had his fair share of players sent off because they kept fouling him. i wd rather see lennon running at players and losing it to good tackles than endless impersonations of a crab going sideways ending in dawson launching it forward. yes it is only the first game but equally it is exactly the type of game we will look back to with regret in may when we miss out on the 4th spot, or even the 6th spot, by the odd point. altho personally after the expectation of the first game after the pre-season, this one i hoep to remove completely from my memory, so bad were we, just sterile and impotent.

where did the 70% possession stat come from? according to sky we had 43%........

two-thirds of the way thro second half that number came up on the sky screen. i doubt it is true for the whole game, i mentioned it just coz someone seemd to take comfort from it, it cd have benn 90 for all i care, still nop comfort for me if all spend outside final third

Simple explanation without any plastic pseudo nonsense is that our midfield was atrocious, with the exception of Davids ,who put in his best performance since he came to us.I really do rate Jenas but he was not playing yesterday at all.We have to get the ball to Berby and Defoe, they can be clinical in front of goal but they need the ball to do the bizz

Anonymous said...

what i cdnt tell from the tv coverage was what typoe of game defoe had. he was hardly evr in the camera picture as the ball was being passed around the halfway line and i kept wondering whether he was just sauntering around not giving a damn (as he has occasionally in the past) or whether he did keep making runs that no one had the ability to pass to given how far down the field we were playing. anyone who was at the game and has a view shd let us know. i still belive he has more ntaural skill than keane and as keane comes on to play deeper it is easier for him to leave you with the view that he was involved and cared.

Anonymous said...

davids best game? wow he's had some real shit performances then.... he gave away the ball needlessly all first half

Anonymous said...

most of davids passes went sideways or backwards.

Anonymous said...

We were poor and there is not going to be a very big improvement. For years we do not have a balanced midfield. While we have players like Jenas and Davids in our Team, we will achieve nothing.
Most of you will disagree with me but we have very poor management and we will not qualify for Europe next year. 5th last year was the best we did under this management. By Christmas most of you will be cursing Jol.

Anonymous said...

cursing jol, your an idiot, we had one bad game, we will have more bad games this season im sure, but lets not get out of our pram here, sure we need to address the left flank, sure we need a decent rightback and a decent centreback while ledders is injured, but as to your comments on a poor season, the managements not up to it, well basically "*uck you", your no spurs fan so piss off and take your idiotic thoughts with you.

Anonymous said...

Stop looing at Arsenal and concentrate on how crap we were you fucking simpleton! We lacked desire, heart and worst of all, a clue! What is the point of having 70% possesion when all you do is pass it sideways and backwards?! It was like watching fucking egg chasers! Bolton were sitting back and pissing themselves laughing because they would have let us have 99% possesion, they'd beaten us after 13 minutes and they knew it! The sad thing was, so did the Spurs players!!!!!

Anonymous said...

im still not finish, that brainless moron, who the fuck are you talking about, bad management, this is the same management that has turned our team around in the last few year, given us young hungry internationls, given us hope for the future of our club and your slagging them off after one shit game, ok we were poor but you need to go back to your gooner scum website and talk your bollox to someone who wants to listen, wanker

Anonymous said...

No doubt a poor start to the season, but we should still take something from the good preseason we had and not just judge on this performance. That said, it is time to finally realise that Davids just can't cut it on the left. He's far too commited a player to fill that role meaning he either gets overlapped when he concentrates his attention on the player with the ball, or he drifts into the centre of the pitch to make his mark on the action giving the combined effect of leaving too much space out wide and limiting the space for creativity in the centre. My choice, at least until we find some more quality here, would be to play Ziegler again. He knows the role and has some defensive experience on the left so he knows better when to press for the ball and when to cut off the attacking players options. He also has a pretty hefty shot on him from what I remember.

Anonymous said...

I know its tough but it really is the first game and bolton are a good side as much as it pains people to say - look at their home record last year. There were promising signs but Jenas has to be the most overrated player in the world. He's rubbish!!
Season starts now!!!!

Anonymous said...

70% 70% 70%... we had 43% possession!!!!!

Anonymous said...

everyone is popping a Davids, at least he gives 100%

Jenas is the biggest waste of money for years. He is crap. He does nothing. He walks around looking out of breath. he never makes a decent pass unless its 5 yards either side of him, he never creates, penetrates or bosses.

Anonymous said...

Its amazing how 90minutes can change someones point of view Spurs have struggled against opposition of a similiar standard for years and especially against bolton. So don't get your knickers in a twist we'll be up there when it matters

Anonymous said...

i have never rated Jenas. not a rash decision. I just dont see what he contributes ever to a game. And i dont understand why we bought murphy and ghaly if they are never going to be given a chance and jenas will continue to do nothing

Harry Hotspur said...

Had Jenas struck home that free kick at the end we'd all be boasting how fab he is. Problem is, he is a luxury player and not really a grafter. Perhaps against the likes of the Boltons of this world we should have given his shirt to ghaly or murphy.

Murphy had the highest assist rate in the Premiership - before he came to us!

Anonymous said...

jenas out huddlestone in doing the carrick role. keane 2 start give me robbie all day over defoe

Anonymous said...

Huddlestone? Really don't think he's up to it.

Anonymous said...

if jenas had scored i would have said nice free kick, still crap. Thats what carried him in most peoples eyes for most of last season, his free kick against Man Utd. This is a view i had for all of last season, ask anyone who sits near me, and yesterday proved it. Its amazing that he gets in the england squad ahead of say scoot parker for example. Huddlestone definately isnt the answer he is to young.

Harry Hotspur said...

Agree with the Scott Parker call - and Huddlestone is NOT up to scratch, I saw him play against Wigan (h) and he was shocking. Yesterday demonstrated no great improvement.

Anonymous said...

c,mon fellow yids i am gutted aswell but get a grip ffs one defeat and everyone is blowing a gasket,we never win there we just had a day when nothing worked we ave all had them games and if u so u never have then u have never played the game lets get behind them and show were not as fickle as most of the posts would have people believe

Anonymous said...

If Ghaly can not make the team ahead of Jenas he must be awful.Or even Murphy could have been a better bet may be.

Jenas kept running away from Zokora and Zokoras touch was as good as Les Ferdinads, every time he touched the ball he left me thinking that he was going to break the ball.

Ekotto looked like already had given up the ghost in the last 10 minutes,he needs to change the mentality, this is England and the game is played 90 minutes..Lee is amazing last season on the left kept using his right foot and yesterday on the right he kept using his left foot.

Davids doesnt look fit and what we can see Ziegler at least would have had the youth in his side and chased opposition players instead of ghosts that Davids was chasing all evening.

All of a sudden our big squad did not look that big yesterday did it?

Anonymous said...

And so many fans think we oughtta send in the reserves! I say we need to keep shopping. Chimbonda don't look too expensive now, does he?

Anonymous said...

It was certainly atrocious and clearly we looked beaten after 12 minutes. For the first time Jol had the look of a man who knew he couldn't turn it round. Midfield is a major problem. If we were willing to let Davids go for free to Ajax(and he didn't only because of the wages) why he is a permanent fixture in our team? He is well past his peak and taking off Zakora instead of him was a major shock. Zakora had little assistance from Jenas who plays too deep and ghosts around doing little. Davenport suffers against strong physical strikers(but clearly fouled for the goal) just like Gardner and I wonder if Huddlestone should not fill in there on Tuesday as Sheffield Utd have Hulse up front who is very strong. Amazingly Lee was worse on the right, got easily knocked off the ball by Diouf and had zero understanding with Lennon. Worringly without Carrick we had no one to distribute the ball effectively. There is a strong chance we will struggle to beat Sheff by a goal, draw with Everton and lose to ManU and Liverpool giving us 7 points after 6 games and positioning us somewhere around 15th place.

Anonymous said...

we were shit!!! Bolton were a Much much better side than we where!!!! Bolton had only lost 3 home games last season so i expected us to lose especially with the back four we had playing for us!

We will beat Everton as we always do and stuff Sheffield United well and truly on Tuesday night and the whole mood will change.

we had 2 draws at OT in the last 2 seasons and Manurinals wont have the man who is their heartbeat against us.

jol will whip his players back side sooner rather than later.

We needed this and early in the season as a wake up call..

Lets see where we are going to be last day of the season.

Come on my old son, we're allowed to have a moan - it was a diabollical result after we was all gee'd up for the off. It don't mean we don't love MJ anymore - just a hiccup!

Anonymous said...

Sad truth is no creativity at all until Keano came on and tried his best as usual, unfortunately Berbatov could not put away a good ball he threaded through which would have got us back in it. This is the problem that we have failed to address from last year, apart from Keane, we have no one to make that killer pass. Carrick was not the answer for this either btw, as he sat too deep' adding 'Clearly a few things need correcting for the next game. I was also saying all pre-season that the reported near 50k that Davids gets paid is too a high a salary for someone who I thought would only play a bit part from the bench this season and at best thought he would be only good for geeing the lads up in the dressing room and occasionally thrown into the odd scrappy big game when the going gets tough, so a bench place at best. When Ajax came in for him, I thought it would be best if he moved on as his good work was done first half of last season and that would be the end. But then he stays and I see him stay on the whole effing game with Zokora who looked more constructive of the 2 getting replaced to his bemusement, couldn't believe that decision, sorry MJ. Then he continues to make sideways and backward passes (and even struggled with those!)along with Jenas who also looked like a lost debutant. Sadly Lennon was ruffled by Fortune and could not get a decent cross in, as could not Ekotto either, although they tried hard. Lee was totally lost. Defoe was also lost without any service, as he is not one to drop deep and make his own chances. Berby tried hard but was well out numbered and out muscled when it came to getting near goal. Anyway, I also strongly prefer Tainio who is more direct than Davids as well as a hard worker. Would not be a bad idea in trying Huddlestone in place of Jenas to give that lad a kick up the ass also. Therefore would like to see for the next game Zokora, Tainio, Huddlestone and Lennon. Or stick lennon on the bench and try the 3 pronged attack with Keano playing in the hole instead. Wouldn't hurt to give Routledge at least place on the bench either, along with Murphy who must well have the hump by now lol, why did we not sell him if he cant even get a place on the bench?. Keep Jenas on the bench for now too.

Harry Hotspur said...

Excellent post as ever, Vinny.

I can't work out the whole Davids thing either, for a club that is to put it mildly, careful with salaries, given his fussy and frantic sideway/backward passes he does seem to rather indulged at Spurs.

I don't think a fella who was rumoured to stay with us as Ajax weren't so accommodating ought mind playing a smaller role. He's improved from the appalling performances he gave after his injury, but I'm also left feeling a little short-changed by his contributions.

Jenas?

Jenas was drippy.

Anonymous said...

I agree Harry, MJ should not be afraid to bench Jenas, although he should not completely give up on him yet. He is still youngish and could eventually fulfill the potential that his athletic frame could produce. And he also did produce a few key hardworking performances last year with a couple of key goals. He meeds to be as determined as possible to keep up that progression. In the meanwhile though, MJ should not be afraid to bench him as it's not as if anyone else would even want him in that kind of form, might be the kick up the ass he needs and MJ needs to utilise the full squad at his disposal to create more competition. Davids - he needs a bigger kick up the ass, should be dropped from the next squad altogether. But MJ's the boss and obviously sees something we dont, as I would be very dissapointed if he was only picking him based on past reputation/performances or scared of upsetting him?...hope the big man has more b*llocks than that!

Anonymous said...

oh but agree that jenas needs to be benched give murphy a go he's a better set piece taker in my eyes anywy

Another thing, never thought I would say this, but prefer Stalteri at RB when Lennon is at RW as he compensates more defensively and gels more with Lennon than Lee did yesterday!

Anonymous said...

I think Stalteri has been given too much stick. He made a number of foul ups, but his good contributions are largely ignored by the boo boys.

I'd put him behind lennon too.

You lot want a Bolton view on things?
Spurs were poor, very poor but that is because Bolton do not let visiting teams play at The Reebok. We closed down the space and left your midfield playing nice triangles of passes BUT 10 yards in side your own half.
You desperatley missed Carrick - there is nobody in your side to open up play. Your midfield are all happy playing little 5 yard square balls but nowt forward. As for Jenus - how the fuck did he get picked for the World Cup squad!

A lot of you guys are talking about 70% poccession. This has to be a rogue stat as every paper I have read states Bolton had 57% BUT if you want 70% of the ball playing nice 5 yard passes in your half when your 2-0 down, then please have the ball!!

Early doors I know but I was mighty happy with our performance, especially seeing we only have 13 fit pro's at the moment.

By the way, did you lot see the Stat about long balls played? NO? Spurs played 30% more long balls than Bolton on Saturday? Who is the kick and rush team in the Prem?

Anonymous said...

Allardyce showed is a quality manager yet again. I've always rated him highly and wanted him in the England job. I like bolton but look where your lot and our lot finished last season. We should have beaten you but we gave it to you as the telegragh journo stated today. No offense but we're better player for player except those players need to roll their sleeves up and get with the program. Having our captain on the field is a necessity and with Davids & Jenas in the midfield, we'll struggle all season.

Here's to Martin having the guts and nous to giving Huddlestone and Ghaly a chance. Look forward to Tainio being fit again too. One of our most underrated players.

Come on you Spurs!

I could have questioned your shit goalkeeper getting beat from 43 yards, I could have laughed at your £10.9m new forward getting brushed off the ball time-and-time again by our new free transfer signing from Marseille reserves, I could have asked why you played with only 10 men (was JJ on the pitch?) etc etc

but I tried to be constructive, maybe some of the posters on here want it straight:

Name the five teams who have finished in the Premiership top 8 for the last three consecutive seasons? (I will help you all here: Chelski, Urinals, Thieves and Arsenal are 4 of them - the 5th team beat you muppets on Saturday!!)

well, personally as a spurs fan for 30 yeara..i think it was a good result for tottenham.maybe now the players and management will stop believing the hype and b.s about the team and begin to accept that we are no more than an average side at best, and start giving a bit more effort to make up for our shortcomings.we are woefully lacking in REAL quality players, too many of them (and defoe is perfect example) flatter only to decieve.jol, although hailed as tottenhams sa viour, while no doubt a def improvement on previous managers, has made some very strange decisions ,both tactically and personnel wise since his appointment. in my opinion.we need new goalkeeper,2 full backs, and a proven striker, whether berbatov is that im not sure....and of course davids is a liability.....heres hoping for a successful season (fingers crossed)

Far too early to worry, relax we never beat Bolton anyway, no excuse I know and I appreciate the frustration as teams like Bolton SHOULD be dismantled by us. In all honesty the first goal was a blatent foul on Davenport and over the course of the season this will even out, offsides, penalty appeals, the officials rarely get every single decision 100% spot on. Campo's goal was one hell of a strike, Robbo (England's number 1 remember) may have done better but you all must have seen the movement on the ball, it was a freak.
Davids is past is best, sorry to state the obvious buts it's true, jenas does not do enough, benoit will shine, I was living in France last year and saw alot of him and believe me he is class, he can even play LW. Think Murphy should start instead of JJ against Sheffield, he is hungary and will want to keep his place if he starts. Gardner should be 3rd choice CB. Heard Defoe will be out too, wonder if Jol will give Barny a chance? In my opinion we should line up Robbo, Lee, Daws, Gard, Benn, Zokora, Murphy, Hudds, Reto Keane, Berb.

One more thing, Jol is a fantastic man manager and very popular in the game, especially with our players, he and Levy/Commoli have transformed us. Jol motivated us and got us back in Europe where we belong, we will do well in europe, finish 5th no probs, cup run is vital tho in domestic comps.

And many of us read the same posts so a degree of unwitting plagiarizing is highly likely, I've done it myself.

And anyway, I'm sure I saw a similar accusation on another blogsite.

For the people who think we shouldn't "moan", "criticize" or stop being "fickle", come one people!...this is a football blog, we are simply discussing tactics and players. Otherwise what else do you want us to discuss about THFC?...whether the club restaurant should sell prawn sandwiches or whether they should sell pies?...come on, the game is all about opinions and we are simply just all sharing ours and should not be telling fellow supporters not to have an opinion, because that is wrong. It would be also wrong if you would actually go to a players house and and throw a brick through his window or even shout abuse at a player at a match...then that is abuse and is wrong! but just sharing opinions on blogs meant for footballing opinions of the spurs supporting public...come on man its a free world, we are not robots and are all allowed our own opinions...not "abuse", but "opinions", so get over it!
